Success Tutoring vs Explore Learning: Owning a Tutoring Franchise vs a Chain-Run Centre
Explore Learning runs around 95 company-operated tuition centres across the UK. Success Tutoring is a tutoring franchise you can own. We compare what each model means for you.

By Michael Black
Founder & Global CEO

Explore Learning is the biggest name in British after-school tuition centres. Founded in 2001, it operates around 95 centres across the UK and supports more than 27,000 members every week in centre and online (company website). It is also, as far as its public materials show, not a franchise: the centres are run by the company, which employs around 4,000 people.
That makes the comparison with Success Tutoring unusual. Success Tutoring is a tutoring franchise, founded in Sydney in 2017, that has announced the United Kingdom as one of its international markets. The two brands serve a similar family, in a similar space, with a similar membership relationship. The difference is who owns the centre. If you are a prospective business owner in the UK, that difference is the whole decision, so this guide focuses on it.
At a glance
- Explore Learning: Founded in 2001 by entrepreneur Bill Mills; the first centre opened in Chelmsford, Essex, and the company is headquartered in Guildford (company press page, PitchBook). Backed by private equity firm Graphite Capital since a 2012 management buy-out (Graphite Capital).
- Model: Company-operated tuition centres plus online tuition for children aged 4 to 16 in maths and English, including SATs, 11 Plus and GCSE preparation (company press page). Monthly membership with no joining fee.
- Pricing: In-centre membership from about £114 to £124 per month for one session a week and £149 to £159 for two, depending on the page and date; online one-to-one from £149 per month (company pricing pages, 2026).
- Success Tutoring: Tutoring franchise founded in 2017 by Michael Black and franchising since around 2020. Retail-style learning centres for K-12 English and Mathematics on a membership model, owned and run by franchise partners.
- Footprint: Success Tutoring reported 35 centres in Australia with a launch schedule for 80 more in 2023 (Franchise Executives), and has announced New Zealand, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Singapore and India as international markets.
A chain-run centre and a tutoring franchise: what is actually different
From the pavement, an Explore Learning centre and a Success Tutoring centre look like close cousins. Both are bright, retail-style spaces. Both ask families to join as members rather than pay per lesson. Both focus on maths and English for school-age children. Both run on a schedule of regular weekly sessions.
Behind the counter, they are different enterprises.
Explore Learning centres are owned and run by the company. The centre director is an employee who is paid a salary and may progress within the business. Pricing, curriculum, marketing and site selection are decided centrally. The growth of the network is funded by the company and its investors, which is why it was able to expand from a single Chelmsford centre to more than 90 sites.
Success Tutoring centres are owned by franchise partners. You sign a franchise agreement for a territory, lease and fit out your centre with head office support, employ your tutors, enrol your members and keep the business income after royalties and operating costs. When you want to exit, you sell a business with a member base, a team and a lease. Head office owns the brand, the curriculum and the system; you own the centre.
Neither structure is right or wrong. A chain gives families consistency and gives employees a career ladder. A tutoring franchise gives a business owner equity, local autonomy within a system and the upside of growth.
What students get
Explore Learning members attend sessions in centre or online, typically working through personalised maths and English programmes with tutor support, plus targeted courses for the 11 Plus, SATs and GCSEs. Its scale has allowed it to invest in its own content and in initiatives such as the Big Dream Programme launched in 2024 (Graphite Capital). It has won industry recognition, including an "Excellence in Impact" award at the 2024 BVCA Summit.
Success Tutoring members attend a local centre where trained tutors deliver a K-12 English and Mathematics curriculum developed and maintained by head office. The culture is a deliberate part of the product: open, encouraging spaces, the mascot Lucky the Kangaroo, and the values Motivate, Uplift, Inspire. The brand's thesis is that children who enjoy coming to a centre stay longer and progress further, and that the owner's personal presence in the community is part of why families trust it.
For a family, both offer structured, regular, membership-based tuition. For a prospective owner, the question is which of them you can own.
What franchise partners get
Explore Learning does not advertise a franchise programme, so there is no franchisee package to compare. The equivalent path is employment: centre directors and assistant directors are recruited as salaried staff and trained internally.
Success Tutoring provides a complete operating system to franchise partners, packaged as the "Success Kit":
