Los Angeles County has more students than most US states, which makes it one of the biggest opportunities for any education business in the country. Success Tutoring launched in the United States in Texas and is looking for franchise partners to bring its membership-based K–12 English and math centers to Southern California. A tutoring franchise in Los Angeles would make you one of the first Success Tutoring partners in California, with territories drawn with you around the communities you know best.

Los Angeles County is home to close to ten million people, according to the US Census Bureau, the most of any county in the nation. It is also one of the most culturally diverse places on earth, with large Mexican American, Korean, Chinese, Filipino, Armenian, Vietnamese, Iranian and Indian communities, many of which place education at the center of family life.

California's system and LAUSD

The California Department of Education oversees public schools, which teach to the California Common Core State Standards. In 2023 the State Board of Education adopted a new California Mathematics Framework, which shapes how districts teach math and when students reach algebra. Many parents follow these changes closely.

State testing runs through CAASPP (the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress), including the Smarter Balanced tests in English language arts and math in grades 3 to 8 and grade 11. English learners also take the ELPAC each year until they are reclassified, a milestone many multilingual families care about.

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is the second-largest school district in the country, after New York City's. It runs a large magnet program with its own points-based application system, a Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program, dual-language schools and highly gifted magnets. Beyond LAUSD, LA County has dozens of other school districts, plus one of the largest charter sectors in the US and a dense network of Catholic and independent schools.

Why LA families invest in tutoring

  • The UC and CSU path. The University of California is test-blind, so admission rests heavily on grades, course rigor and completing the A–G course requirements. Families want strong grades in every math and English class from middle school onwards.
  • Math pathway decisions. Whether a student reaches Algebra 1 in grade 8 affects access to calculus later, and parents often look outside school to keep that door open.
  • Magnet and GATE placement. Gifted identification and magnet points push families to focus on academic results early.
  • Multilingual households. Many students are learning English while keeping a home language, and families want help with reading and writing in English.
  • Competitive suburbs. In districts such as Arcadia, San Marino, Temple City, Walnut Valley and Palos Verdes Peninsula, after-school learning is part of normal family life.

Where the opportunity is in Los Angeles

Success Tutoring has not yet drawn territories in Los Angeles. The communities it would look at with partners include:

  • The San Gabriel Valley: Arcadia, Alhambra, Monterey Park, Rosemead, Temple City, El Monte, West Covina and Hacienda Heights, with some of the strongest tutoring demand in the state.
  • The South Bay: Torrance, Redondo Beach, Gardena, Carson and Hawthorne.
  • Glendale, Burbank and Pasadena, with well-regarded districts and large Armenian and Asian American communities.
  • Long Beach and Lakewood, served by Long Beach Unified, along with Bellflower, Downey and Norwalk.
  • The Gateway Cities and Southeast LA: Whittier, Pico Rivera, Montebello, South Gate and Huntington Park, large family communities with fewer established tutoring options.
  • The Westside: Santa Monica, Culver City and West LA.

Running a Success Tutoring center in LA

Partners run a retail-style center, often in a neighborhood plaza or strip mall near schools, where students attend weekly as members. Support from Success Tutoring can include site selection, leasing and fit-out guidance, useful in a market with expensive and competitive retail space; tutor recruitment and training; learning resources and a structured program; and launch and marketing support for a new center in the San Gabriel Valley, the South Bay or elsewhere. The franchise agreement and DFPI-registered disclosure document describe that support, which continues from head office after opening.

You do not need a teaching background. With UCLA, USC, Cal State LA, Cal State Long Beach and many other campuses nearby, Los Angeles has a very large pool of potential tutors.

Frequently asked questions

Is California a franchise registration state?

Yes. Under the California Franchise Investment Law, franchisors must register with the Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) before offering or selling franchises in California, in addition to giving you the Franchise Disclosure Document at least 14 days before you sign or pay under the FTC Franchise Rule. Seek independent legal advice.

Does the UC test-blind policy reduce demand for tutoring?

It shifts demand rather than reducing it. With no SAT or ACT in UC admissions, grades and course rigor carry even more weight, so families want consistent support throughout the school year.

Which parts of Los Angeles suit a tutoring center?

Areas with many school-age children, strong family focus on education and good retail access tend to work well, such as the San Gabriel Valley, the South Bay and Glendale. Territories are drawn with you using local census data.

Can a center serve families who speak languages other than English?

Yes. Many Success Tutoring families are multilingual, and English reading and writing are a core part of the program. Hiring tutors who reflect the local community can help too.
