Success Tutoring vs LearningRx: Tutoring Franchise or Brain Training Franchise? | A Success Tutoring grand opening

LearningRx is a US franchise that sells one-on-one cognitive skills training, often described as brain training, rather than subject tutoring. Success Tutoring is a K-12 tutoring franchise in English and Mathematics that runs membership-based learning centres, founded in Sydney and now launching across Texas and other international markets. Prospective owners in the United States often find both brands in the same education franchise directories, and both pitch themselves to parents of struggling or ambitious students. The products, the economics and the regulatory history are quite different, so this guide walks through each area in turn to help you decide which tutoring franchise or training model fits your plans.

At a glance

  • Founded: LearningRx was founded in Colorado Springs in 2002 by Dr. Ken Gibson and has franchised since around 2003, according to 1851 Franchise and Entrepreneur's franchise directory. Success Tutoring was founded in Sydney in 2017 by Michael Black and has franchised since around 2020.
  • Product: LearningRx delivers one-on-one cognitive training programmes targeting skills such as processing speed, attention, memory and reasoning. Success Tutoring delivers curriculum-aligned tutoring in English and Maths from kindergarten to Year 12.
  • Format: LearningRx pairs a client with a trainer for an intensive programme of defined length. Success Tutoring enrols families as ongoing members of a learning centre.
  • Footprint: LearningRx had more than 80 centres in 25 states in 2016, according to a Federal Trade Commission complaint and the Colorado Springs Gazette; franchise directories such as Franzy list approximately 46 to 47 units today. Success Tutoring has reported 35 Australian centres (2023) and territories in more than 100 locations, with announced launches in New Zealand, the US, Singapore, Canada, the UK and India.

How each tutoring franchise model works

LearningRx is a cognitive training franchise. A client, usually a child but the programmes have also been marketed to adults, is assessed and then works one-on-one with a trainer on exercises intended to strengthen underlying mental skills. The FTC's 2016 complaint lists at least five programmes: ThinkRx (the core cognitive programme), ReadRx (accelerated reading), ComprehendRx, MathRx and Liftoff, a pre-school readiness programme. The sale is typically a programme package rather than a weekly subscription, and the centre's revenue depends on a steady flow of new assessments.

It is relevant due diligence that in May 2016 the FTC announced a settlement with LearningRx and its CEO over claims the agency said were unsubstantiated, including that the programmes could treat conditions such as ADHD and autism. The company agreed to stop making those claims and to pay USD 200,000, according to the FTC's press release, and said at the time that its claims were supported by research. The brand continues to franchise, and anyone evaluating it should read the current disclosure document and ask how marketing claims are managed today.

Success Tutoring is a curriculum-support franchise. Students receive tutoring in English and Maths tied to what they are studying at school, delivered in a retail-style learning centre by tutors recruited and trained through the franchise system. Families join as members, so revenue recurs monthly rather than arriving in programme-sized lumps, and the centre's job is to grow and retain a member base across the whole K-12 span.

What students get

LearningRx clients get intensive, individual attention focused on how they learn rather than what they are learning. For a family that has tried subject tutoring without progress and suspects an underlying processing or attention issue, a structured cognitive programme is an appealing proposition, and the one-on-one format is a genuine strength.

Success Tutoring students get face-to-face support in the two subjects that drive most school outcomes, English and Maths, with an assessment, a personalised plan and continuous adjustment as they progress. Because the model is curriculum-aligned, parents can see the connection between the tutoring and the school report. Because it is membership-based, a child can be supported from early reading through to final-year exams by a centre and team they know. Our learning resources page describes the curriculum approach.

The two products can be complementary. A student who completes a cognitive programme still needs to learn fractions and essay structure; a tutoring centre is where that happens.

What franchise partners get

LearningRx franchise partners receive training in the assessment and programme delivery system, materials, brand and territory, with trainers delivering the programmes to clients. It has more than two decades of franchising history and a network of long-standing owners, which is worth credit.

Success Tutoring's partner package is designed around a bricks-and-mortar centre that opens full and stays full:

  • Launch and pre-marketing support: centres have opened with 45, 55, 60 and 70 or more members signed before opening, according to Success Tutoring news posts.
  • Leasing and fit-out support for a retail-style site.
  • Tutor recruitment and tutor training through an online franchise training platform.
  • Ongoing marketing support, a national and global brand, and a flat franchising model where partners deal directly with head office leadership.
  • A turnkey system, the Success Kit, with K-12 curriculum and learning resources.

Success Tutoring does not require franchise partners to be teachers; confirm LearningRx's owner requirements with the franchisor. Success Tutoring partners come from corporate, engineering, finance and small-business backgrounds; see franchise stories.

Investment and fees

LearningRx's published cost figures vary by source and year, which is itself a reason to read the disclosure document carefully:

  • Entrepreneur's franchise directory lists an initial franchise fee of approximately USD 30,000 to 45,000.
  • FranchisePayback reports a total initial investment of approximately USD 75,000 to 220,000.
  • Pulse, summarising what it describes as the 2026 FDD, reports a total initial investment of roughly USD 130,000 to 300,000 and a franchise fee of around USD 25,000 to 35,000.
  • FranchiseOverview lists an ongoing royalty of 8% of gross revenue plus a 3% marketing fee.

Success Tutoring does not publish fees, royalties or set-up costs in articles. The full breakdown is on our investment schedule, and our approach to modelling centre revenue is explained on potential earnings. When comparing, remember that a programme-sale model and a membership model produce very different cash-flow curves even at similar total investment.

Markets and footprint

LearningRx is a US brand. Its network peaked at more than 80 centres in 25 states around 2016, according to the FTC complaint and local press, and current franchise directories list approximately 46 to 47 units. It has no significant presence outside the United States that we could verify.

Success Tutoring grows territory by territory across several countries. Reported Australian milestones include 35 centres in 2023 with a launch schedule for 80 more (Franchise Executives) and territories sold in more than 100 locations (Inside Small Business). In the US, the brand launched in Texas with an ambition of 80 units across the state in five years (Franchise Executives). It has also announced New Zealand (25 sites over four years), a 2026 Canadian launch with a goal of 120 units by 2029, and entries into Singapore, the UK and India. Current territories are listed on available locations.

For a Texas prospect, then, the choice is between an established US cognitive-training brand with a smaller current network and a fast-growing international K-12 tutoring franchise entering the state with open territories.

Who each option suits

LearningRx may suit you if:

  • You believe in cognitive training as a category and want to sell intensive, high-touch programmes rather than ongoing tutoring.
  • You are comfortable with a sales cycle built on assessments and programme packages.
  • You have reviewed the brand's regulatory history and current marketing standards and are satisfied with them.

Success Tutoring may suit you if:

  • You want a two-subject, K-12 business whose value is easy for parents to understand and connect to school results.
  • You prefer recurring membership revenue and a visible, retail-style centre in your community.
  • You want launch pre-marketing so the centre opens with members already signed, and a direct line to head office leadership.
  • You are entering Texas or another launch market and want early choice of territory.
