Cary is a large, prosperous town just west of Raleigh, wedged between Research Triangle Park and the state capital. It has around 175,000 residents, according to the US Census Bureau, which makes it one of the biggest towns in North Carolina and larger than many cities. It is also one of the most education-minded communities in the Southeast. For a tutoring franchise in Cary, that matters more than anything else: parents here compare schools, track math placement and plan for college from elementary school. Success Tutoring launched in the United States in Texas, and the Raleigh area, including Cary, is one of the first markets outside Texas with territories on the map.

Cary's economy is built on knowledge work. SAS Institute, the analytics software company, has its headquarters campus here, and Epic Games has its headquarters in Cary and is redeveloping the former Cary Towne Center mall site. Many residents work at RTP's tech, pharmaceutical and research employers, and Cary has one of the largest Indian-American communities in the region.

Wake County schools, Cary style

Most Cary students attend the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS), the largest district in North Carolina. A few things about WCPSS stand out for Cary families:

  • Calendar choices. Wake runs traditional-calendar, modified-calendar and year-round schools. Many Cary families attend year-round schools, where students rotate through tracks with breaks spread across the year. Those track-out weeks create demand for structured learning outside school.
  • Magnet and application programs. WCPSS offers magnet schools and early college programs across the county, with applications each year. Cary families weigh them against strong base schools.
  • Crowded, fast-growing campuses. Cary-area high schools such as Green Hope, Panther Creek, Green Level, Cary, Apex Friendship and Middle Creek are large, and WCPSS has opened new schools and adjusted assignments as the western suburbs grow.

Western Cary crosses into Chatham County, where students attend Chatham County Schools. Cary also has independent schools such as Cary Academy, a range of private and faith-based options, and several charter schools that draw applications from across the county.

Why Cary families invest in tutoring

  • Gifted identification and math placement. Parents of elementary students know that Wake's Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) identification and middle school math placement shape a child's path to advanced math in high school.
  • Year-round track-outs. Families on year-round calendars look for a reliable weekly routine that continues through the breaks.
  • High expectations from relocated professionals. Many parents have moved from other states or from India, China and elsewhere, and they want their children to excel against North Carolina standards and its End-of-Grade tests.
  • College competition. In large, high-performing high schools, class rank, AP and dual-enrollment courses and admission to UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State are on parents' minds early.

Cary, Apex and Westover territories

Success Tutoring's territories around Cary are:

  • Cary, covering the town's established family neighborhoods, from the older streets around downtown Cary and the new Downtown Cary Park to subdivisions such as Lochmere, MacGregor Downs and Preston.
  • Apex, the fast-growing town to the south-west, known as "the Peak of Good Living," where new subdivisions keep spreading towards New Hill and Holly Springs along NC-540.
  • Westover, in west Raleigh near NC State and the Cary border, with established neighborhoods close to the university.

Cary's retail is organized around big, well-planned centers. Crossroads Plaza at US-1 and I-40, Fenton, a mixed-use development off Cary Towne Boulevard, Waverly Place and Park West Village just across the line in Morrisville all draw families from across western Wake. Neighborhood centers along Kildaire Farm Road, High House Road, Davis Drive and Tryon Road sit close to elementary schools and are the natural home for a tutoring center. Western Cary's newer neighborhoods around Green Level and the NC-540 corridor have added thousands of families in recent years.

Your Cary center

A Success Tutoring partner in Cary runs a retail-style learning center where families join as members and attend weekly English and math sessions from kindergarten to grade 12. Head office support can extend to site selection, lease negotiation and fit-out, tutor recruitment and online training, learning resources, and help planning local marketing around Apex and Westover before and after opening. The franchise agreement and FDD lay out the support in detail.

You do not need a teaching background. Cary's many engineers, analysts and corporate professionals often bring the planning and leadership skills the role calls for, and NC State, Wake Tech and the Triangle's universities are good places to look for tutors. Ongoing support comes from the Success Tutoring team.

Frequently asked questions

How do Wake County's year-round schools affect a tutoring business?

Students on year-round calendars have several shorter breaks spread across the year instead of one long summer. Families often want a weekly program that keeps going through track-out periods, which suits a membership model.

Does a Cary territory include Chatham County families?

Western Cary extends into Chatham County, where students attend Chatham County Schools. Territories are drawn around households rather than county lines, so they can include families from both systems.

How are franchises regulated in North Carolina?

North Carolina does not have a franchise registration law, although franchisors may need to make a filing under the state's business opportunity rules. The FTC Franchise Rule requires the Franchise Disclosure Document at least 14 days before you sign or pay. Seek independent legal advice.

Is Success Tutoring open in North Carolina yet?

Success Tutoring launched in the United States in Texas and is expanding. The Cary territories on this page are among the first in North Carolina, so a Cary partner would be one of the brand's early partners in the state.
