Yangon is Myanmar's largest city and its commercial hub, and education has long been one of the things its families prioritise most. Parents in Yangon have historically spent heavily on private tuition and on English, seeing both as the best way to widen their children's options. For investors with local knowledge, a tutoring franchise in Yangon is a long-term proposition worth understanding carefully.
Success Tutoring does not operate in Myanmar. We welcome conversations with prospective franchise partners in Yangon, and with experienced operators interested in master franchise rights for the country. Territories are drawn with partners, and any decision to proceed would depend on local conditions and legal advice.
Myanmar's school system
Public schooling is overseen by the Ministry of Education. Since 2016 the country has been moving from a ten-year basic education system to a KG+12 structure, with a kindergarten year followed by primary, middle and high school. The key milestone has traditionally been the matriculation examination at the end of high school, whose results determine which university and which subject a student can study. Medicine and engineering have historically required the highest scores, and preparation starts early.
Yangon also has a large private sector. Private schools, many teaching an English-medium or international curriculum, have expanded significantly over the past decade, and international schools prepare students for Cambridge IGCSE and A-levels, the IB Diploma, or American-style diplomas for university study abroad.
Schooling in Myanmar has been disrupted since 2020, first by COVID-19 school closures and then by the instability that followed. Many families have changed how their children study, with large numbers moving to private schools, learning centres and online programmes.
Why Yangon families have invested in tutoring
Private tuition was a large part of Yangon school life well before recent disruptions. Common reasons include:
- Matriculation preparation, especially in maths and science subjects.
- English, which parents see as essential for international qualifications, work and study abroad.
- Gaps in learning caused by school closures, which many families want to close.
- International school preparation, including entry assessments and IGCSE support.
- Study-abroad plans, with students looking to universities in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Japan and elsewhere.
A structured centre with trained tutors, a clear curriculum and regular progress reporting would offer families consistency at a time when many other things are uncertain.
Areas families have favoured in Yangon
Yangon's established family neighbourhoods are spread around Inya and Kandawgyi lakes and to the north and east of downtown. Areas that have traditionally had strong demand for education services include:
- Bahan and Kamayut, central townships with many schools and higher-income families.
- Mayangone and Hlaing, northern townships around Inya Lake.
- Yankin and Tamwe, established residential areas east of the centre.
- Sanchaung and Ahlone, busy townships with many tuition providers.
- Thingangyun and South Okkalapa, populous townships with a large school-age population.
- Thanlyin, across the river, home to newer housing and industrial development.
If territories are drawn in Yangon, they would be mapped with the partner using population, schools and existing providers, and each would have one holder.
What Success Tutoring provides partners
Success Tutoring was founded in Sydney in 2017 and franchises centres across Australia. Should a Yangon partnership go ahead, support for the partner could include the operating system and Success Kit, help with premises and fit-out, recruitment and online training for tutors, learning resources and a structured program, and launch marketing support, along with ongoing support from head office. Any such support would be defined in the franchise agreement and disclosure documents.
You do not need a teaching background. Strong local knowledge, a realistic view of the operating environment and business experience matter most.
Frequently asked questions
Is Success Tutoring actively opening centres in Myanmar?
Not yet. We are open to conversations with experienced local operators, but any agreement would depend on conditions on the ground, the regulatory environment and advice from both sides' lawyers.
What legal issues should a Myanmar partner consider?
Myanmar has no franchise-specific disclosure law; agreements are governed by contract, company and intellectual property law. Partners and franchisors also need to consider foreign exchange controls and international sanctions rules. Seek independent legal advice before signing anything.
Would the programme suit students in Myanmar-medium schools?
English tutoring could draw on Success Tutoring's materials. Maths would be planned with the partner for students in local and international schools.
