Cardiff is the capital of Wales and one of the fastest-growing cities in the UK. Its population has risen steadily for decades, new communities are being built on its northern and western edges, and its schools are working through the biggest curriculum change in Wales in a generation. For a tutoring franchise in Cardiff, that adds up to more children, more families new to the city, and parents who want a clear picture of how their child is doing.
Wales has no Success Tutoring territories yet, even though the UK is an announced market for the brand. Cardiff is where a first Welsh partner would most likely start.
Cardiff had a population of about 362,000 at the 2021 Census (ONS), and the wider Cardiff Capital Region, stretching from the Vale of Glamorgan to the valleys and Newport, is home to around 1.5 million.
Cardiff's schools and the new Welsh system
Education in Wales is devolved. Schools follow the Curriculum for Wales, introduced from September 2022, and are inspected by Estyn. The main exam board is WJEC, and qualifications are regulated by Qualifications Wales.
Key points for Cardiff families:
- Personalised assessments in reading and numeracy from Year 2 to Year 9, taken online and adapted to each pupil.
- Made-for-Wales GCSEs, the first of which started teaching in September 2025, with more subjects following in September 2026.
- A-levels in Years 12 and 13, mostly through WJEC.
There are no grammar schools in Wales. Cardiff's secondary schools are comprehensive, and admission is mainly by catchment, so schools such as Radyr, Whitchurch, Cardiff High and Llanishen High influence where families choose to live.
Cardiff also has a large and growing Welsh-medium sector, with secondary schools including Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf, Plasmawr, Bro Edern and Glan Morfa. Many children in Welsh-medium schools come from homes where English is the main language, and their parents often want extra support in English and Maths.
The independent sector includes Cardiff Sixth Form College, Howell's School Llandaff, The Cathedral School Llandaff and Kings Monkton School, each with its own admissions.
Why Cardiff families use tuition
Change is a big driver. The Curriculum for Wales and the new GCSEs mean reports and courses look different from what parents remember, and many want an outside view. GCSE English and Maths still decide access to sixth form, college and apprenticeships.
Cardiff is also a city of newcomers. Students who stay after graduating, families moving from England for more affordable housing, and families from overseas working at the universities, the hospitals and the civil service all want reliable local support for their children. A weekly membership in English and Maths gives them a steady programme rather than a scramble before exams.
Where the growth is in Cardiff
With no territories drawn yet, likely early catchments include:
- North-west Cardiff: Radyr, Danescourt, Fairwater and the large Plasdŵr development, one of the biggest new communities in Wales.
- North Cardiff: Whitchurch, Llanishen, Lisvane and Rhiwbina, popular with families.
- North-east Cardiff: Pontprennau, Pentwyn and the St Edeyrn's Village development.
- Cardiff Bay and the city centre: new apartments and regeneration around the bay.
- Penarth and Barry, in the Vale of Glamorgan, including the Barry Waterfront development.
Any Cardiff territory would be agreed with the partner who takes it, built around a catchment of homes and schools rather than ward boundaries.
Running a Success Tutoring centre in Cardiff
A Cardiff partner would not be starting from scratch. Support from head office can include the hunt for a suitable unit, the lease and the fit-out, tutor recruitment and training, learning resources, and launch and marketing support for a new centre. The franchise agreement and disclosure documents describe that support in full.
Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University and the University of South Wales give the city a strong pool of tutors. You do not need to be a teacher; partners run the business and lead the team.
Frequently asked questions
Are there grammar schools in Cardiff?
No. Wales has no grammar schools. Cardiff's secondary schools are comprehensive, with admission mainly by catchment.
How do the new Welsh GCSEs affect demand for tuition?
The new WJEC GCSEs, introduced from September 2025, have changed course content and assessment. Many parents want help making sense of the changes and keeping their child on track in English and Maths.
Is Success Tutoring open in Cardiff?
Not yet. Cardiff is an opportunity market, and partners here would open the first centres in Wales.
What franchise laws apply in Wales?
Welsh franchise buyers are covered by ordinary contract law rather than a franchise act; the UK has no such statute. The British Franchise Association's ethics code binds only its members, so ask about it and take independent legal advice.
See the Wales page, read the UK tutoring franchise guide or follow the process.
