Success Tutoring vs Spirit of Math: Which Tutoring Franchise Fits You?
A consultant's comparison of Success Tutoring and Spirit of Math Schools: who each model serves, what franchise partners receive, how investment is structured and where each brand operates.

By Michael Black
Founder & Global CEO

Spirit of Math Schools is one of Canada's longest-running after-school maths brands, built around a classroom programme for high-performing students. Success Tutoring is an Australian-founded K-12 tutoring franchise in English and Maths that runs membership-based learning centres and is launching in Canada in 2026. If you are weighing a tutoring franchise in Canada or another market where both brands are active, the two represent genuinely different theories of what a centre should be and who it should serve. This guide sets them side by side so you can decide which model matches your skills, your capital and your local market.
At a glance
- Founded: Spirit of Math traces its roots to after-school classes in Toronto and has been in business since 1992, according to its Franchise Canada listing. Success Tutoring was founded in Sydney in 2017 by Michael Black and has franchised since around 2020.
- Subjects: Spirit of Math is maths only. Success Tutoring covers English and Mathematics from kindergarten to Year 12.
- Target student: Spirit of Math describes itself as a programme for high-performing students; registration involves an interview with the campus, and one campus lists a minimum B+ average. Success Tutoring enrols students of all ability levels.
- Format: Spirit of Math runs weekly classroom lessons in cohorts. Success Tutoring runs retail-style learning centres on a membership model.
- Footprint: Spirit of Math reported 27 campuses (26 physical and one virtual) serving just under 12,000 students in an August 2025 Retail Insider interview; other company sources cite more than 40 campuses across North America. Success Tutoring has reported 35 Australian centres (2023) with territories sold in more than 100 locations, plus announced launches in New Zealand, the United States, Singapore, Canada, the UK and India.
- Teacher requirement: Success Tutoring does not require franchise partners to be teachers. Confirm Spirit of Math's owner requirements with the franchisor.
How each tutoring franchise model works
Spirit of Math began as a system of after-school schools for strong maths students, as CEO Kim Langen explained to Retail Insider in 2025, and the model still reflects that origin. Students attend one class per week with the same group for the school year. The company's programme overview describes a 1.5-hour weekly class for younger grades and a 2-hour class for older students, with teacher-led instruction, timed drills, problem-solving work, homework and tests. It is enrichment and acceleration rather than remediation, and the brand is open about that: it positions itself as replacing traditional tutoring with structured, collaborative classes.
Success Tutoring is built the other way around. The core customer is a family that wants consistent, personalised support in English and Maths, whether the child is behind, on track or aiming higher. Families join as members rather than booking casual sessions, which gives the centre predictable recurring revenue and lets tutors plan progression over months rather than one session at a time. Centres are physical, retail-style spaces that are designed to be visible in the community, and partners receive a turnkey system, which the company calls the Success Kit, covering curriculum, operations, marketing and training.
The practical difference for an owner is the shape of demand. A maths-enrichment classroom draws from the top slice of students in a catchment and fills by cohort. A K-12 English and Maths membership centre draws from the whole school population and fills continuously throughout the year.
What students get
Spirit of Math students get a demanding, cohort-based programme with a clear sequence from Grade 1 to Grade 11 (its campuses list Grades 1 to 11, with some materials describing K to 11). The emphasis on drills, problem solving and group work suits children who already enjoy maths and want to be stretched. Because entry involves an interview, the room is typically made up of motivated, higher-achieving students, which many parents of gifted children actively want.
Success Tutoring students get K-12 English and Maths support aligned to the local curriculum, delivered by tutors who are recruited and trained through the franchise system. The membership model means a student can be assessed, placed and then supported continuously, with the plan adjusted as they progress. Because the model is not selective, a centre can serve a child who needs to rebuild confidence in reading alongside a sibling preparing for senior exams. You can read about the curriculum approach on our learning resources page.
Neither approach is better in the abstract. One narrows the audience to go deep in a single subject; the other widens the audience across two core subjects and every ability level.
What franchise partners get
Spirit of Math describes comprehensive franchisee support covering training, operations, marketing and technology on its franchising page, and the Canadian Franchise Association (CFA) profiles long-tenured franchisees such as Salima and Wahid Mussaji, who opened their first campus in Mississauga about two decades ago and later added Oakville. Longevity like that is a good sign for any tutoring franchise. The brand awarded its first franchise in the Toronto area around 2005, according to a National Post column from that year, so it has had two decades to refine its franchisee playbook.
Success Tutoring's partner package is built around getting a centre to a strong opening and then keeping it full:
