Mombasa runs on the port, trade and tourism, and its families have a different set of options from Nairobi's. There are fewer large private school groups and fewer structured tutoring providers, yet parents face the same pressures from Kenya's curriculum change and national assessments. That gap is what makes a tutoring franchise in Mombasa worth a close look.
Success Tutoring does not operate in Kenya yet. We are seeking franchise partners in Mombasa and a master franchise partner for Kenya. Territories are drawn with partners, around the neighbourhoods on and off the island.
Schooling at the coast
Mombasa follows the national system set by Kenya's Ministry of Education. Under the Competency-Based Curriculum, children move through pre-primary, primary (ending with the KPSEA in Grade 6), junior school (Grades 7 to 9, ending with a national assessment) and senior school (Grades 10 to 12), where they follow pathways. Assessments are run by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC). Students still finishing under the old 8-4-4 system sit the KCSE, which determines university placement.
The coast has its own character. Mombasa has a large Muslim community, and many children attend madrasa alongside school, which shapes the after-school timetable. Kiswahili is widely spoken at home, and English, the main language of instruction from upper primary, is a common area where students need support. The county also has a mix of public schools, low-cost private schools, faith-based schools and a smaller number of private schools teaching the British curriculum.
What drives demand for tutoring in Mombasa
Parents at the coast share the national concerns about the CBC: they want to know their children are building strong reading, writing and maths skills, and many find continuous assessment harder to interpret than the old exams. On top of that:
- Fewer quality options. Much of the tutoring available is informal, with individual teachers running classes from home or school.
- English proficiency. Students who speak Kiswahili or another language at home often need extra help with academic English.
- Senior school placement. Families want their children to reach strong senior schools and pathways, including national schools outside the county.
- Working families in logistics, shipping, government and hospitality who want a reliable after-school routine.
Neighbourhoods with potential
Greater Mombasa stretches from the island to the north and south mainland. Areas with potential for a centre include:
- Nyali, the main upmarket residential and shopping area on the north mainland.
- Bamburi, Shanzu and Mtwapa, growing areas further north with new housing.
- Kizingo and Tudor, established residential areas on the island.
- Mombasa Island's town centre, where many parents work and commute through.
- Changamwe and Miritini, on the west mainland near the port and the standard gauge railway terminus.
- Likoni and the south coast, linked to the island by ferry and growing steadily.
Mombasa territories would be set with the partner around island and mainland catchments, based on residents, schools and existing tuition, and each would belong to one partner.
What partners receive
Success Tutoring was founded in Western Sydney in 2017 and franchises centres across Australia. At the coast, the brand would be new, so the first partner would effectively introduce it: building relationships with schools in Nyali and Bamburi, and earning a reputation with parents through visible progress.
Support may include the Success Kit and operating system, help finding and fitting out premises with good access and parking, tutor recruitment and online training, learning resources, and help planning coastal marketing before and after launch, plus ongoing support from head office. The exact terms are found in the franchise agreement and disclosure documents.
Partners do not need to be teachers. Business sense and strong local connections count for more.
Frequently asked questions
How would a Mombasa centre fit around madrasa and school timetables?
Partners set session times around the schools and community in their territory, including madrasa and prayer times. That local planning is part of setting up the centre.
Is Mombasa a good place for a first Kenyan centre outside Nairobi?
Mombasa is Kenya's second-largest city and has fewer structured tutoring providers than Nairobi. That leaves room for a centre with a clear programme and trained tutors to build a local reputation over time.
What laws apply to franchising in Kenya?
Kenya has no franchise-specific disclosure law. Franchise agreements are governed by contract, company, competition and intellectual property law. Seek independent legal advice in Kenya before signing.
