Illinois has one of the largest school-age populations in the Midwest and a school system with some of the most competitive entry points in the country. From Chicago's selective enrollment high schools to the nationally known districts of the North Shore and the western suburbs, families here plan their children's education years in advance. A tutoring franchise in Illinois serves those families week in, week out.
Success Tutoring launched in the United States in Texas and is expanding. In Illinois, territories are already drawn in Chicago's south suburbs, and the rest of the state is open for partners to help shape.
How Illinois schools are measured
The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) sets the Illinois Learning Standards and runs the state's assessments:
- The Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) in English language arts and math in grades 3 to 8. ISBE introduced a redesigned, shorter IAR in 2024, with new reporting levels that parents are still getting used to.
- The Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) in grades 5 and 8 and in high school biology.
- The SAT in grade 11 and the PSAT 8/9 and PSAT 10 earlier in high school, which Illinois uses as its high school assessments.
The state publishes school-level results on the Illinois Report Card, and those ratings shape where families buy homes, particularly in the suburbs.
Illinois also has several selective pathways that create demand years ahead:
- Chicago Public Schools selective enrollment high schools, such as Walter Payton, Northside College Prep, Whitney Young, Jones and Lane Tech, where admission depends on grades and an entrance exam taken in grade 8.
- Academic centers and gifted programs in CPS for younger students.
- The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) in Aurora, a residential public high school for students gifted in math and science.
- Strong Catholic school networks across the Archdiocese of Chicago, along with independent schools.
Why Illinois families invest in tutoring
The pressure points are clear. Chicago families preparing for selective enrollment testing start in elementary school. Suburban families want children ready for honors and accelerated math, which often begins with placement decisions in grade 5 or 6. Every high school junior sits the SAT in school, which makes reading and math readiness a shared concern across the state.
Illinois is also one of the most diverse states in the Midwest, and many immigrant families in the suburbs want structured support in English and math for their children. With many two-income commuter households, a weekly membership at a center near home is a practical fit.
Where the opportunity is
Available territories today include Chicago Heights and Riverdale, in the southern part of Cook County near the I-57 and I-94 corridors. These are established communities with many working families and fewer tutoring options than the northern and western suburbs.
Beyond those, territories are drawn with partners. Areas where demand is strong:
- The western suburbs and DuPage County: Naperville, Aurora, Wheaton, Bolingbrook, Plainfield and Oswego, where Naperville's District 203 and Indian Prairie District 204 are major draws.
- The northwest suburbs: Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, Palatine, Hoffman Estates and Mount Prospect.
- The southwest suburbs: Orland Park, Tinley Park, Oak Lawn and the growing Will County communities around Joliet and New Lenox.
- The North Shore and inner suburbs: Evanston, Skokie, Des Plaines and Oak Park.
- Downstate cities: Champaign-Urbana, Bloomington-Normal, Peoria, Springfield and Rockford.
The Chicago page covers the city and its immediate suburbs in more detail.
Running a center in Illinois
The operating approach was developed over years of running membership-based centers in Australia. Support for Illinois partners can cover site selection and leasing, fit-out, tutor recruitment and training, learning resources and a structured program, and help planning marketing in the south suburbs or elsewhere ahead of and after opening. The Illinois-registered disclosure document and the franchise agreement detail that support.
You do not need a teaching background. You lead the business and the team, and trained tutors run sessions. Illinois's large university system, from UIUC to UIC, Northwestern and Loyola, is a useful source of tutor candidates.
Frequently asked questions
Is Illinois a franchise registration state?
Yes. Illinois requires franchisors to register under the Illinois Franchise Disclosure Act before offering franchises in the state. The federal FTC Franchise Rule also applies, so you receive the Franchise Disclosure Document at least 14 days before signing or paying. Seek independent legal advice before committing.
Does Success Tutoring help students prepare for Chicago selective enrollment exams?
Centers focus on core English and math skills from kindergarten to grade 12. Reading, writing and math are the areas selective enrollment tests and grade-based admissions look at.
Can I open a center in Naperville or the North Shore?
Territories there have not been drawn yet. They are created with partners using data on households, children and schools, so contact us with the area you have in mind.
Is downstate Illinois an option?
Yes. University towns and regional cities such as Champaign, Bloomington-Normal and Peoria have sizable family populations and fewer national tutoring brands.
