Studienkreis Franchise vs Success Tutoring: Which Tutoring Franchise Fits You?
Studienkreis is one of Germany's best-known tutoring brands. Success Tutoring runs membership-based K–12 learning centres. We compare the two tutoring franchise models for prospective owners.

If you are researching a Studienkreis franchise, you are looking at one of the oldest and most widely recognised names in German Nachhilfe (private tutoring). This comparison is written for prospective franchise owners, not parents: people deciding which tutoring franchise to buy and what running it would actually involve. We set Studienkreis next to Success Tutoring, a tutoring franchise founded in Sydney in 2017 that runs membership-based learning centres.
In one line: Studienkreis is a long-established German network of local tutoring schools built around small subject groups, while Success Tutoring is a younger, international brand built around retail-style centres, a K–12 English and Maths programme and a membership model. Every fact about Studienkreis below is attributed to the company's own publications, franchise directories or the press, so you can check it.
The Studienkreis franchise at a glance
- History. According to the chronicle Studienkreis published for its 50th anniversary in 2024, Jürgen Hüholdt founded the business in 1974, teaching his first pupils in small groups in Witten and Herne. The company is based in Bochum (Börsen-Zeitung, December 2022).
- Franchising. The same chronicle records that a partner system was set up in 1984. Franchise directories list Studienkreis as a member of the Deutscher Franchiseverband (DFV), the German Franchise Association.
- Ownership. The chronicle states that the Cornelsen publishing group took a majority stake in 2003; private equity owners followed. In December 2022 the Austrian online tutoring company GoStudent announced it was acquiring Studienkreis from IK Partners (tech.eu, Börsen-Zeitung, IK Partners' portfolio page).
- Method. Lessons are given in small groups or one to one. Local Studienkreis price sheets (for example Ahaus, dated November 2025) cap groups at five pupils up to Year 10 and three from upper secondary level, with groups formed within the same subject outside primary school. Studienkreis also offers online tutoring, and its press releases say it has its service quality checked by TÜV Rheinland.
- Footprint. Studienkreis job advertisements refer to around 1,000 locations across Germany, and coverage of the GoStudent deal cited more than 1,000 learning centres; some franchise directories give about 900. Counts differ by date and definition.
- Owner requirements. Franchise directory listings say a teaching qualification is not required and career changers are welcome; franchise partners run their school independently, build their customer base and coordinate tutors. Some directories note that existing locations can be taken over in certain regions.
The Success Tutoring franchise at a glance
- History. Success Tutoring was founded in Sydney in 2017 by Michael Black, who started the business at 17 from a spare bedroom in his parents' home in Western Sydney (Forbes Australia, Inside Small Business). It has franchised since around 2020.
- Method. Students from kindergarten to Year 12 learn in physical, retail-style centres, with a core focus on English and Mathematics. Families join as members rather than booking casual lessons.
- Footprint. Reported milestones include 35 Australian centres with a launch schedule for 80 more (Franchise Executives, 2023) and territories sold in more than 100 Australian locations (Inside Small Business). Announced international markets are New Zealand, the United States, Singapore, Canada, the United Kingdom and India.
- Germany. As of October 2026 Success Tutoring has not announced a German launch and has no centres in Germany. We are looking for franchise partners and a master franchise partner there.
- Owner profile. Franchise partners do not need to be teachers; many come from corporate, engineering, finance and small-business backgrounds.

Running the business day to day
A Studienkreis franchise partner runs a neighbourhood tutoring school. The core daily work is matching demand to supply: advising parents, placing pupils in the right subject group, building a timetable and keeping a pool of tutors available across many subjects and levels. Because groups are formed by subject and capped at a small size, timetabling is a real skill. Seasonal peaks around half-year reports (Halbjahreszeugnisse), year-end reports and the Abitur shape the calendar. Studienkreis also offers both fixed-term contracts and hourly booked lessons, according to the company, so the owner manages a mix of customer agreements.
A Success Tutoring franchise partner runs a single, visible centre with a narrower subject focus. Families join as members, so the owner's attention goes to retention, progress conversations with parents and keeping the centre full and lively. Head office supplies the K–12 English and Maths curriculum and the learning resources, recruits and trains tutors through its online platform and supports marketing. Before opening, centres run a pre-marketing campaign; Success Tutoring centres have reported opening with 45, 55, 60 and 70+ members on day one. See our launch support page for how that works.
Both are people businesses. The difference is breadth versus focus: Studienkreis covers almost any subject a pupil needs help with, while Success Tutoring concentrates on two core subjects delivered through one structured programme.
Costs and fees: how to compare a tutoring franchise in Germany
Germany has no specific franchise law. Instead, courts have developed a pre-contractual duty of disclosure that requires a franchisor to give you accurate information before you sign. Use that duty: ask every franchisor for the following in writing.
- The entry fee, what it covers and whether VAT applies.
- The total investment, including premises, fit-out, equipment, launch marketing and working capital.
- All ongoing fees: royalties, fixed monthly fees, advertising or marketing contributions and software fees.
- Contract term, renewal terms and what happens if you want to sell.
- Territory protection and how close another location may open.
- Contact details for current and former franchise partners.
Studienkreis. Published figures vary between sources and are not always dated. The fuer-gruender.de franchise exchange lists an entry fee from €14,500, a total investment from €30,000 and equity from €5,000, with an ongoing fee from €350 a month and an advertising fee from €70 a month. L'Express Franchise reports ongoing fees of 6 to 8 per cent of revenue plus a monthly base fee of €420, and a mandatory marketing package. Treat these as indications only and confirm current terms directly with Studienkreis.
Success Tutoring. We do not publish fees or set-up costs in articles; the current structure is on our investment schedule, and every candidate receives full written disclosure before signing. Compare the total cost of getting to a full centre, not just the entry fee, and have a German franchise lawyer and tax adviser review any contract.
Which suits which owner?
A Studienkreis franchise may suit you if you want to join one of Germany's most established tutoring brands, you like the idea of serving a wide range of subjects and year levels, you enjoy coordinating a pool of tutors and complex timetables, or you would prefer to take over an existing location with customers already in place.
Success Tutoring may suit you if you want to own a visible, retail-style centre built around a membership community, you prefer a focused K–12 English and Maths programme supplied by head office, you come from a business rather than a teaching background, or you have the ambition to help bring a new international brand to Germany, possibly as a master franchise partner.
Both brands welcome owners without a teaching background, and both depend on the owner's leadership. The right choice comes down to the kind of business you want to run every day.