- Launch and pre-marketing support: centres have opened with 45, 55, 60 and 70 or more members signed before the doors opened, according to Success Tutoring news posts.
- Leasing and fit-out support for a retail-style site.
- Tutor recruitment and tutor training through an online franchise training platform.
- Ongoing marketing support under a national and global brand.
- A flat franchising structure, meaning partners deal directly with head office leadership rather than through layers of regional management.
Success Tutoring partners come from corporate, engineering, finance and small-business backgrounds, and the company does not require teaching qualifications. Spirit of Math describes its classes as teacher-led; ask the franchisor what it expects of campus owners.
Investment and fees
Spirit of Math does not publish its fee schedule on its website. A third-party franchise directory, The Franchise Mall, lists an initial franchise fee of approximately $39,000 CAD and states that overall investment starts from that figure and varies by location. Treat that as an unverified directory figure and request the brand's franchise disclosure document, which Canadian provincial law requires franchisors in Ontario and several other provinces to provide at least 14 days before you sign or pay.
Success Tutoring does not publish fees, royalties or set-up costs in articles like this one. The full breakdown, including what the initial investment covers and how ongoing fees work, is on our investment schedule page, and the modelling behind centre performance is explained on potential earnings. We prefer to walk prospective partners through the numbers directly so they are seen in context.
When comparing the two, look beyond headline fees. A classroom programme that runs a limited number of weekly cohorts has a different cost base from a retail centre that is open across the week, and the revenue models differ accordingly.
Markets and footprint
Spirit of Math is a Canadian brand first. Its 2025 campus count is concentrated in the Greater Toronto Area with campuses in Ottawa, Alberta, Winnipeg and British Columbia, according to Retail Insider, and it has reported locations in the United States (its first Alabama campus opened in Vestavia Hills, where classes run from a church venue) and in Pakistan. CEO Kim Langen told Retail Insider in 2025 that the company is targeting global growth through franchising.
Success Tutoring's home market is Australia, where it has reported 35 centres in 2023 with a launch schedule for 80 more (Franchise Executives) and territories sold in more than 100 locations (Inside Small Business). Internationally, it has announced New Zealand as its first overseas market with 25 sites planned over four years, a Texas launch with an ambition of 80 units across the state in five years, and a Canadian launch in 2026 with a goal of 120 units by 2029, led from Vancouver with territories available in Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary and Montreal, according to Franchise Executives. Singapore, the UK and India have also been announced. See available locations for current territories.
In Canada specifically, this means a prospective partner is choosing between an established local maths brand with a 30-year track record and a newer, fast-growing international brand entering with a national launch plan and open territories in major cities.
Who each option suits
Spirit of Math may suit you if:
- You want a maths-only, enrichment-focused business and your catchment has a strong population of high-achieving students.
- You are comfortable with a cohort model where enrolment is concentrated around the school year.
- You value a long Canadian track record over early-mover territory choice.
Success Tutoring may suit you if:
- You want a two-subject, K-12 model that can serve every family in the catchment, not only the top performers.
- You prefer a membership model with recurring revenue and a centre that is visible on the high street.
- You want launch pre-marketing so the centre opens with members already signed, and a direct line to head office leadership.
- You are entering Canada, the US, New Zealand or another launch market and want first choice of territory.

Frequently asked questions
Is Spirit of Math a franchise?
Yes. The company awarded its first franchise in the Toronto area around 2005, according to a National Post column published that year, and it actively recruits franchisees through its website and the Canadian Franchise Association.
Does Spirit of Math accept all students?
Public materials describe it as a programme for high-performing students. Registration involves a free interview with the campus, and at least one campus lists a minimum B+ average. This selectivity is central to the model rather than a drawback.
Do I need a teaching background to own either tutoring franchise?
Success Tutoring does not require one. Franchise partners typically come from corporate, finance, engineering and small-business backgrounds, and the system trains both the owner and the tutors. Spirit of Math's classes are teacher-led; confirm its owner requirements directly with the franchisor.
Is Success Tutoring open in Canada yet?
Success Tutoring announced a 2026 Canadian launch, headquartered in Vancouver and led by Canadian CEO Gopal Venkata, with a goal of 120 units by 2029 (Franchise Executives). Territory availability is listed on our available locations page.
Which is the lower-cost option?
Neither brand publishes a complete cost breakdown in public articles. Request Spirit of Math's disclosure document and review our investment schedule, then compare the full picture, including fit-out, working capital and ongoing fees, rather than the initial fee alone.
