Massachusetts regularly ranks at or near the top of the country on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), and its families expect a great deal from their schools. For a tutoring franchise in Massachusetts, that culture of high expectations is the foundation. Parents here do not wait for a child to fall behind before looking for help; they want steady progress and a head start on the next step.

Success Tutoring launched in the United States in Texas and is expanding. In Massachusetts, the first territories have been drawn in the suburbs northwest of Boston, where the state's tech and life-sciences employers sit alongside highly rated public schools.

Massachusetts schools and MCAS

Public education is overseen by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), and teaching follows the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Students take the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) in English language arts and math in grades 3 through 8 and in grade 10, with science tests in grades 5 and 8 and in high school.

MCAS remains the main measure of school and student performance, even after voters approved a 2024 ballot question that removed passing the grade 10 MCAS as a statewide graduation requirement. Districts now confirm students have met state standards through their coursework, and parents still use MCAS results to judge how their child and school are doing.

Competitive pathways

Massachusetts has several points where students compete for places:

  • Boston's exam schools, including Boston Latin School, Boston Latin Academy and the John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics and Science.
  • Independent day and boarding schools, many of which ask for the SSAT or ISEE.
  • Chapter 74 vocational-technical high schools, which often have more applicants than seats.
  • Advanced math tracks in suburban middle schools, which decide whether a student reaches calculus in high school.

Why Massachusetts families seek tutoring

Many households in the Boston suburbs are led by parents working in biotech, engineering, software, health care and higher education. They value learning and know how early math placement and strong writing skills shape later options. Families who have moved to the area from other states or countries for these jobs often want help keeping their children on pace with Massachusetts' demanding standards. And with long commutes, a structured program near home is easier than juggling individual tutors.

Success Tutoring is built for this. Families join as members and students attend weekly English and math sessions, kindergarten through grade 12, in a retail-style center.

Territories open northwest of Boston

The first Massachusetts territories cover a connected stretch of suburbs along Route 128 (I-95) and Route 3:

  • Arlington: a dense, family-heavy inner suburb next to Cambridge and Lexington, with a busy commercial strip along Massachusetts Avenue.
  • Woburn: a commercial hub where Route 128 meets I-93, with offices, retail and easy access for families in nearby Burlington, Winchester and Stoneham.
  • Bedford: a high-income town near Hanscom Air Force Base and the defense and tech employers around it, bordering Lexington and Concord.
  • Chelmsford: a family suburb on Route 3 near Lowell, with strong demand from parents working along the Route 3 tech corridor.
  • Tewksbury: a growing town between Lowell and Andover, close to I-495 and Route 38.

These sit in the middle of some of the most academically focused communities in the state, including Lexington, Winchester, Acton-Boxborough and Westford. The map and table on this page show each available territory in real time.

Beyond these, Success Tutoring is also looking for partners in other parts of the state, including Greater Boston's South Shore and MetroWest, Worcester and its suburbs such as Shrewsbury, and the Springfield area. For the city itself, see our Boston tutoring franchise page.

What Massachusetts partners receive

Head office can help a Massachusetts partner look for a storefront, useful in a tight commercial property market, and plan the fit-out. Tutor recruitment can draw on the region's large population of college students and graduates, with training in the Success Tutoring method. Learning resources and a structured program are part of the support, as is help planning marketing in Woburn, Chelmsford or Tewksbury around opening. The franchise agreement and FDD set out the support provided.

Owners do not need classroom experience. Success Tutoring partners have come from corporate, engineering and finance careers, the same fields that fill the offices along Route 128.

Frequently asked questions

Does removing the MCAS graduation requirement reduce demand for tutoring?

Not in our view. MCAS still measures student and school performance, and the main reasons Massachusetts parents use tutoring, such as math placement, exam school admission, college preparation and keeping up with demanding classes, are unchanged.

Why start in the suburbs northwest of Boston?

Arlington, Woburn, Bedford, Chelmsford and Tewksbury sit near major employers on Route 128 and Route 3 and next to some of the state's most academically focused towns, which makes them promising catchments for a learning center.

Is Massachusetts a franchise registration state?

Massachusetts has no franchise registration statute. The FTC Franchise Rule governs the sale: you must receive the Franchise Disclosure Document no less than 14 days before you sign or pay. The state's general consumer protection law, Chapter 93A, can also be relevant, so get advice from an independent attorney.

Can I open in a Massachusetts town that is not on the map yet?

Yes, it is possible. Territories are drawn with partners in areas without mapped territories. Talk to the team about the community you have in mind.