- Launch and pre-marketing support: the model is designed so that centres sign members before they open, and centres have reported opening with 45, 55, 60 and 70+ members on day one.
- Site selection, leasing and fit-out support for retail-style premises.
- Tutor recruitment and tutor training through an online franchise training platform.
- Curriculum and learning resources for K-12 English and Maths.
- Ongoing marketing support and a brand that is active or announced in six international markets.
- A flat franchising structure: franchise partners deal directly with head office leadership rather than through regional management.
Franchise partners do not need a teaching qualification. Many come from corporate, engineering, finance and small-business backgrounds, and their experiences are documented in our franchise stories.
Investment and fees for a tutoring franchise versus a chain
Because Explore Learning is not a franchise, there is no entry fee to compare. What its public pricing does give a prospective tutoring franchise owner is a useful benchmark for what UK families pay for membership-based tuition: roughly £114 to £124 a month for one weekly session and £149 to £159 for two, with no joining fee (company pricing pages, 2026). Those figures tell you the market has accepted a monthly membership for maths and English at a meaningful price point, which is exactly the relationship a Success Tutoring centre is built on.
Success Tutoring does not publish franchise fees, royalties or set-up costs in articles. Figures change, and every candidate receives a full disclosure document before signing. The current structure is on our investment schedule page, and our potential earnings page explains how to model centre revenue responsibly.
When you model a franchised centre against the chain benchmark, remember the structural difference: in a chain, revenue flows to the company and the centre director earns a salary. In a franchise, revenue flows to your business, and you pay the franchisor a royalty for the system and brand. The second carries more risk and more upside.
Markets and footprint
Explore Learning is a UK-only business. Its property page reports 95 centres across the UK with more than 27,000 members attending each week, and the company says it employs around 4,000 people (company press page). An earlier Graphite Capital notice cited 62 centres nationally, so the network has grown substantially under its current ownership.
Success Tutoring is Australian-born and expanding internationally. Reported Australian milestones include 35 centres with a launch schedule for 80 more (Franchise Executives, 2023) and franchise territories sold in more than 100 Australian locations (Inside Small Business). The United Kingdom is one of the announced international markets, alongside New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Singapore and India. Treat these as snapshots and check available locations for the current status of UK territories.
For a UK buyer, this means the two brands sit at opposite ends of the maturity curve. Explore Learning is the established incumbent with no ownership path. Success Tutoring is an entrant offering first-mover territories to franchise partners.
Who each option suits
Explore Learning may suit you if you want a salaried career in children's education with a clear progression path, or you are a family looking for an established, widely available tuition brand. It is not an option for someone who wants to own a centre.
Success Tutoring may suit you if you want to own a tutoring business in your community, you want a system and pre-launch marketing rather than building from zero, you come from a business or professional background rather than teaching, and you are attracted to joining a brand early in a new market.

Frequently asked questions
Is Explore Learning a franchise?
Not according to its public materials. Explore Learning operates its centres directly, employs around 4,000 people and has grown with private equity backing. It does not advertise franchise opportunities.
How much does Explore Learning cost families?
Company pricing pages in 2026 showed in-centre membership from about £114 to £124 per month for one session a week and £149 to £159 for two, with online one-to-one from £149 per month and no joining fee. Prices vary by centre and may have changed.
Can I buy a tutoring franchise in the UK with Success Tutoring?
The United Kingdom is one of Success Tutoring's announced international markets. Check our available locations page or enquire directly for current territory availability.
Do I need to be a teacher to own a Success Tutoring centre?
No. Franchise partners run the business and recruit tutors with head office support. Training covers operations, marketing, member management and team leadership.
Is a franchise riskier than working for a chain?
Yes, in the sense that you are investing capital and your income depends on the centre's performance. The trade-off is ownership: the ability to build equity, grow to multiple centres and sell the business.
Explore Learning has proven that UK families will commit to monthly membership for maths and English tuition. A tutoring franchise lets you own the business that serves that demand in your own town.
