Merseyside has a school system that surprises many newcomers. On one side of the Mersey, Liverpool is largely non-selective but has strong Catholic and Church of England schools and one selective academy. On the other, Wirral runs a grammar school system with its own 11+. For a tutoring franchise in Liverpool, that mix means demand from primary-age families preparing for tests as well as from GCSE students across the city region.
Merseyside is not yet on Success Tutoring's UK map, which currently stretches as far north-west as Bolton. The brand wants partners for Liverpool and Wirral.
Liverpool had a population of about 487,000 at the 2021 Census (ONS), and the Liverpool City Region, including Wirral, Sefton, Knowsley, St Helens and Halton, has around 1.6 million.
Schools on both sides of the Mersey
Merseyside schools teach the National Curriculum and answer to Ofsted, but the local system has its own features:
- Wirral's grammar schools, including Calday Grange Grammar School, West Kirby Grammar School, Wirral Grammar School for Boys, Wirral Grammar School for Girls, Upton Hall School and St Anselm's College. Children sit the Wirral 11+ in Year 6.
- The Blue Coat School in Liverpool, a selective state academy with an entrance test and one of the most sought-after schools in the region.
- Faith schools, which make up a large share of Liverpool's secondary places and often have their own admissions criteria.
- Independent schools such as Merchant Taylors' in Crosby, Liverpool College and St Mary's College, which set their own entrance assessments.
After 11, GCSEs and A-levels are the main checkpoints, with grade 4 in English and Maths the threshold that decides many post-16 routes.
Why Merseyside families use tuition
The Wirral 11+ and the Blue Coat entrance test create early demand, with families often starting tuition in Year 4 or Year 5. In Liverpool itself, faith school admissions and GCSE results matter most. Merseyside also has areas of high disadvantage, where parents who want more for their children see after-school support as an important step.
The city region's economy has grown around the universities, health and life sciences, the port and the visitor economy, bringing in families who want structured help for children adjusting to new schools. A weekly membership in English and Maths fits the long build-up to both 11+ and GCSE.
Where the opportunity is on Merseyside
With no territories drawn yet, the most promising early areas are likely to be:
- South Liverpool: Allerton, Woolton, Childwall, Mossley Hill and Aigburth, with established family housing and strong schools.
- Sefton: Crosby, Formby, Maghull and Bootle, along the coast north of the city.
- Wirral: Birkenhead, Wallasey, Heswall, West Kirby and Bebington, where grammar school entry drives demand.
- Knowsley: Huyton and Prescot, where new housing is attracting families.
- Regeneration areas: Liverpool Waters on the northern docks, the Baltic Triangle and Wirral Waters in Birkenhead.
Each Merseyside territory would be agreed with its partner and drawn around the households and schools a centre can realistically serve.
Running a Success Tutoring centre on Merseyside
On Merseyside, support can help a partner find and fit out a retail unit, recruit and train tutors, use the learning resources and structured programme, and plan local marketing before and after opening. The franchise agreement and disclosure documents lay out the support on offer.
Liverpool's three universities give partners access to a large pool of potential tutors. You do not need to be a teacher; partners run the business and lead the team.
Frequently asked questions
