Kenyan education is in the middle of its biggest change in a generation. The Competency-Based Curriculum, introduced from 2017 to replace the 8-4-4 system, is now referred to as Competency-Based Education (CBE) following the recommendations of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reform. Learners move through pre-primary, primary, junior school and senior school, with assessments managed by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), while the remaining 8-4-4 cohorts continue to sit the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
That transition has left many parents unsure how best to help. Competency-based learning expects reading, projects and problem solving at home, and the move into senior school pathways makes solid literacy and numeracy more important, not less. English becomes the main language of instruction as learners progress, and Mathematics is central to the STEM pathway.
Success Tutoring has not announced a launch in Kenya. We are looking for franchise partners and master franchise partners in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and other growing towns who want to run a membership-based K-12 English and Maths centre after school hours. Kenya has long restricted holiday tuition organised through schools, and Ministry of Education directives on the issue commonly cite the Basic Education Act 2013. How those rules apply to an independent after-school centre is a question for a Kenyan advocate before you commit. Our model is built around regular term-time sessions for members, not holiday camps.
