The Best Tutoring Franchises in the UK: 2026 Comparison | Success Tutoring New Lynn Grand Opening

Private tuition has become a mainstream part of British schooling. The Sutton Trust's Private Tutoring 2026 report finds that 29% of secondary pupils in England and Wales have had private tutoring at some point, up from 18% when the charity began tracking the figure twenty years ago and 27% in 2019. In London the figure is 45%. For anyone weighing a tutoring franchise in the UK in 2026, that is the demand backdrop. The harder question is which model to back: a low-cost community-venue study centre, a teacher-led franchise, a high-street learning centre or an in-home network. This guide compares eight brands, Success Tutoring, Kumon, Kip McGrath, Explore Learning, First Class Learning, MagiKats, Tutor Doctor and Mathnasium UK, with attributed figures and a framework for choosing the best tutoring franchise for your area.

How we compared each tutoring franchise

A tutoring franchise licenses you to run a tuition business under an established brand, with curriculum, systems, training and marketing supplied by the franchisor in return for an initial fee and ongoing royalties. For each brand we looked at the model (centre, community venue, classroom or in-home), subjects and ages, published fee and investment figures with their source and year, royalty structure, UK footprint and whether franchisees need to be teachers.

Two UK-specific points shape the comparison. First, the UK has no franchise-specific legislation; franchising is governed by general commercial and competition law, and there is no statutory requirement for pre-contract disclosure. The British Franchise Association (BFA) operates a voluntary Code of Ethics that its members follow, so BFA membership is a useful but not mandatory signal. Second, published UK fee figures tend to come from franchise directories rather than disclosure documents, so they are less standardised than in the US or Canada. Treat the figures below as rounded and indicative, request each brand's prospectus and franchise agreement, and take legal advice from a franchise solicitor before signing.

Success Tutoring

Success Tutoring is an Australian-founded K-12 tutoring franchise that has publicly named the United Kingdom among its next international markets, alongside launches already announced in New Zealand, the United States, Singapore, Canada and India. Founded in Sydney in 2017 by Michael Black and franchising since around 2020, it reported 35 Australian centres in 2023 with 80 more scheduled (Franchise Executives). The model is a retail-style learning centre where families join as members for English and Maths support from the first year of school to the final year. Centres have opened with 45 to 70 or more members signed before opening day through launch pre-marketing, according to company news posts. Partners receive leasing and fit-out support, tutor recruitment and training through an online platform, curriculum and learning resources, ongoing marketing and a flat franchising model with direct access to head office leadership. Franchise partners do not need to be teachers. The company is a member of the Franchise Council of Australia and the International Franchise Association and has hired a former CEO of Kumon as Head of Global Partnerships. Investment detail is on our investment schedule; UK territory enquiries go through available locations.

Kumon

Kumon is the UK's largest tuition franchise by centre count, with UK listings citing more than 600 to 650 study centres across the UK and Ireland, and Kumon reporting a global presence in 60 countries and more than 3.5 million students. The model is a worksheet-based maths and English programme in which children work independently under an instructor, often in a community venue such as a church hall or school. Franchise Direct UK lists an initial franchise fee of approximately £3,000 and a total investment of roughly £20,000 to £40,000; Entrepreneur UK notes that community-venue centres can start for considerably less. It suits an owner-operator who wants a very low entry cost and a globally recognised brand and is comfortable running sessions personally. Read Success Tutoring vs Kumon.

Kip McGrath Education Centres

Kip McGrath has tutored children since 1976 and is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange. Its FY2025 results describe corporate and franchise centres across more than 450 locations globally, and the UK has long been its largest market outside Australia; an older business listing cited more than 200 UK centres. In FY2025 the company completed what it described as a decisive exit from its US operations, refocusing on its core markets. Kip McGrath has historically required its franchisees to be qualified teachers, according to published investor analysis, and its centres offer English and maths tuition for school-aged children. We could not verify a current published UK franchise fee, so request the franchise information pack directly. Kip McGrath suits a qualified teacher who wants to own a tuition business under a long-established brand. See Success Tutoring vs Kip McGrath.

Explore Learning

Explore Learning is included because it is the UK's most visible high-street tuition chain, but it is not a franchise. The company opened its first centre in Chelmsford, Essex, in October 2001 and, according to its own website, runs around 95 centres and an online platform, supporting more than 27,000 children a week in maths and English for ages 4 to 16. It is owned by private equity firm Graphite Capital, and its public materials describe company-operated centres rather than franchise opportunities. For a prospective franchisee, Explore Learning matters as a competitor and a proof point: it has demonstrated for more than two decades that British parents will pay for membership-style, centre-based maths and English tuition in shopping centres and on the high street. If you want to own that kind of business rather than work for it, a franchise is the route.

