Durham Region runs east from Pickering to the Kawartha Lakes, and its lakeshore cities have become one of the main places GTA families go when they need more house for their money. The region had close to 700,000 residents at the 2021 census, according to Statistics Canada, and it keeps growing. A tutoring franchise in Durham Region taps into that wave: young families in new subdivisions in north Whitby, north Oshawa and Courtice, many of whom grew up with tutoring as a normal part of school in Toronto, Scarborough or Markham.
Success Tutoring launches in Canada in 2026. This page's 12 km radius centres on the Whitby and Oshawa border and reaches east into Courtice in Clarington.
Durham's school boards
Most Durham students attend the Durham District School Board (DDSB) or the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB). Conseil scolaire Viamonde and the Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir run French-language schools, and the region has a modest private school sector. Both English boards follow the Ontario curriculum and EQAO assessments in Grades 3, 6 and 9, and students must pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test or the equivalent course to graduate.
A few features shape choices:
- French Immersion starts in Grade 1 at both boards. DDSB offers it at a set of elementary and secondary schools, some dual-track and some immersion-only, and DCDSB has French Immersion centres including St. Leo Catholic School in Brooklin. Many immersion parents do not speak French and want extra help with English literacy and math.
- New schools in new neighbourhoods. Fast growth in Brooklin, north Oshawa and Courtice means new elementary schools opening and others relying on portables until more are built.
- Post-secondary on the doorstep. Ontario Tech University and Durham College share a campus in north Oshawa, and Trent University has a Durham campus. Ontario Tech's engineering, computer science and health science programs give local students a clear target.
Why Durham families use tutoring
Many Durham parents commute to Toronto on the 401, the 407 or the Lakeshore East GO line, which makes for long days and very little time to help with homework. A nearby centre with a fixed weekly schedule is a practical solution.
Durham is also more diverse than it was a generation ago. South Asian, Caribbean, Filipino, African and Middle Eastern families have moved in from Toronto and Scarborough, and many bring strong expectations for education and familiarity with tutoring. Long-established local families, many tied to Oshawa's auto industry, increasingly want their children to have the marks for university and college programs that lead to skilled careers.
The changes to Ontario's elementary math curriculum, the de-streamed Grade 9 math course and the weight of Grade 11 and 12 marks for university admission apply here as everywhere in Ontario.
Where the territories are
The territories within this radius are Whitby, Whitby North, Oshawa, Oshawa North and Courtice:
- Whitby North, including Brooklin, where large new subdivisions have been built since the Highway 407 East extension opened, and more are planned.
- Whitby, covering the established neighbourhoods south of Taunton Road and around the Whitby GO station, including Williamsburg and Pringle Creek.
- Oshawa North, around the Ontario Tech and Durham College campus and the newer neighbourhoods along Taunton and Winchester Roads, such as Windfields and Kedron.
- Oshawa, covering the city's central and southern neighbourhoods, where older homes are attracting first-time buyers with young children.
- Courtice, in the Municipality of Clarington, one of the fastest-growing communities on the eastern edge of the GTA.
Transit is moving east too. Metrolinx has planned an extension of Lakeshore East GO rail service beyond Oshawa to Bowmanville, with new stations proposed, including one in Courtice. Each Success Tutoring territory is exclusive and drawn around households, children aged 5 to 17 and schools.
Owning a Success Tutoring centre in Durham
Durham's family shopping is concentrated in plazas along Taunton Road, Brock Street, Simcoe Street and Winchester Road, and around the newer retail nodes in Brooklin and Courtice. Success Tutoring's support can extend to finding and leasing a site, the fit-out, hiring and training tutors and launch marketing for a new centre, together with learning resources and a structured program. Partners also have support from head office once the centre is running. The franchise agreement and disclosure documents spell out what is provided.
You do not need to be a teacher. Partners come from engineering, finance, corporate and small-business careers, and Ontario Tech, Durham College and Trent Durham students are a ready source of tutors.
