Few American metros take school as seriously as Greater Boston. Massachusetts students regularly post some of the strongest results in the country on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, and the families who live here expect that standard to continue. For anyone weighing a tutoring franchise in Boston, that expectation is the market: parents who want steady, structured help in English and math, starting well before high school.
Success Tutoring launched in the US in Texas and is now expanding, with territories already drawn in the northern and northwestern suburbs of Boston.
School in Massachusetts and the city
The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) sets the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and runs the MCAS (Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System). Students sit MCAS in English and math in grades 3 to 8 and in grade 10, with science in grades 5, 8 and high school.
MCAS changed in an important way recently. In November 2024, voters approved a ballot question that removed passing the grade 10 MCAS as a statewide graduation requirement. The tests are still given and results are still published school by school, and families still use them to compare districts. What changed is the pressure point: rather than one high-stakes exam, parents now focus more on grades, course placement and the steps that lead to competitive schools and colleges.
The city itself has some unusual pathways:
- Boston's three exam schools: Boston Latin School, Boston Latin Academy and the John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics and Science. Students enter in grade 7 or 9, and admission is based on a composite of grades and an admissions test, with seats allocated across socioeconomic tiers of neighborhoods. Competition for Boston Latin in particular is intense.
- Independent day schools, which typically ask applicants for the ISEE or SSAT.
- METCO, the long-running voluntary program that places Boston students in suburban districts.
- Charter schools, which enroll a notable share of Boston students.
What brings families to a tutoring center
Boston-area parents tend to be highly educated, and many work in health care, higher education, biotech and technology. They know what strong math foundations look like, and they notice quickly when a child is slipping. Demand clusters around a few moments:
- Grades 4 to 6, when families start preparing for exam school or private school entry.
- Middle school math, when placement into accelerated tracks decides what a student can take later in high school.
- Writing, since MCAS English tests and most private school admissions ask for written responses.
- Newcomer families, including many international researchers and professionals, who want help adjusting to a new system.
A membership model, with weekly sessions all year rather than short bursts before a test, matches how these families think about learning.
Territories north and west of the city
The territories currently available sit along Route 128 and the I-93 and I-95 corridors north of Boston:
- Arlington, a dense, family-oriented town next to Cambridge with highly regarded schools and steady demand from young families.
- Woburn, a city with good highway access, growing apartment and townhouse construction, and a mix of established and newer families.
- Bedford, home to Hanscom Air Force Base and a strong local school district.
- Tewksbury, a suburban town along I-495 and I-93 with many commuter families.
Inside Route 128, Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Newton, Brookline and Quincy have no territories drawn yet. Those are drawn with partners, so contact us if you have a specific area in mind. The map and table on this page update from the live territory map.
Running a center in Greater Boston
Retail space in Boston is expensive and competitive, so leasing and site selection help is worth having. Support for partners can include finding and negotiating a site, fit-out guidance, tutor recruitment and training, learning resources and a structured program, and launch and marketing support for a new center in towns like Woburn or Tewksbury. Greater Boston's colleges and universities are also a large source of potential tutors. The franchise agreement and FDD set out what support is provided.
You do not need teaching experience. Many partners come from corporate, engineering, finance and small-business backgrounds; read their franchise stories. See the Massachusetts page for the wider state picture.
Frequently asked questions
Does Massachusetts require franchise registration?
No. Massachusetts is not a franchise registration state. The Federal Trade Commission's Franchise Rule applies, so you must receive the Franchise Disclosure Document at least 14 days before signing or paying. Seek independent legal advice before committing.
Do families still care about MCAS now that it is no longer a graduation requirement?
Yes. MCAS results are still published for every school and district and still shape how parents compare towns. Demand has shifted toward ongoing skill building, course placement and exam school preparation rather than a single test.
Can I open a center in Boston proper or Cambridge?
Those areas have no territories drawn yet. Territories inside the city are created with partners, using local data on families and schools.
Will an expensive retail market make it hard to find a site?
It can. Success Tutoring offers leasing and site selection support intended to help you look for a location that suits the catchment.
