Philadelphia families have a lot of school decisions to make. Within the city, the most sought-after public high schools admit students on academic criteria. Just outside it, the Main Line, Bucks County and South Jersey suburbs compete on results. And the region has one of the oldest and largest Catholic school systems in the country. All of that adds up to strong demand for a tutoring franchise in Philadelphia.

Success Tutoring launched its American network in Texas and is now expanding towards the East Coast. Greater Philadelphia has no mapped territories at present, so the first partners here can help decide whether the city, the Pennsylvania suburbs or South Jersey comes first.

Schools and testing in Philadelphia

The Pennsylvania Department of Education oversees public schools, which teach to the Pennsylvania Core Standards in English language arts and math. State testing includes:

  • PSSA (Pennsylvania System of School Assessment) in English language arts and math for grades 3 to 8, and science in grades 4 and 8.
  • Keystone Exams at the end of Algebra I, Literature and Biology, usually taken in high school, which feed into school accountability and are one pathway to graduation.

The School District of Philadelphia is the largest district in Pennsylvania. Alongside neighborhood schools, it runs criteria-based (special admission) high schools such as Central High School, Julia R. Masterman, Carver High School of Engineering and Science, Palumbo Academy and Science Leadership Academy. Applications are made through a centralized system, and students must meet requirements based on grades, attendance and, in some cases, other criteria before entering a lottery or selection process. Philadelphia also has many charter schools.

Catholic education is a major part of life in the region through the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and independent Catholic schools, and there is a strong independent sector including Quaker schools such as Germantown Friends and William Penn Charter.

Across the river in South Jersey, Camden and Cherry Hill follow the New Jersey Department of Education system and the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA).

Why Philadelphia families seek tutoring

Meeting the bar for special admission

Because eligibility for criteria-based high schools depends on seventh-grade grades and attendance, families who want Masterman, Central or Carver need consistent progress through middle school. Masterman also admits students from grade 5, so the planning starts early.

Catholic and independent school transitions

Many students move between parish schools, Catholic high schools, independent schools and public schools. Entrance testing for Catholic high schools and independent schools gives families a clear reason to strengthen reading and math.

Suburban expectations

In districts such as Lower Merion, Radnor, Central Bucks, Council Rock, Downingtown, Haverford Township and Cherry Hill, parents expect advanced math placement, AP courses and strong college outcomes.

Early reading

With growing attention to the science of reading across Pennsylvania, parents of younger children want reliable help with phonics and comprehension.

Where the opportunity is

With the map still open, these are areas with high concentrations of families:

  • Northeast Philadelphia: Somerton, Bustleton, Fox Chase and Rhawnhurst, large family neighborhoods with busy shopping corridors.
  • Northwest Philadelphia: Chestnut Hill, Mount Airy and Roxborough.
  • The Main Line and Delaware County: Ardmore, Bryn Mawr, Wynnewood, Havertown, Springfield and Media.
  • Montgomery County: Abington, Cheltenham, Plymouth Meeting and King of Prussia.
  • Lower Bucks County: Bensalem, Langhorne and Newtown.
  • South Jersey: Cherry Hill, Voorhees, Haddonfield, Moorestown and Mount Laurel, with strong schools and a short drive into the city.

A territory belongs exclusively to one partner and is drawn from census data on households, children aged 5 to 17 and schools, as well as the tutoring businesses already operating.

The partner's role in Philadelphia

You would run a storefront learning center on a neighborhood commercial corridor or in a suburban shopping center, where member students attend weekly sessions in reading, writing and math from kindergarten to grade 12. Support may include site selection and leasing, the build-out, tutor hiring and training, learning resources and a structured program, and launch marketing for a new center. The franchise agreement and FDD set out the support provided.

You do not need to be a former teacher. The job is leading a team, running a well-organized business and becoming a familiar face to local parents and schools, with ongoing support from head office.

Frequently asked questions

Do Pennsylvania or New Jersey require franchise registration?

Neither Pennsylvania nor New Jersey requires franchise registration, though New Jersey does have a franchise relationship law. In both states the federal FTC Franchise Rule means you must receive the Franchise Disclosure Document at least 14 days before signing or paying. Seek independent legal advice before committing.

Could I open in South Jersey rather than Philadelphia?

Yes. This page covers the wider Philadelphia area, including Camden County suburbs such as Cherry Hill and Voorhees.

How does tutoring help with special admission high schools?

Eligibility depends on grades and attendance in middle school. Weekly sessions work on reading, writing and math, though no particular grade or admission outcome can be promised.

Are Keystone Exams still required to graduate in Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania offers several pathways to show readiness for graduation, and Keystone results are one of them. Rules can change, so check current Pennsylvania Department of Education guidance.
