The Best Tutoring Franchises in the USA: 2026 Comparison
Nine US tutoring franchises compared on model, fees, investment and footprint, with FDD-sourced figures: Success Tutoring, Kumon, Mathnasium, Sylvan, Huntington, Tutor Doctor, Club Z!, JEI and Best Brains.

Choosing a tutoring franchise in the USA in 2026 means choosing between very different businesses that happen to share a category. Some are worksheet-based study centers with low entry fees and per-student royalties. Some are full-service learning centers with six-figure build-outs. Some have no center at all and send tutors to the family's home. This guide compares nine of the most searched-for options, Success Tutoring, Kumon, Mathnasium, Sylvan, Huntington, Tutor Doctor, Club Z!, JEI and Best Brains, using figures attributed to Franchise Disclosure Documents (FDDs) and reputable directories, and gives you a framework for choosing the best tutoring franchise for your market.
Demand is not in question. IBISWorld estimates the US tutoring and driving schools category at $18.9 billion in 2025, growing at a 2.6% compound rate over the five years to 2025. The same firm notes that purely online tutoring revenue has declined at a 3.2% compound rate since its lockdown-era peak, which is one reason center-based and in-person models have held their appeal with parents.
How we compared each tutoring franchise
A tutoring franchise is a license to operate a supplemental-education business under a brand, with the franchisor supplying curriculum, systems, training and marketing in return for an initial fee and ongoing royalties. For each brand below we looked at:
- Model: center-based, in-home or hybrid; curriculum-aligned tutoring or a proprietary method; subscription, package or per-session pricing.
- Students: ages and subjects served, which determines how long a family stays.
- Investment: the initial franchise fee and total initial investment range from the FDD (Item 5 and Item 7), with the year and source stated.
- Ongoing fees: royalty and marketing fund structure (Item 6).
- Footprint: approximate unit count and whether the brand is growing.
- Owner profile: whether a teaching background is expected.
Figures below are rounded and attributed. They change every FDD cycle, so request the current document before relying on any of them. Under the FTC Franchise Rule, a franchisor must give you its FDD at least 14 calendar days before you sign or pay anything; several states, including New York, Michigan, Oregon and Wisconsin, add their own timing or registration rules. Seek legal advice on your state.
Success Tutoring
Success Tutoring is an Australian-founded K-12 tutoring franchise that launched in the US through Texas, with a stated ambition of 80 units across the state in five years (Franchise Executives). Founded in Sydney in 2017 by Michael Black and franchising since around 2020, it reported 35 Australian centers in 2023 with 80 more scheduled, and territories sold in more than 100 locations. The model is a retail-style learning center where families join as members for English and math support from kindergarten to grade 12. Centers have opened with 45 to 70 or more members signed before opening day thanks to launch pre-marketing, according to company news posts. Partners receive site selection, leasing and fit-out support, tutor recruitment and training through an online platform, curriculum and ongoing marketing, and deal directly with head office under a flat franchising model. Owners do not need to be teachers. Success Tutoring is a member of the International Franchise Association and has hired a former CEO of Kumon as Head of Global Partnerships. Fees and investment are set out on our investment schedule rather than in articles; Texas territories are listed on available locations.
Kumon
Kumon is the largest supplemental-education franchise in the world by center count, with Kumon reporting a presence in 60 countries and more than 3.5 million students. US directories consistently cite an initial franchise fee of approximately $2,000, with royalties charged per student per subject rather than as a percentage of sales. Total investment figures conflict across sources: one 2025 summary cites roughly $73,000 to $165,000, while another citing the 2026 FDD reports roughly $101,600 to $233,800, so read Item 7 directly. Kumon makes no Item 19 financial performance representation. US center counts are generally reported at around 1,600 to 1,700. The model is a worksheet-based math and reading program in which students work independently under an instructor. It suits owners who want a low entry fee, a globally recognized brand and are comfortable with an instructor-led, self-learning format. Read our full guide: Success Tutoring vs Kumon.
Mathnasium
Mathnasium is a math-only learning center franchise. Franzy, citing FDD Item 7, puts the total initial investment at approximately $113,000 to $150,000, with an initial franchise fee of $49,000 for a first center and $26,500 for additional centers. Royalty is approximately 10% of gross revenue (with a minimum from month 24) plus a 2% marketing fee and a $250 monthly fee, according to FDD summaries. Franzy lists about 1,250 locations; SharpSheets cited 999 US centers in 2024, and Elite Franchise Magazine describes a global network of more than 1,200. Students attend a drop-in style center where instructors work from a proprietary math curriculum. The single-subject focus is a strength for clarity and a limitation for reach: a Mathnasium center cannot serve a family whose child needs help with reading. See Mathnasium vs Success Tutoring.
Sylvan Learning
Sylvan has provided supplemental education since 1979 and is one of the most recognized tutoring names in America. Analyses of the 2025 FDD report a total initial investment of approximately $108,000 to $239,000, an initial franchise fee of $36,900, an 11% royalty and a 5% advertising fee, with minimum liquid capital of $75,000 and net worth of $150,000; Franzy, citing the 2026 FDD, reports a higher range of roughly $118,000 to $288,000 and a $47,000 fee. Sylvan's Item 19 disclosed average gross sales of $386,112 for FY2024, per the same analyses. Unit counts are reported at roughly 430 to 470. Sylvan centers offer K-12 supplemental education in a center setting. It suits owners who want a long-established brand with national recognition and can fund a larger build-out. See Sylvan Learning vs Success Tutoring.
Huntington Learning Center
