Johannesburg is South Africa's economic engine and the centre of Gauteng, the country's most populous province. The City of Johannesburg alone had close to five million residents in the 2022 census, according to Statistics South Africa, and the wider metro runs from Roodepoort in the west to Benoni and Boksburg in the east. For anyone considering a tutoring franchise in Johannesburg, the scale is matched by intense focus on matric results and a long-standing culture of paying for extra lessons.
Success Tutoring has no centre in South Africa yet. It is seeking franchise partners for Johannesburg, and a master franchise partner for the country, with territories drawn together with partners.
Schools, CAPS and the matric year
All public schools follow the national Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) from Grade R to Grade 12, set by the Department of Basic Education (DBE). In Johannesburg the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) runs public schools and the province's online admissions system for Grade 1 and Grade 8, which every January reminds parents how competitive places at popular schools can be.
Public schools are ranked into quintiles by the poverty level of their community. Quintile 1 to 3 schools are no-fee schools, while quintile 4 and 5 schools charge fees, and many former Model C schools in the northern suburbs fall into the fee-paying group, with governing bodies that set high expectations.
Grade 12 ends with the National Senior Certificate, known as matric. Public school learners write the DBE papers, while many of Johannesburg's independent schools write the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) version. The type of pass matters as much as passing: a Bachelor pass is needed to apply for a degree at Wits, the University of Johannesburg or elsewhere.
Why Johannesburg parents pay for extra lessons
The Maths decision. In Grade 10, learners choose Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy. Engineering, commerce, science and health sciences degrees require Mathematics, so parents who want to keep doors open look for help well before Grade 9 ends. Reports on the 2025 DBE results showed the Mathematics pass rate falling to about 64 per cent.
English as the language of learning. Johannesburg is linguistically diverse, with isiZulu, Sesotho, Setswana, Afrikaans and many other home languages. For many learners, English is a First Additional Language yet the language of every exam paper.
Fee-paying families with high expectations. Parents paying former Model C or independent school fees expect results and already spend on extra lessons, holiday programmes and Saturday classes.
Busy, long-commute households. Dual-income families in the northern suburbs and on the East Rand want a safe, structured place for children after school, close to home.
Where the growth is in Johannesburg
No Success Tutoring territories have been drawn in South Africa. Partners plan them with head office around catchments of families. Areas with strong potential include:
- Fourways, Lonehill and Dainfern, plus estates around Steyn City, where families keep moving north.
- Midrand and Waterfall, a fast-growing corridor between Johannesburg and Pretoria with new estates and schools.
- Sandton, Bryanston and Rivonia, high-income suburbs with many independent and former Model C schools.
- Randburg, Northcliff and Roodepoort, established family suburbs in the north-west.
- Soweto, a large community with growing middle-class areas and strong demand for affordable, quality support.
- The East Rand, including Benoni, Boksburg and Edenvale, and Alberton to the south.
Johannesburg's size and traffic mean families want a centre close to home or school, so territories are drawn around real travel catchments.
Running a Success Tutoring centre in Jozi
Success Tutoring is a membership business: families sign up for regular weekly lessons rather than buying a block of extra lessons before exams. Support for a Johannesburg partner may include the Success Kit, help securing and fitting out premises in a convenience centre or mall, tutor recruitment and online training, learning resources and a structured program, and launch marketing support. In Gauteng, the CPA disclosure document and the franchise agreement together describe that support.
The brand was founded in Sydney in 2017. Partners come from corporate, engineering, finance and small-business careers, and they have ongoing support from the Success Tutoring team.
Frequently asked questions
How is franchising regulated in South Africa?
Franchising is covered by the Consumer Protection Act. The franchisor must give you a disclosure document at least 14 days before you sign, and you have a cooling-off period of 10 business days after signing. The Franchise Association of South Africa (FASA) is the industry body. Seek independent legal advice from an attorney with franchise experience.
Would the programme align with CAPS and the IEB?
Sessions work from each learner's level, and a South African partner would work with head office on how they relate to CAPS outcomes and DBE and IEB matric expectations.
Can a centre help learners stay in Mathematics rather than Maths Literacy?
That is one of the strongest reasons parents seek help. Regular sessions in the Senior Phase (Grades 7 to 9) are intended to support learners as they prepare for the choice of Mathematics in Grades 10 to 12, though no result can be promised.
Is a master franchise available for South Africa?
Yes. Success Tutoring would like to hear from candidates who could plan territories and recruit partners across South Africa.
