Surat cuts and polishes most of the world's diamonds and weaves a large share of India's synthetic fabric. That industry has drawn people from Saurashtra, from across Gujarat and from states as far away as Odisha and Uttar Pradesh, and it has made Surat one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. Many families who arrived with little now own workshops, trading firms or apartments in the new suburbs, and education is where they invest next. A tutoring franchise in Surat would serve that ambition. Success Tutoring, which has announced India as one of its international markets, is looking for partners to open its first Surat centres.
Why Surat parents look beyond the classroom
Surat's prosperity is recent for many households. Plenty of parents left school early to join the family trade or a diamond unit, and they want their children to have the qualifications they missed. That shows up in three ways.
- A push towards English-medium schools. Parents who grew up speaking Gujarati, Surti or Hindi at home often choose English-medium schooling and then look for support so their children are not left behind.
- High stakes at Class 10 and Class 12. SSC and HSC marks under the Gujarat State Board decide stream choices and college places, and the city's coaching lanes fill up every evening.
- Second-generation business families who want children ready for professional degrees, commerce courses or study abroad, rather than an automatic place in the business.
Most tuition on offer is board-exam or entrance coaching for teenagers. Younger children are usually served by a home tutor or a small neighbourhood class. A centre where members attend on a regular weekly schedule from the early school years is still unusual in Surat.
Schools and exams in Surat
Families here choose between Gujarat State Board schools, which run in Gujarati, English and, in some areas, Hindi medium, and the CBSE and ICSE schools that have opened in the western suburbs. A few international schools offer IB or Cambridge programmes, mostly along the Dumas Road and Vesu side of the city. Surat also has a sizeable Marathi-speaking population in neighbourhoods such as Udhna and Limbayat, and some schools teach in Marathi.
Higher education is close at hand. Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) and Veer Narmad South Gujarat University are both in the city, which keeps engineering and science ambitions high. GUJCET, JEE and NEET are the main entrance hurdles for older students.
Neighbourhoods where families are settling
Surat has grown outwards from the walled old city along the Tapi River. Areas to study include:
- Vesu, Althan, Bhatar and Piplod, the south-western belt of high-rise apartments popular with professional and business families.
- Pal, Adajan and Rander across the river, older suburbs now joined by large new housing projects.
- Citylight, Ghod Dod Road and Athwa, established, central neighbourhoods with many schools.
- Varachha, Mota Varachha, Sarthana and Yogi Chowk in the east, home to many Saurashtrian diamond families and a large number of children.
- Katargam and Amroli to the north, and Udhna, Pandesara and Sachin in the industrial south.
- Kamrej and the road towards Kadodara, where new townships are spreading beyond the city limit.
The Surat Metro is under construction, the Surat Diamond Bourse has opened at Khajod, and the city is due a station on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail line. Each will shift where families choose to live over the coming years. Surat's territory map is empty for now; Success Tutoring draws territories with partners after looking at families, children, schools and existing tuition in each catchment.
The partner role in Surat
Success Tutoring centres are retail-style learning spaces rather than home classes. Support that may be provided to a partner includes help with site selection, leasing and fit-out, recruiting and training tutors through an online platform, learning resources, the Success Kit operating system, and marketing before and after launch. The exact scope is set out in the franchise agreement and disclosure documents.
Partners do not need to be teachers. Success Tutoring partners have come from corporate, engineering, finance and small-business backgrounds, and Surat has no shortage of people who have built and run a business from scratch.
Frequently asked questions
Is Surat a better fit than Ahmedabad for a first centre?
They are different markets. Surat has many first-generation business families and fast-growing eastern suburbs, while Ahmedabad has a larger established professional base. Success Tutoring looks at catchment data for any proposed location before drawing a territory.
Can a territory cover both Adajan and Pal?
Territories are drawn around a realistic catchment of families and schools rather than ward lines, so neighbouring suburbs can sit together. The boundary is agreed with the partner.
Would a centre suit families in Varachha as well as Vesu?
Both have large numbers of school-age children. The best site depends on local demand, rents and competition, which is why each territory is assessed individually.
What legal checks apply to a franchise in Surat?
India has no franchise-specific disclosure law, so the agreement is governed by general law such as the Indian Contract Act 1872. Ask a lawyer to review it, and to check whether a centre for school children needs registration under the Ministry of Education's 2024 coaching centre guidelines as applied in Gujarat. Always seek independent legal advice before signing.
