Washington State's economy runs on knowledge workers, and knowledge workers tend to care a great deal about their children's education. That makes the state a natural fit for a tutoring franchise. Success Tutoring's US launch was in Dallas, Texas; in Washington, territories are already drawn across north Seattle, and the rest of the state is open for franchise partners to help shape.

Washington has close to 8 million residents, US Census Bureau figures show. The Puget Sound region, from Everett through Seattle and Bellevue to Tacoma, holds most of them, but Spokane, the Tri-Cities and Clark County near Portland are growing quickly too.

Washington's education system

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) leads K–12 education in Washington. Schools teach to the Washington State K–12 Learning Standards, which in English and math are based on the Common Core. Key assessments include:

  • The Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) in English language arts and math, taken in grades 3 to 8 and grade 10.
  • The Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) in grades 5, 8 and 11.
  • Graduation pathways, which let high school students meet graduation requirements through options such as state test scores, dual credit, AP or IB results, or SAT and ACT scores.

Washington's districts have Highly Capable programs for advanced learners, and identification for these programs, often in the early elementary years, is a major milestone for many families. Seattle Public Schools, the Lake Washington School District, Bellevue School District, Northshore and Issaquah are among the districts parents compare most closely. The state also has a significant private school sector, including Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Seattle, and a small number of charter schools.

Why Washington families look for tutoring

Many Puget Sound parents work in technology, aerospace, healthcare and research, and a large share have moved from other states or countries. They want their children to keep pace with, or move ahead of, grade-level math, and they are used to investing in enrichment.

At the same time, SBA results have shown that many students across the state need support in math and reading. Highly Capable identification, middle school math placement and competition for admission to the University of Washington give families clear reasons to start regular tutoring early. Seattle's traffic and long workdays also make a nearby center with fixed weekly sessions appealing to busy parents.

Where the territories and opportunities are

The current Washington territories are in north Seattle, where established neighborhoods have a steady population of young families:

  • Ballard and Greenwood: popular family neighborhoods northwest of downtown with busy retail streets.
  • Queen Anne: a central neighborhood close to downtown with many professional households.
  • University District and Maple Leaf: near the University of Washington, a strong source of tutors and a community that values education.
  • Lake City: a growing area in northeast Seattle with newer apartment and townhouse development.
  • Shoreline: the suburb just north of the city line, served by the Shoreline School District.

The live map and table on this page show what is available right now. See our Seattle page for more on the city.

Beyond Seattle, the cities where we expect to draw territories with partners include:

  • The Eastside: Bellevue, Redmond, Sammamish, Kirkland and Issaquah, home to many technology employers and high-performing districts.
  • South King and Pierce counties: Renton, Kent, Auburn, Federal Way, Tacoma, Puyallup and the South Hill area.
  • Snohomish County: Everett, Mill Creek, Bothell, Lake Stevens and Marysville.
  • Clark County: Vancouver, Camas and Ridgefield, part of the Portland metro. See Portland.
  • Eastern Washington: Spokane, Spokane Valley and the Tri-Cities of Kennewick, Pasco and Richland.

Running a Success Tutoring center in Washington

Head office support for Washington partners can include finding a site with family traffic, from a neighborhood main street in Ballard to a suburban plaza in Sammamish, and guidance on the lease and fit-out. Help with hiring and training tutors is available (the University of Washington and other local colleges are possible sources), along with learning resources, a structured program and launch marketing. The FDD and franchise agreement set out the details.

Most partners are not teachers. Many come from technology, aerospace, healthcare and corporate careers and enjoy leading a team and building local relationships, with ongoing support from head office.

Frequently asked questions

Is Washington a franchise registration state?

Yes. Under the Washington Franchise Investment Protection Act, franchisors register with the Securities Division of the Department of Financial Institutions before they offer or sell franchises in Washington. Federally, the FTC Franchise Rule requires that you receive the Franchise Disclosure Document 14 or more days ahead of signing or paying. Seek independent legal advice.

Can I open on the Eastside or in Tacoma if there is no territory there yet?

Possibly. Outside north Seattle, territories are drawn with each partner using data on households, school-age children, schools and local competition. Tell us where you would like to open.

How does Highly Capable identification affect demand?

Highly Capable testing often happens in the early grades, and many parents want their children to have strong reading and math foundations beforehand. Regular weekly support is a common response.

What role does the SBA play for families?

SBA scores appear on student reports and school results, and grade 10 scores are one way to meet a graduation pathway. Parents use them to spot gaps in English and math early.
