Edinburgh's school market is unlike anywhere else in Scotland. The capital has a far larger independent sector than any other Scottish city, so a big share of families are used to entrance assessments and paying for education. Alongside that, its catchment state schools are some of the most sought after in the country, and the city is growing fast, with new communities on every side. For anyone considering a tutoring franchise in Edinburgh, those factors combine into strong, year-round demand.
Scotland's capital has not been mapped yet. Success Tutoring has announced the UK as a market and wants partners to take the first Edinburgh and Lothian territories.
Edinburgh had a population of about 513,000 at Scotland's Census 2022, and it has been one of the fastest-growing cities in Scotland for two decades.
Edinburgh's schools
Edinburgh follows Curriculum for Excellence, with seven years of primary school, a Broad General Education to the end of S3, then National 5s in S4, Highers in S5 and S6 and Advanced Highers in S6. Qualifications are now run by Qualifications Scotland, which replaced the SQA in February 2026.
The state sector is non-selective and organised by catchment. Schools such as Boroughmuir, James Gillespie's, the Royal High School and schools in the south and west of the city carry a premium on house prices.
Edinburgh's independent sector is its defining feature. It includes George Watson's College, George Heriot's School, The Edinburgh Academy, Stewart's Melville College and The Mary Erskine School, St George's School for Girls, Merchiston Castle School and Fettes College. Many hold entrance assessments at primary and secondary entry points, and families often apply to more than one.
Since VAT was applied to independent school fees in January 2025, some families have reportedly moved children into the state sector, and many of those parents still want extra support outside school.
Why Edinburgh families use tuition
Independent school entrance creates demand from primary age onwards. Families preparing for assessments at P7 or S1 want support in English and Maths. In the state sector, parents want their children to get the most from popular catchment schools and to achieve the Higher grades needed for competitive university courses, including at the University of Edinburgh, where competition for places is intense.
Edinburgh's economy, built around finance, government, universities and technology, also attracts professional families from across the UK and abroad. Many are new to the Scottish system and want help understanding National 5s and Highers. A weekly membership in English and Maths fits this broad demand.
Where the growth is in Edinburgh
With no territories drawn yet, likely early catchments include:
- South Edinburgh: Morningside, Bruntsfield, Marchmont, Liberton and the Gilmerton and Broomhills developments.
- West Edinburgh: Corstorphine, Barnton, South Gyle and the planned growth around the airport and the Edinburgh Park area.
- North Edinburgh: Trinity, Inverleith and the Granton Waterfront regeneration.
- Midlothian: Shawfair, Dalkeith, Bonnyrigg and Penicuik, with large new housing developments along the Borders Railway.
- East and West Lothian: Musselburgh, the Blindwells new town, Livingston and Winchburgh.
Edinburgh territories would be drawn with the partners who take them, following real catchments of homes and schools, and each would be exclusive.
What an Edinburgh franchise partner gets
For partners in the capital, support can include help securing and fitting out a shopfront, tutor recruitment and training, learning resources and a structured programme, and assistance planning local marketing for the opening period. Partners have ongoing support from head office, and the franchise agreement and disclosure documents explain the terms of that support.
The city's universities, including Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt, Napier and Queen Margaret, supply a strong pool of tutors. Anyone working with children will need PVG scheme membership through Disclosure Scotland. You do not need a teaching background.
Frequently asked questions
Does Edinburgh have grammar schools?
No. Scotland has no state grammar schools. Edinburgh's selective route is its large independent sector, which uses entrance assessments.
Is Success Tutoring open in Edinburgh?
Not yet. Edinburgh and the Lothians are an opportunity market, and partners here would open the first centres.
Can tuition support pupils preparing for Highers?
Yes. Success Tutoring's core subjects are English and Maths, both central to Higher results and university entry.
What legal advice should I get before buying a franchise in Scotland?
Scots contract law governs a franchise agreement in Edinburgh; there is no franchise statute in Scotland or the wider UK. The British Franchise Association's ethics code is voluntary, so instruct a Scottish solicitor and seek independent legal advice before signing.
