From PSLE to BGCSE: tutoring demand in Botswana
Learners in Botswana pass three national examination points on the way through school, all administered by the Botswana Examinations Council (BEC): the Primary School Leaving Examination at Standard 7, the Junior Certificate Examination at Form 3, and the Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) at the end of Form 5. BGCSE grades are what universities, colleges and government sponsorship look at, so the senior secondary years carry real weight for families.
English becomes the main medium of instruction after the first years of primary school and is a compulsory BGCSE subject, while Mathematics underpins science and commerce routes. Parents in Gaborone, Francistown and the fast-growing villages around the capital increasingly pay for extra classes, but much of that help is informal and booked with individual teachers as exams approach.

Kumon centres use a worksheet-based self-learning method in which children practise independently and move up through levels. Success Tutoring is membership-based and tutor-led, covering K-12 English and Maths in modern, retail-style centres.
