Reading is the largest town in the Thames Valley and one of the most competitive education markets outside London. Two of England's most oversubscribed state grammar schools, Kendrick School for girls and Reading School for boys, are in the town centre, and the surrounding Wokingham borough is known for strong school results. For a tutoring franchise in Reading, that combination means early 11+ demand and families who expect high GCSE and A-level grades.
Success Tutoring has announced the United Kingdom as an international market. No territories have been drawn in Reading yet, though the map already covers Slough, Langley and the western edge of London to the east. The company is looking for franchise partners to open in Reading and the surrounding area.
Schools in Reading and Berkshire
Schools follow the National Curriculum and are inspected by Ofsted. Berkshire is made up of six unitary authorities, including Reading, Wokingham, West Berkshire and Bracknell Forest, each with its own admissions.
What sets Reading apart is selection. Kendrick School and Reading School admit pupils by an 11+ test sat early in Year 6, and draw applicants from well beyond the town. Places are heavily oversubscribed. Around 20 miles east, Slough has four more grammar schools, and Buckinghamshire runs a fully selective system to the north-east. Many Reading-area families register for more than one test.
The area also has a large independent sector, including Reading Blue Coat School, The Abbey School, Queen Anne's School, Leighton Park and Wellington College to the south, each with its own entrance exam.
Beyond 11, GCSEs and A-levels are the focus. Expectations are high, and families look for help to secure top grades as much as to reach grade 4.
Why Reading families use tuition
The Reading 11+ is the headline driver. In many households, English and Maths tuition starts in Year 4. The Thames Valley economy, built around technology, pharmaceuticals and professional services, also brings in families from across the UK and around the world, many of whom are used to after-school learning and want a structured option close to home.
Busy dual-income households, long commutes into London on the Elizabeth line and Great Western routes, and a highly competitive local schools picture all point towards a weekly membership centre rather than ad hoc tutoring.
Where the growth is around Reading
With no territories drawn in Reading yet, likely early catchments include:
- Central and east Reading: Earley, Woodley, Caversham and the areas around the University of Reading.
- Wokingham borough: Wokingham town, Arborfield Green, Shinfield and the South Wokingham development, some of the largest new communities in the South East.
- South Reading: Green Park Village and Kennet Island, both newer neighbourhoods near the M4.
- West of Reading: Tilehurst, Calcot, Theale and Purley.
- Bracknell, a growing town with major regeneration.
Reading territories would be shaped with the partners who take them.
Running a Success Tutoring centre in Reading

The support provided is described in the franchise agreement and disclosure documents.
You do not need to be a teacher. Many Success Tutoring partners come from corporate, technology and finance careers, which the Thames Valley has in abundance.
