Jerusalem is a city of many communities, and its schools reflect that. Secular, religious, Haredi and Arabic-speaking families each have their own school networks, priorities and calendars. A tutoring franchise in Jerusalem needs to understand which communities a centre will serve and what they want from English and Maths support. Done well, that knowledge is an advantage.

Success Tutoring does not yet have a centre in Israel. We are seeking franchise partners in Jerusalem, and a master franchise partner for the country. Territories are drawn with partners around the neighbourhoods they know.

Schools and streams in Jerusalem

Israel's Ministry of Education oversees the school system, which runs in several streams: state schools, state-religious schools, independent Haredi schools and Arabic-language schools. Jerusalem has large numbers of students in every one of them, more evenly spread than in most Israeli cities.

The common milestone for students in state and state-religious schools is the bagrut, the matriculation certificate, with maths and English studied at 3, 4 or 5 units. Higher levels earn bonus points for university admission, and the Psychometric Entrance Test adds a further hurdle with quantitative and English sections. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, one of the country's leading universities, is on the city's doorstep, and many local students aim for it.

Other groups follow different paths. Many Haredi boys' schools place less emphasis on secular subjects in the upper years, although some families seek maths and English skills for further study or work. In Arabic-language schools in the city, some students sit the Israeli bagrut and others the Palestinian Tawjihi matriculation, and English and maths are central to both.

Why Jerusalem families seek extra help

Demand for tuition in Jerusalem comes from several directions:

  • Bagrut and psychometric preparation, particularly for 5-unit maths and English.
  • English-speaking families. Jerusalem has a large community of immigrants from the US, UK, Canada, South Africa and Australia, whose children often need support with maths in Hebrew while keeping their English strong.
  • Families from other language backgrounds, including French- and Russian-speaking communities.
  • Adults and young adults returning to study, including some from religious backgrounds who did not take full bagrut exams at school.

Much of the tutoring available is informal and individual. A centre with trained tutors, a set curriculum and regular progress reports for parents offers a different, more consistent option.

Areas with potential in the Jerusalem area

Jerusalem's neighbourhoods are distinct, and a centre's location shapes its families. Areas worth considering include:

  • Rehavia, Talbiya, the German Colony and Baka, central neighbourhoods with many English-speaking and professional families.
  • Katamon, Arnona and Talpiot, family neighbourhoods in the south of the city with good commercial streets.
  • Beit HaKerem, Kiryat Yovel and Ramat Sharett, established neighbourhoods in the west with many schools.
  • Malha, Ir Ganim and Kiryat Menachem, south-western neighbourhoods with many young families and a major shopping centre nearby.
  • Mevaseret Zion, a suburban town just west of the city.

Territories in Jerusalem would be mapped with the partner around the communities they serve, using population, schools and existing providers, and each would have one partner.

Partnering with Success Tutoring

Success Tutoring is an Australian franchise, founded in Sydney in 2017, with centres across Australia. In Jerusalem, its appeal is likely to be strongest among English-speaking families who know the Australian, British or North American style of tutoring, and among Israeli parents who want a structured programme rather than ad hoc private lessons.

Support for a Jerusalem partner can cover the operating system and Success Kit, help choosing and fitting out a centre on a busy local street, recruitment and online training for tutors, learning resources and a structured program, and help planning local marketing before and after the centre opens, with ongoing support from the Success Tutoring team. The franchise agreement and accompanying documents set out what support applies.

Local knowledge of Jerusalem's communities is worth more than a teaching degree for this role.

Frequently asked questions

Which Jerusalem families would a centre serve?

That depends on the location and the partner. Many centres would focus on state and state-religious school families and English-speaking immigrants, but the territory is planned with the partner around the communities they understand.

How would a Jerusalem centre handle the school calendar?

Jerusalem's school streams have different calendars and holidays. A partner would set timetables around the schools in their territory, which is part of the planning we do together.

What laws apply to franchising in Israel?

Israel has no franchise-specific disclosure law. Agreements are governed by contract law, including the duty to negotiate in good faith, and competition law. Seek independent legal advice in Israel before signing.
