Punjab is a state where education is closely tied to ambition. Families in Ludhiana, Amritsar and Jalandhar plan their children's schooling with an eye on careers in India and, for many households, study or work in Canada, the UK or Australia. A tutoring franchise in Punjab with Success Tutoring would offer those families something the state's busy coaching market rarely provides: steady, structured K-12 tutoring from the early grades, in a local centre with regular weekly sessions. India is one of Success Tutoring's announced international markets, and Punjab is a state where it is looking for franchise partners.

Boards, languages and the Punjab school system

The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB), headquartered in SAS Nagar (Mohali), sets the syllabus and conducts the Class 10 and Class 12 exams for government schools and many private schools. The state government has also developed its Schools of Eminence, upgraded government schools intended to offer a higher standard of education.

In the cities, CBSE schools are the first choice for many middle-class families, and ICSE schools, often run by long-established Christian and convent trusts, have a strong following. Language is a distinctive feature. Under the Punjab Learning of Punjabi and Other Languages Act 2008, and a February 2025 state notification, Punjabi must be studied as a main subject up to Class 10 in schools of every board in the state. Most children therefore learn Punjabi, Hindi and English, with Punjabi in Gurmukhi script at the core.

After Class 12, students face CUET, JEE and NEET, and the state has strong institutions to aim for, including IIT Ropar, IISER Mohali, IIM Amritsar, AIIMS Bathinda, Punjabi University in Patiala and Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana.

The IELTS economy and what it says about demand

Few places in the world have as many English test coaching centres per town as Punjab. Signboards for IELTS and PTE classes line the main roads of Jalandhar, Moga, Kapurthala and Bathinda. These institutes need a licence under the state's travel professionals regulation law, and district administrations publish lists of licensed and cancelled centres. Tighter student visa rules in Canada have recently forced many IELTS centres to close or scale back, according to reporting in The Tribune.

Two lessons follow for a K-12 tutoring business. First, Punjabi families clearly pay for education and for English in particular. Second, a business that depends on one overseas pathway is exposed to policy changes far away. A centre serving schoolchildren year after year, from primary school to Class 12, rests on a broader and steadier base of local demand.

Majha, Doaba and Malwa: where to look

No territories are drawn in Punjab yet, so territories are outlined with partners using local data on households, children and schools. The state's three traditional regions offer different markets:

  • Malwa, south of the Sutlej, is the largest region. It includes Ludhiana, Punjab's biggest city and industrial capital (see the Ludhiana page), the old royal city of Patiala, and Bathinda, Sangrur, Moga and Barnala.
  • Doaba, between the Beas and the Sutlej, covers Jalandhar, known for sports goods manufacturing, along with Phagwara, Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala. Many families here have relatives overseas and strong expectations of their children's education.
  • Majha, in the north-west, centres on Amritsar, a major pilgrimage and trading city, with Gurdaspur, Batala, Pathankot and Tarn Taran nearby.
  • Mohali and Zirakpur form part of the Chandigarh Tricity, with IT parks, new sectors and fast-growing apartment communities. See the Chandigarh Tricity page.

Running a Success Tutoring centre in Punjab

Success Tutoring began in Sydney in 2017 and operates through franchise partners running retail-style learning centres. A partner may receive support with finding, leasing and fitting out a site; recruiting tutors and training them online; learning resources and the Success Kit operating system; and launch and ongoing marketing. The franchise agreement and disclosure documents set out exactly what is provided.

Partners do not need to be teachers. People from business, engineering, finance and corporate careers have become partners, and Punjab's entrepreneurial culture, from trading families to returning NRIs, fits a locally owned education business.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Success Tutoring centre the same as an IELTS institute?

No. IELTS and PTE institutes prepare adults and older teenagers for English tests used for migration and overseas study. A Success Tutoring centre is a K-12 tutoring business for schoolchildren, so it serves a different family and a different stage of life.

Can I open in Amritsar, Jalandhar or Patiala rather than Ludhiana?

Potentially. Nothing is mapped in Punjab yet, so a territory can be considered for any of the state's larger cities, based on local demand and data on households and schools.

Do coaching centre rules apply in Punjab?

The Union Ministry of Education issued guidelines for coaching centres in January 2024, leaving implementation to the states. IELTS institutes have their own licensing regime in Punjab. Ask a Punjab lawyer which rules, if any, would apply to a centre for school-age children.

Is there a franchise law in India?

No. India has no franchise-specific disclosure law, so a franchise agreement is governed by general law such as the Indian Contract Act 1872, along with trade mark and consumer law. Seek independent legal advice before you sign.
