Metro Vancouver is one of the strongest markets in Canada for after-school learning, and one of the anchors of Success Tutoring's 2026 Canadian launch. The region had about 2.6 million residents at the 2021 census, according to Statistics Canada, spread across Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, the North Shore and the cities of the Fraser Valley. A tutoring franchise in Vancouver taps into families who already treat tutoring as a normal part of school life.
The territories on this page fall within 20 km of central Vancouver. They cover the City of Vancouver's neighbourhoods and reach into Burnaby, Richmond, New Westminster, North and West Vancouver, Coquitlam and North Delta.
BC's curriculum and assessments
Schools in British Columbia follow the provincial curriculum set by the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care. The redesigned K–12 curriculum, introduced over the past decade, puts more weight on core competencies, inquiry and applied learning, and less on memorization. Many parents, particularly those educated elsewhere, find it hard to tell how their child is really doing.
The province measures progress with a small set of assessments:
- The Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) in Grades 4 and 7, covering reading, writing and numeracy.
- The Graduation Numeracy Assessment and Graduation Literacy Assessment in Grade 10, and a second Graduation Literacy Assessment in Grade 12. All three are graduation requirements.
University admission in BC is based on Grade 11 and 12 course marks, and competition for programs at UBC and Simon Fraser University is intense. That keeps families focused on math and English well before senior high school.
Each city in the region has its own school district, including the Vancouver School Board, Burnaby, Richmond, North Vancouver and Coquitlam. The francophone Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique runs French-language schools province-wide. BC also partially funds many independent schools, so a larger share of Vancouver students attend private and faith-based schools than in most Canadian cities. Some of those schools have competitive entrance exams.
Why Vancouver families invest in tutoring
Metro Vancouver is home to large Chinese, South Asian, Filipino, Korean and Iranian communities, among many others, and a large share of residents were born outside Canada. In many of these families, regular after-school tutoring in math and English is simply expected. Parents want structure, measurable progress and a program that sits alongside the BC curriculum rather than replacing it.
The high cost of housing shapes family life too. Most households have two working parents, and many children spend after-school hours in programs while their parents commute. A local centre with consistent weekly sessions is a practical answer.
Language matters as well. Many Vancouver students are learning English as an additional language, and parents want support that builds reading and writing alongside math.
Where the territories are in Metro Vancouver
The available territories on the map cover areas with very different profiles:
- Vancouver's east and south, including Killarney, Sunset, Renfrew-Collingwood, Hastings-Sunrise, Cedar Cottage and Riley Park, with large family populations.
- Vancouver's west side, including Kerrisdale and West Point Grey, home to established families and close to UBC.
- Burnaby, around Metrotown, Brentwood and Lougheed, where SkyTrain-oriented towers are bringing thousands of new households.
- Richmond, including Blundell and the city centre, with a large Chinese-Canadian community and a strong tutoring culture.
- The North Shore, including Lynn Valley, North Vancouver and West Vancouver, where families value education highly.
- New Westminster, Coquitlam (Austin Heights) and North Delta, growing suburbs on the eastern and southern edges of the radius.
Each Success Tutoring territory is exclusive to one partner and built around a catchment of households, school-age children and schools.
Partnering with Success Tutoring in Metro Vancouver
Vancouver partners can get support on the parts of opening a business that are hardest to do alone. That may include scouting and leasing a retail unit near schools and transit, planning the fit-out, and recruiting tutors and training them through an online platform. Learning resources and a structured program are provided, and head office can help plan local marketing in the lead-up to opening and afterwards. What the support includes is set out in the franchise agreement and disclosure documents.
No teaching certificate is needed, and in a region full of professionals from overseas and elsewhere in Canada, many potential partners bring business or technical careers that fit the role well. With UBC, SFU, BCIT and Langara College in the region, there is a large pool for tutor recruitment.
Frequently asked questions
Are there already many tutoring centres in Vancouver?
Yes, particularly in Richmond and Burnaby, which shows how much families here spend on tutoring. Success Tutoring territories are assessed using data on households, children, schools and local competition, and the membership model focuses on long-term weekly attendance.
How does BC's franchise law protect me?
British Columbia's Franchises Act came into force in 2017. Like the other provincial disclosure laws, it requires a franchisor to deliver a disclosure document at least 14 days before you sign or pay, and gives you remedies if it does not. Seek independent legal advice from a BC franchise lawyer.
Does Success Tutoring follow the BC curriculum?
Each student's sessions are set around their current level and goals. What the program covers and how it is delivered is described in the franchise disclosure documents, so ask the franchise team to walk you through it.
Can I open a centre outside the City of Vancouver?
Yes. This page includes territories in Burnaby, Richmond, the North Shore and nearby cities, and our Surrey page covers the Fraser Valley side of the region.
