Success Tutoring vs Mind Stretcher: Which Tutoring Franchise Fits Singapore? | Success Tutoring Mt Roskill Grand Opening

Mind Stretcher is one of the most familiar names in Singapore tuition and enrichment. Founded in 2002, it grew from a single centre into a network of more than two dozen centres offering pre-school, primary and secondary enrichment, tuition and student care. Anyone researching a Mind Stretcher franchise will find that the company is listed as a franchisor with Singapore's Franchising and Licensing Association, but that very little of its franchise offer is published.

Success Tutoring is a tutoring franchise founded in Sydney in 2017 that has announced Singapore as one of its international markets. Its centres are owned and run by franchise partners and focus on English and Mathematics on a membership model. This guide compares the two brands on model, programmes, franchise support, investment and footprint, with every Mind Stretcher fact attributed to a public source.

At a glance

  • Founded: Mind Stretcher in 2002 by co-founders Kristie Lim and Alvin Kuek (National Library Board Singapore). Success Tutoring in 2017 in Western Sydney by Michael Black (Forbes Australia, Inside Small Business).
  • Ownership: Dymon Asia Private Equity made an undisclosed investment in Mind Stretcher Group in September 2024 (DealStreetAsia). Success Tutoring is privately owned and founder-led.
  • Model: Mind Stretcher provides pre-primary and K–12 enrichment, tutorial and student care services (DealStreetAsia), with programmes in English, Mathematics, Science, Creative Writing and Chinese plus pre-school classes for ages 2 to 6 (FLA Singapore listing). Success Tutoring runs retail-style centres for K–12 English and Mathematics on a membership model.
  • Scale: 26 centres and more than 10,000 students at the time of the 2024 investment, and more than 200,000 students served since 2002 (DealStreetAsia). Success Tutoring reported 35 Australian centres with a launch schedule for 80 more in 2023 (Franchise Executives).
  • Fees: Mind Stretcher's franchise fees are listed as available on request (FLA Singapore). Success Tutoring's structure is on its investment schedule.

Two models for a demanding tuition market

Singapore is one of the most intensively tutored markets in the world. The Department of Statistics' Household Expenditure Survey 2023 reported average household spending on tuition of S$104.80 a month, up from S$88.40 in 2018, and The Straits Times estimated total spending at about S$1.8 billion in 2023. High-stakes examinations, from the PSLE to the GCE O and A Levels, keep that demand steady.

Mind Stretcher's founding idea was a response to how tuition centres used to operate. According to the National Library Board's account of the company, many centres in 2002 rented space to part-time teachers on a profit-sharing basis. Kristie Lim's concept was a centre offering a standardised curriculum instead. That decision to own the content and deliver it consistently across centres is what allowed Mind Stretcher to scale into a recognised brand, and it deserves real credit for professionalising a fragmented sector.

Success Tutoring's model rests on a similar principle, a curriculum owned and maintained by head office, but applies it inside a franchise system built for owners who are not necessarily teachers. A franchise partner leases a retail-style centre, recruits and trains tutors, and enrols families as members on a monthly relationship rather than term-by-term class bookings.

What students get

Mind Stretcher offers a broad academic menu. Its franchise listing covers English, Mathematics, Science, Creative Writing and Chinese for K–12 students, plus pre-school programmes for children aged 2 to 6. DealStreetAsia reported that the group also provides student care and had recently introduced Mind Sparks, an after-school care programme. The NLB account describes three regional campuses at Toa Payoh, Tampines and Clementi among its locations. For families, the strength is breadth: one brand can support a child from pre-school through secondary school across most examined subjects.

Success Tutoring is deliberately narrower. Members attend a local centre where trained tutors deliver a K–12 English and Mathematics curriculum, the two subjects Singapore families prioritise from Primary 1. The brand's culture is part of the product: open, encouraging centres, the mascot Lucky the Kangaroo and the values Motivate, Uplift, Inspire. You can see the approach on our learning resources page.

The trade-off for an owner is clear. A multi-subject, multi-age brand gives each centre more ways to earn from a family but needs more specialist teachers and timetabling. A focused English and Maths model is simpler to staff and run, and relies on depth rather than breadth.

What franchise partners get

Mind Stretcher

Mind Stretcher Education Pte Ltd is listed as a franchisor on the Franchising and Licensing Association (Singapore) directory, with a dedicated franchise contact. Its public listing does not set out the training, support or territory terms, and the public profiles we reviewed do not say how many of its centres are franchised. What a franchisee would gain is clear in principle: a brand that has operated in Singapore since 2002, an established curriculum across several subjects and, since 2024, private equity backing. Ask the company for its franchise agreement, its support programme and a list of current franchisees.

Success Tutoring

Success Tutoring provides a turnkey system, the "Success Kit":

Franchise partners do not need to be teachers; many come from corporate, engineering, finance and small-business backgrounds, as our franchise stories show. Success Tutoring has also appointed a former CEO of Kumon as Head of Global Partnerships.

Investment and fees for each tutoring franchise

Mind Stretcher does not publish its franchise fees; the FLA Singapore listing marks fees and royalties as available on request. We could not find a reputable public source for its initial investment, so we do not quote one here.

Success Tutoring does not publish fees, royalties or set-up costs in articles; figures change and every candidate receives full disclosure before signing. The current structure is on our investment schedule, and our potential earnings page explains how to model revenue responsibly.

Singapore's legal framework makes your own diligence essential. Singapore has no franchise-specific statute and no mandatory disclosure document (Pinsent Masons). Franchise agreements fall under general contract, competition, consumer protection and trade mark law, and the FLA's Code of Ethics applies only to its members. Separately, under the Education Act, tuition and enrichment centres offering programmes to 10 or more students must be registered with the Ministry of Education, including their courses and teachers. Ask any franchisor how it supports MOE registration, and have a Singapore lawyer review the agreement.

Markets and footprint

Mind Stretcher is primarily a Singapore business. DealStreetAsia reported 26 centres and more than 10,000 students in 2024. The National Library Board's earlier account cited 22 locations islandwide plus a branch in China. Centre counts vary by date, so ask the company for the current list.

Success Tutoring is Australian-born and expanding internationally. Reported milestones include 35 Australian centres with a launch schedule for 80 more (Franchise Executives, 2023) and franchise territories sold in more than 100 Australian locations (Inside Small Business). Singapore is one of its announced international markets, alongside New Zealand, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and India. Treat these as snapshots and check available locations for current Singapore territories.

Who each option suits

A Mind Stretcher franchise may suit you if you want a brand Singapore parents already know well, you are comfortable running a multi-subject, multi-age centre that may include pre-school and student care, and you are prepared to obtain the full franchise terms directly because little is published.

Success Tutoring may suit you if you want a focused English and Maths tutoring franchise, you value pre-launch member sign-ups and a membership relationship with families, you come from a business rather than teaching background, and you want to join a brand early in its Singapore rollout. Our why invest in tutoring page sets out the case.
