Scarborough was its own city until amalgamation in 1998, and many residents still describe it that way. It covers the whole eastern end of Toronto, from the Bluffs on Lake Ontario to Steeles Avenue, and it is home to more families with school-age children than many mid-sized Canadian cities. A tutoring franchise in Scarborough is built on that depth: neighbourhood after neighbourhood of detached homes, townhouses and apartment towers, almost all of them within walking distance of a school.

Success Tutoring launches in Canada in 2026, and Scarborough has one of the densest clusters of territories on the Toronto map.

Schools in Scarborough

Scarborough's public schools belong to the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), with French-language schools run by Conseil scolaire Viamonde and the Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir. Students follow the Ontario curriculum and write the EQAO assessments in Grades 3, 6 and 9 and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test in Grade 10.

The east end has its own well-known pathways:

  • Strong collegiate institutes such as Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate and Agincourt Collegiate, which have long reputations for math and science and attract families to the north end of the borough.
  • Specialized programs, including the arts at Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts and gifted classes for students identified through TDSB's special education process.
  • French Immersion, offered by both TDSB and TCDSB at schools across the borough and filled through an application process when demand outstrips space.
  • University of Toronto Scarborough and Centennial College, both in the borough, which make university feel close for many families and supply a ready pool of potential tutors.

Why Scarborough families invest in tutoring

Scarborough is one of the most diverse places in Canada. It has one of the largest Tamil communities outside South Asia, long-established Chinese-Canadian neighbourhoods in Agincourt and Milliken, and large Filipino, South Asian, Caribbean, Afghan and West African communities. Many parents arrived as adults, often with professional qualifications from another country, and they place a very high value on their children doing well in school.

Two things come up again and again. Parents educated in another system want help understanding how Ontario teaches math, especially since the 2020 curriculum and de-streamed Grade 9 changed what homework looks like. And with Grade 11 and 12 marks deciding university admission, families want their children's skills secure well before high school. Weekly English and math sessions at a centre in the local plaza meet both needs.

Affordability matters too. Scarborough families are careful with money, which favours a clear, regular membership over ad hoc lessons, and favours centres close to home over long drives.

Where the territories are

The territories in this radius include Agincourt, Scarborough - Agincourt, Morningside, Morningside Park, Highland Creek, Guildwood, Kennedy, Elson, Comstock, Canongate, Pine Hills and Brookbanks Park, along with a general Scarborough catchment. They fall into a few groups:

  • North Scarborough, including Agincourt and the Canongate and Brookbanks Park areas, with dense family housing between Sheppard and Steeles.
  • Central Scarborough, around Kennedy, Comstock and Pine Hills, where the Line 2 subway extension is under construction toward Scarborough Centre and Sheppard and McCowan. The extension replaces the Scarborough RT, which closed in 2023, and is expected to bring new housing around its stations.
  • East Scarborough, including Morningside, Morningside Park, Highland Creek and the neighbourhoods around U of T Scarborough.
  • The south and lakeshore, including Guildwood and Elson, quieter areas of established family homes.

Each territory is exclusive and drawn around a catchment of households, children aged 5 to 17 and schools, so a partner in Agincourt and a partner in Guildwood serve different families.

What a Scarborough partner gets

Scarborough's commercial life runs through plazas: strip malls on Sheppard, Finch, Lawrence and Kingston Road where families already shop. Success Tutoring can help partners find and lease a unit in a suitable one, plan the fit-out, recruit and train tutors and prepare local marketing for the opening. Partners also have learning resources and a structured program, plus ongoing support from the Success Tutoring team. Check the franchise agreement and disclosure documents for the full scope of that support.

No teaching background is required. Many partners come from engineering, finance, corporate and small-business careers, and in a community with as many internationally trained professionals as Scarborough, that profile is common.

Frequently asked questions

Is Scarborough already full of tutoring centres?

Plenty of tutoring businesses operate here, which reflects how much families spend on education. Success Tutoring territories are assessed using data on households, children and schools, and the membership model is built around long-term weekly attendance rather than one-off test prep.

How will the Scarborough subway extension affect a centre?

The extension is expected to make Scarborough Centre and the Sheppard and McCowan area more accessible and to encourage new housing nearby. Partners in those catchments may benefit from that growth over time, but a good centre depends first on being close to where families live and shop.

Does Ontario regulate franchise sales?

Yes. Under the Arthur Wishart Act (Franchise Disclosure), 2000, you must receive a disclosure document at least 14 days before signing or paying, and you have rescission rights if it is missing. Seek independent legal advice before you sign.
