Durban is South Africa's busiest port city and the economic centre of KwaZulu-Natal, one of the country's two largest provincial school systems. The eThekwini metro had more than four million residents in the 2022 census, according to Statistics South Africa. For anyone considering a tutoring franchise in Durban, the city combines a large population of school-age children, strong demand for Mathematics support and rapid growth in the north and in the upper highway area.

Success Tutoring does not yet have a centre in Durban. It is seeking franchise partners here, and a master franchise partner for South Africa, with territories drawn alongside partners.

Education in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal

Public schools in Durban are run by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education and follow the national CAPS curriculum from Grade R to Grade 12. KwaZulu-Natal has one of the largest matric cohorts in the country each year, so provincial results are closely watched.

Schools are classified into quintiles: quintiles 1 to 3 are no-fee schools, while quintile 4 and 5 schools charge fees, including many well-known former Model C schools in Durban North, Westville and the Berea. Durban also has a long tradition of independent schools, many of which write the IEB matric, while public school learners write the DBE's National Senior Certificate.

isiZulu is the most common home language in the province, and Durban also has large English-speaking and Indian South African communities. For many learners, English is a First Additional Language but the language of instruction and examination.

Why Durban families look for extra lessons

Mathematics as the gatekeeper. Learners choose between Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy in Grade 10. Degrees at UKZN, the Durban University of Technology and elsewhere in engineering, health sciences and commerce require Mathematics, so families invest early to keep learners on that path.

English for every subject. Learners studying in their second language need strong reading and writing skills to do well across the curriculum.

A culture of extra lessons. Many Durban families, particularly in communities with strong education traditions, already pay for after-school classes and holiday programmes. Much of that is with individual tutors, with little structure or reporting.

New families on the north coast. Development around Umhlanga and further north is bringing young professional families to the area, and new schools are opening to serve them.

Growth areas in eThekwini

Territories in South Africa have not been drawn yet. A partner would plan them with head office, and areas with potential include:

  • Umhlanga, Umhlanga Ridge and La Lucia, high-income coastal suburbs with strong school demand.
  • Cornubia, Sibaya and the north coast corridor, newer developments drawing young families.
  • Durban North and Glenashley, established family suburbs.
  • Westville, known for its schools and family homes.
  • Hillcrest, Kloof and Gillitts, the upper highway area, popular with families seeking space and good schools.
  • Chatsworth, Phoenix and Pinetown, large communities with many school-age children.
  • Umlazi and KwaMashu, big townships where accessible, quality support could reach many learners.

The N2 and N3 shape how families move across the metro, so territories follow real travel catchments.

Running a Success Tutoring centre in Durban

Durban partners would run the model Success Tutoring has developed in Australia since 2017. Support may include:

  • Owner training and the Success Kit.
  • Help with finding premises in a busy shopping node, leasing and fit-out.
  • Recruiting tutors, with online training for each one.
  • Learning resources and a structured program.
  • Launch and marketing support for opening a new centre.
  • Ongoing support from head office once the centre is trading.

For Durban, as elsewhere in South Africa, the disclosure document and franchise agreement describe the support provided.

You manage the business and the team. The tutors deliver the lessons.

Frequently asked questions

What makes Durban different from Johannesburg or Cape Town?

Durban has a large population of learners, a strong tradition of paying for extra lessons in many communities, and fast growth on the north coast and in the upper highway area.

What does South African law require of a franchisor?

Under the Consumer Protection Act, a franchisor must provide a disclosure document at least 14 days before signing, and franchisees have a 10-business-day cooling-off period after signing. Seek independent legal advice from an attorney with franchise experience.

Could the programme help learners in isiZulu-speaking homes?

It may. Sessions work from each learner's level, which is intended to help learners who study in English as a First Additional Language. A partner would plan tutor recruitment to suit the community.
