Windhoek is Namibia's capital, its largest city and the place where most of the country's professional families live and work. It is also where the effects of the recent senior secondary reform are felt most keenly by parents who want their children in university. For anyone considering a tutoring franchise in Windhoek, that is the opening: a small but ambitious market where structured, year-round help with English and Mathematics is still hard to find.
Success Tutoring has no centre in Namibia. It is seeking franchise partners for Windhoek, and a master franchise partner for the country, and territories would be drawn with those partners.
A reform that moved the finish line
The Ministry of Education, through its Directorate of National Examinations and Assessment, runs Namibia's school-leaving exams. Under the reformed structure:
- Learners write the Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate Ordinary level (NSSCO) at the end of Grade 11.
- Those who meet the entry requirements continue to the Advanced Subsidiary level (NSSCAS) in Grade 12, the route most universities consider. New Era has reported that learners needed at least three C grades at Ordinary level to progress.
- The first NSSCAS examinations were planned for the end of 2021.
The practical effect is that the most important exam now comes a year earlier than many parents expect. A learner who struggles with English or Mathematics in Grades 8 to 10 has little time to recover before NSSCO, and a weak Ordinary level result can close the door to AS level for that year.
English is the official language and the medium of instruction beyond the early grades, yet for many Windhoek learners it is not the home language. Afrikaans, Oshiwambo, Otjiherero, German and other languages are spoken at home across the city, so reading and writing in English affect results in every subject.
Windhoek's schools and families
The capital has the country's widest mix of schools: large government secondary schools, long-established private and church schools, and a small number of international schools offering IB or Cambridge programmes to diplomatic, NGO and corporate families. The University of Namibia and the Namibia University of Science and Technology are both based in Windhoek, and their entry requirements are the target many families are working towards.
Republikein reported that nearly 80 per cent of NSSCO and NSSCAS candidates in 2023 did not meet tertiary admission requirements. Figures like that are discussed at dinner tables across Windhoek, and they are why parents increasingly look for help well before the final school years.
Where demand is concentrated
No Success Tutoring territories have been drawn in Windhoek yet. Areas a partner might discuss with head office include:
- Klein Windhoek, Ludwigsdorf and Avis, established eastern suburbs with many professional households.
- Eros, Olympia and Pionierspark, family neighbourhoods close to schools and shopping centres.
- Academia, Hochland Park and Auasblick, mid-sized family suburbs to the south and west.
- Khomasdal and Katutura, large and growing communities where a central, affordable option for extra classes would reach many learners.
- Elisenheim, Brakwater and the northern estates, newer developments drawing young families out of the city centre.
What partners receive
Success Tutoring opened its first centre in Western Sydney in 2017. Its centres sit in visible, shop-style premises, and families pay a membership for regular weekly lessons in English and Mathematics. Support for a Windhoek partner may include:
- The business system and Success Kit used across the network.
- Guidance on choosing premises, the lease and the fit-out.
- Recruitment and online training for tutors, a useful support in a city where the University of Namibia and NUST produce graduates every year.
- Learning resources and a structured program.
- Help with launch and local marketing around opening.
- Ongoing support from head office.
The franchise agreement and disclosure documents are where the support package is formally described.
Owners manage; tutors teach. A master franchise partner would plan the wider country, from Windhoek to Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and the northern towns.
Frequently asked questions
Is Windhoek big enough for a tutoring franchise?
Windhoek is a small city by global standards, but it holds a large share of Namibia's fee-paying families and its universities. Territories are drawn around catchments of households, so a partner's area would reflect the real size of the local market.
How would the programme fit the NSSCO and NSSCAS syllabuses?
Tutors work on the core skills that exams draw on, and a Namibian partner would work with head office on how sessions relate with the Grade 8 to 12 syllabuses and the NSSCO timeline.
What rules apply to franchising in Namibia?
Namibia has no franchise-specific law, so agreements rely on general contract, intellectual property and competition law. Companies and trade marks are registered with BIPA. Seek independent legal advice from a Namibian lawyer before signing anything.
Can I start with one centre and grow?
Yes. Many partners begin with one centre. Anyone interested in building the brand across Namibia can also discuss the master franchise role.
