Territory data last updated .

North Carolina has become one of the main destinations for families relocating within the United States. The Research Triangle and the Charlotte region in particular have drawn people from the Northeast, the Midwest and abroad for years, and new subdivisions, schools and shopping centers have followed. That is why Success Tutoring has already drawn territories in North Carolina, and why a tutoring franchise in North Carolina is one of the strongest opportunities outside Texas.

The brand launched in the US in Texas and is expanding, with available territories now open across Wake County and in eastern North Carolina.

How North Carolina measures learning

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), under the State Board of Education, sets the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. The testing calendar is built around two families of exams:

  • End-of-Grade (EOG) tests in reading and math in grades 3 to 8, plus science in grades 5 and 8.
  • End-of-Course (EOC) tests in high school in NC Math 1, NC Math 3, English II and Biology. EOC results count toward a student's final course grade.

Juniors also take the ACT in school, and schools receive A–F performance grades that are published every year. Parents moving to the Triangle often start their home search with those grades.

The state also offers competitive options that raise the stakes:

  • The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, a public residential and online high school with selective admission.
  • Magnet programs in Wake County and Charlotte-Mecklenburg, assigned partly by application.
  • Charter schools, which have grown quickly and often run lotteries.
  • Private schools, supported by the state's Opportunity Scholarship program, which expanded to all income levels in 2023.

Why North Carolina families use tutoring

Rapid growth puts real pressure on schools. The Wake County Public School System is the largest district in the state and has had to build schools quickly and reassign students as neighborhoods fill. Families who move in mid-year or from out of state often find the NC math sequence different from what they knew.

Other reasons families look for help:

  • NC Math 1 placement in middle school, which decides how far a student can go in high school math.
  • EOC exams that count toward grades, making high school math and English results directly visible on transcripts.
  • Two-career households working at the Triangle's technology, life sciences and university employers, who want a structured weekly routine.
  • International families, especially around Research Triangle Park, who want consistent English and math support.

Available territories in North Carolina

Most available territories are in Wake County:

  • Cary, Apex and Morrisville, three of the fastest-growing towns in the Triangle, with large numbers of young families and many families relocating from other states and countries.
  • Wake Forest and North Raleigh, where new subdivisions continue to spread north along US-1 and the I-540 loop.
  • Raleigh neighborhoods including North Hills, Five Points, Lake Lynn, Wilders Grove and Westover.

Further east, territories are available in East and West Greenville, home to East Carolina University and a growing medical sector, and in Elizabeth City in the northeast.

Charlotte, Durham, Chapel Hill, Greensboro, Winston-Salem and Wilmington have no territories mapped yet; those are drawn with partners. See the Raleigh page and the Charlotte page for more on each metro.

Running a center in North Carolina

Support for North Carolina partners can include site selection and leasing in retail centers families already visit, fit-out guidance, tutor recruitment and training, learning resources and a structured program, and launch and marketing support for a new center. The franchise agreement and FDD describe what is provided.

You do not need a teaching background. Many partners come from corporate, engineering, finance and small-business careers. NC State, UNC, Duke, ECU and the state's community colleges are possible places to recruit tutors.

Frequently asked questions

Is North Carolina a franchise registration state?

No. North Carolina does not require franchise registration, although it has a business opportunity law that franchisors may need to address. The Federal Trade Commission's Franchise Rule requires that you receive the Franchise Disclosure Document at least 14 days before signing or paying. Seek independent legal advice.

Why are most territories in Wake County?

Wake County combines fast population growth, high numbers of school-age children and strong interest in academic support. Territories elsewhere in the state are drawn with partners.

How do EOG and EOC tests affect demand?

EOG results guide placement decisions in elementary and middle school, and EOC scores count toward high school course grades. Both give families clear reasons to invest in English and math skills.

Can I open a center in Charlotte?

Charlotte has no territories mapped yet. If you live in the Charlotte region, contact us and we can draw territories with you using local data.