First Class Learning

First Class Learning (FCL) is a UK maths and English tuition franchise run through after-school centres, typically in community venues. Franchise World reported the network at more than 300 franchisees, with expansion targeted in cities including Birmingham and Manchester, and a franchise directory ranked it in the UK's top 100 franchises in 2023. Franchisees choose their own days, times and fee structure, which makes it one of the more flexible models in this list. You do not need teaching experience, but FCL asks for degree-level education and a DBS check. We could not verify a published franchise fee or founding year from the sources available, so request the prospectus. FCL suits a graduate who wants a part-time or scalable tuition business with low premises costs and a well-sized UK peer network.

MagiKats

MagiKats is a UK maths and English tuition franchise offering single-unit and multi-unit territories, with the BFA listing noting that franchisees come from all walks of life and do not need an education or teaching background. A UK franchise directory lists a minimum investment of approximately £12,000, with third-party finance available, and describes the business as having originated in Luton. We could not reconcile the founding date given across sources, so we have left it out. The model is workshop-style tuition in small groups using the brand's own materials, run from community or leased venues. MagiKats suits a first-time franchisee with modest capital who wants a recognised BFA-affiliated brand and the option to add territories later.

Tutor Doctor

Tutor Doctor is a home-based franchise: the owner manages a roster of tutors who teach in the family's home or online, so there is no centre to lease or fit out. Founded in 2000 in Canada and franchising since 2003, it reports more than 730 territories across 16 countries including the UK (FranchisePayback). Published fee figures are largely from US disclosure summaries (an initial fee of approximately USD 54,700 and an 8% royalty plus a 2% advertising fund, per FranNet and other directories); we could not verify a separate published UK fee, so request it directly. The attraction is low overhead; the trade-off is no physical presence in the community and a revenue line that depends on the owner's own sales activity. See Success Tutoring vs Tutor Doctor.

Mathnasium UK

Mathnasium is a US-born, maths-only learning centre franchise with, according to Elite Franchise Magazine, more than 1,200 centres worldwide and a growing UK network with a stated ambition to roughly double to 80 or more UK centres. UK figures vary by listing: one franchise consultancy lists an initial franchise fee of approximately £29,500 and total investment of £100,000 to £200,000 with a 10% royalty and 2% marketing fee; Franchise Direct UK cites a total of roughly £77,000 to £120,000; Elite Franchise lists a minimum investment of £90,000. Centres are dedicated learning centres where instructors teach from a proprietary maths curriculum. It suits an owner who wants a premium single-subject centre and can fund a full fit-out. See Mathnasium vs Success Tutoring.

How to choose the best tutoring franchise in the UK

  • Venue model first. Community-venue models (Kumon, First Class Learning, MagiKats) and in-home models (Tutor Doctor) cost least but build little physical brand presence. High-street centres (Success Tutoring, Mathnasium UK) cost more and create a visible, sellable local asset, as Explore Learning has shown works in the UK.
  • Teacher or operator? Kip McGrath has historically required qualified teachers. Success Tutoring, First Class Learning and MagiKats state that a teaching background is not required; confirm requirements with the other brands directly.
  • Subject breadth. Maths-only (Mathnasium) is clear but narrow; maths and English brands serve more of the catchment for longer.
  • Membership or sessions? Membership models give recurring revenue and longer family relationships; see potential earnings for how we model a centre.
  • Check BFA status and ask for the full fee schedule, including royalties, marketing levies and renewal terms, since UK brands are not legally required to disclose them in a standard document.
  • Ask about launch. Opening with members already signed changes your first year; read our launch support page and the guide tutoring franchise vs starting from scratch.

Frequently asked questions

Is franchising regulated in the UK?

There is no franchise-specific law. General commercial and competition law applies, and the British Franchise Association operates a voluntary Code of Ethics. There is no statutory pre-contract disclosure requirement, so insist on full written information and take legal advice.

What is the cheapest tutoring franchise in the UK?

Kumon's published initial fee of approximately £3,000 (Franchise Direct UK) and MagiKats' listed minimum investment of around £12,000 are among the lowest. Both are community-venue models where the owner typically delivers sessions personally.

Do I need to be a teacher to run a tutoring franchise in the UK?

It depends on the brand. Kip McGrath has historically required qualified teachers. Success Tutoring, First Class Learning and MagiKats state that a teaching background is not required, although FCL asks for degree-level education and every brand will require safeguarding checks. Confirm requirements with each franchisor.

Is Explore Learning a franchise?

No. Explore Learning operates its roughly 95 centres directly under private equity ownership. It is a competitor to franchised centres rather than a franchise opportunity.

Is Success Tutoring open in the UK yet?

Success Tutoring has publicly named the UK among its next international markets but we are not announcing a UK opening date in this article. Register interest through available locations to be contacted when UK territories are released.