Huntington has operated since 1977 and sits at the premium end of center-based tutoring. A BizBuySell listing citing the 2025 FDD reports an initial franchise fee of $42,000, a 9.5% royalty, a 2% ad fund, a total initial investment of approximately $192,000 to $341,000, and requirements of $200,000 net worth and $110,000 in cash. Earlier 2024 FDD summaries listed a $36,000 fee and a roughly $164,000 to $302,000 range. Reported average center revenue is around $560,000 to $609,000 depending on the FDD year and source. Unit counts range from about 245 to 270 across sources. Huntington offers K-12 tutoring in a formal center environment, and its higher investment reflects larger premises and staffing. It suits well-capitalized owners targeting affluent suburbs with strong test-prep demand.
Tutor Doctor
Tutor Doctor is a home-based franchise: the owner manages a roster of tutors who teach in the family's home or online, so there is no center lease or fit-out. Founded in 2000 in Canada and franchising since 2003, with its parent Clear Summit Group based in Toronto, it reports more than 730 territories across 16 countries including the US, UK and Australia (FranchisePayback). FranNet lists an initial franchise fee of approximately $54,700 and a total investment of roughly $73,000 to $161,000; other directories cite narrower ranges around $94,000 to $139,000. Royalty is 8% of gross revenue plus a 2% ad fund. The model's low overhead is its attraction; the trade-off is that the brand has no physical presence in the community and revenue depends on the owner's own sales activity. See Success Tutoring vs Tutor Doctor.
Club Z! In-Home Tutoring
Club Z! was founded in 1995 in Tampa, Florida, and has franchised since 1998. It is another in-home and online model with no center. SharpSheets, citing the 2026 FDD, reports an initial franchise fee of $27,250 to $39,750 (older listings show $19,750) and a total initial investment of approximately $41,000 to $57,000, among the lowest in the category. Royalty is 6% to 8% of gross sales plus a 2% ad fund. Directories list roughly 340 to 350 units. Club Z! delivers K-12 tutoring in the home and online. It suits an owner with limited capital who is comfortable building a tutor network and selling to families directly, and who does not need a storefront to generate leads.
JEI Learning Center
JEI began in Seoul, South Korea, in 1977 and entered the US in 1992. It runs center-based programs in math, English and reading, with royalties charged per subject. Franzy, citing the 2024 FDD, lists an initial franchise fee of approximately $22,500 to $23,000 and a total investment of roughly $61,000 to $111,000. Royalties are charged per subject enrolled, around $23 to $33 per subject per month plus a small advertising royalty, according to directory summaries and JEI's own franchise FAQ. US unit counts are reported inconsistently, from about 48 to 54 in recent directories. JEI's per-subject structure resembles Kumon's but with a smaller US network, which can mean more territory availability and less brand recognition. It suits owners who like the self-learning format and want a lower investment than a full-service center.
Best Brains Learning Centers
Best Brains was founded in 2011 in Arlington Heights, Illinois, began franchising in 2013 and expanded to Canada in 2014. It offers two center formats: a Premium Learning Center and a lower-cost Teacher Learning Center. SharpSheets, citing the 2026 FDD, reports an initial franchise fee of $14,500 (20% off for qualified veterans) and a total initial investment of approximately $29,850 to $134,300, with the low end tied to the Teacher format. One source reports royalties of 14% plus a 0.6% advertising fee. PeerSense, citing the 2026 FDD, lists 164 locations. It suits an owner who wants a center-based model at a lower entry cost.
How to choose the best tutoring franchise for you
- Decide on center or no center. In-home models (Tutor Doctor, Club Z!) cost least to start but give you no storefront. Center models (Success Tutoring, Sylvan, Huntington, Mathnasium) cost more and build local visibility and a sellable asset.
- Decide on subject breadth. Math-only (Mathnasium) and method-based (Kumon, JEI) brands are clear but narrow. Multi-subject K-12 brands (Success Tutoring, Sylvan, Huntington, Best Brains) serve more of the catchment for longer.
- Model the revenue structure, not just the fee. Per-student royalties, percentage royalties and membership versus package pricing produce very different cash flows. Our potential earnings page explains how we model a membership center.
- Check the growth stage. A mature brand offers data and recognition; a brand entering your state offers territory choice and launch focus. Ask how many territories remain near you.
- Read Items 5, 6, 7, 19 and 20 of every FDD, and call franchisees listed in Item 20.
- Ask about launch support. The difference between opening with 60 members and opening with zero is the first year of your business. Our launch support page describes how we pre-sell a center.

What is the cheapest tutoring franchise in the USA?
By initial franchise fee, Kumon (approximately $2,000) is the lowest; by total initial investment, Club Z! (approximately $41,000 to $57,000, per the 2026 FDD via SharpSheets) and Best Brains' Teacher format (from approximately $29,850) are among the lowest. Low entry cost usually comes with either a no-center model or per-student royalties, so compare the full economics.
Which tutoring franchise is the most profitable?
Only brands that publish an Item 19 can be compared on disclosed revenue, and revenue is not profit. Sylvan disclosed average gross sales of $386,112 for FY2024 and Huntington's listed average is around $560,000 to $609,000, but both carry six-figure build-outs. Build your own model from Item 7, Item 6 and franchisee interviews.

Success Tutoring does not require it: owners manage the business and tutors are recruited and trained through the system. Requirements vary by brand, so confirm with each franchisor.
Is Success Tutoring available across the USA?
Success Tutoring launched in the US through Texas with a plan of 80 units across the state in five years. Current US territories are listed on available locations.

Federal law requires a minimum 14 calendar days between receiving the FDD and signing or paying. Most consultants recommend four to eight weeks for a thorough review including franchisee calls and legal advice.
