Success Tutoring vs JEI Learning Center: Which Tutoring Franchise Should You Buy?
JEI Learning Center brings a Korean self-learning, workbook-based method to North America. Success Tutoring runs membership-based K-12 English and math centers. A franchise buyer's comparison of the two models.

By Michael Black
Founder & Global CEO

JEI Learning Center and Success Tutoring are both international tutoring franchise brands that arrived in North America from overseas. JEI was founded in Seoul, South Korea, in 1977 and has operated in the United States since 1992. Success Tutoring was founded in Sydney, Australia, in 2017 and launched in Texas, with Canada to follow in 2026.
Beyond that shared "imported brand" story, the two models are quite different. JEI is a self-learning system built around diagnostic testing and programmed workbooks, with a low initial investment and a per-student royalty. Success Tutoring is a membership-based, tutor-led learning center with a retail footprint and pre-launch marketing. This guide compares them for a prospective franchise buyer, with every JEI figure attributed to its public source.
At a glance
- JEI Learning Center: founded in 1977 in Seoul, South Korea; brought to the US in 1992 by founder Sung Hoon Park, who established JEI Learning Centers, LLC. Math and English (reading and writing) for roughly kindergarten to grade 9, delivered through a diagnostic test and individualized workbooks with weekly center visits and daily homework.
- Success Tutoring: founded in Sydney in 2017 by Michael Black; franchising since around 2020. K-12 English and math in retail-style learning centers, sold as a family membership. US launch in Dallas, Texas, with a plan of 80 units across Texas in five years; Canada launch planned for 2026.
- Footprint: JEI's own press material describes more than 500 locations worldwide. Directories drawing on its 2024 and 2026 FDDs list around 46 to 54 US locations. Success Tutoring reported 35 Australian centers in 2023 with 80 more scheduled, and territories sold in more than 100 Australian locations.
- Fees: JEI's initial franchise fee is reported at US$22,500, with a total investment of roughly US$61,000 to US$115,000 (2024 and 2026 FDD-based directory summaries). Success Tutoring's figures are on its investment schedule page.
Two tutoring franchise business models
JEI runs what it calls the JEI Self-Learning Method. According to JEI's own websites, a student starts with the JEI Diagnostic Test, the results are compiled into an Individual Progress Prescription Report, and the center recommends a program. The student then works through programmed workbooks designed in small steps with a spiral structure, aligned to Common Core State Standards. A 2023 Business View Magazine profile described a teacher working with around five students at a time once a week, with students continuing the workbooks at home.
The model is close to Kumon's in spirit, and if you are considering JEI you should also read our Success Tutoring vs Kumon guide. The revenue model is a monthly tuition per subject, and the franchisor charges a per-subject royalty rather than a percentage of sales.
Success Tutoring is tutor-led rather than workbook-led. Students attend a retail-style center where tutors deliver K-12 English and math sessions. Families join as members, which gives the center recurring revenue and a stable weekly schedule. Centers have opened with 45, 55, 60 and 70+ members signed before opening, according to Success Tutoring news posts, because the franchisor runs a pre-launch marketing campaign.
The practical difference for an owner: a self-learning center is lean on instruction hours and heavy on materials and assessment systems. A tutor-led center has higher payroll but a broader service that can address a wider range of student needs, from foundational literacy to Year 12 math.
What students get
JEI students get a highly structured, incremental path through math, reading and writing. The strengths of the method are consistency, measurable progress and the habit of daily independent work. JEI's franchise page cites K to 9th grade students; Wikipedia describes the brand as serving ages four to fourteen. Franchise listings describe the core offer as math and English enrichment. For a family that wants discipline and mastery of fundamentals, this is a well-proven approach with nearly five decades behind it.
Success Tutoring students get live tutoring in English and math across the full K-12 range, including senior high school, in a center environment designed to be welcoming. The brand's values, Motivate, Uplift, Inspire, and its mascot, Lucky the Kangaroo, are part of the student experience, especially for younger members. Success Tutoring also published the Australian National Learning Insights Report 2024, which feeds into the learning resources all centers use.
The short version: JEI is strongest for elementary and middle school fundamentals through independent work. Success Tutoring covers the full K-12 span with tutors in the room.
What franchise partners get
JEI's franchise page outlines a six-step process from initial interview to franchise agreement and a New Franchise Training program, and its marketing emphasizes low royalties. Directory listings describe a royalty of roughly US$23 to US$33 per subject per month plus a small per-subject advertising royalty, with discounts as volume targets are met. As a franchisee you receive the diagnostic system, the workbook curriculum and brand support.
Success Tutoring provides a turnkey system it calls the "Success Kit". The elements a buyer should weigh:
- Launch and pre-marketing support so members are signed before opening.
- Site selection, leasing and fit-out support for the center.
- Tutor recruitment and tutor training through an online franchise training platform.
- Ongoing marketing support under an international brand.
Success Tutoring describes its franchising as "flat": partners deal directly with head office leadership. Its franchise stories show owners from corporate, engineering, finance and small-business backgrounds. Neither brand requires a teaching qualification.
Success Tutoring also hired a former CEO of Kumon as Head of Global Partnerships, which is relevant if you are weighing a self-learning brand against a tutor-led one: the Success Tutoring leadership team understands the workbook model from the inside.
Tutoring franchise investment and fees
The public record for JEI, with sources:
- Initial franchise fee of US$22,500, reported consistently across 1851 Franchise, Franzy and PeerSense.
- Total initial investment of US$61,000 to US$111,000 (Franzy, citing the 2024 FDD) or US$65,000 to US$115,000 (PeerSense, citing the 2026 FDD).
- Ongoing royalty reported by directories as US$23 to US$33 per subject per month, plus US$1 to US$3 per subject per month for advertising. At least one directory describes the royalty as 8 percent plus 1 percent instead, so the structure should be confirmed in Item 6 of the current FDD.
JEI sits in the lower-cost tier of center-based tutoring franchises, consistent with a smaller footprint and a materials-led model.
Success Tutoring does not publish fees in articles. The investment schedule sets out current US and Canadian figures, and the potential earnings page explains how membership revenue builds over the first year. A tutor-led retail center will generally require more capital than a workbook center; the trade is a broader service and a membership base.
Markets and footprint
JEI is a global brand with its roots in Korea and operating companies in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong, per its regional websites and directory profiles. Its US network is modest: 2024 to 2026 FDD-based directory listings show roughly 46 to 54 locations, with JEI's own franchise page listing corporate offices in Los Angeles and Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Older directory data showing several hundred US units appears to reflect earlier disclosure years and should not be read as current.
Success Tutoring entered the US in Dallas, Texas, with a stated plan of 80 units across Texas in five years. It has announced a 2026 launch in Canada with a goal of 120 units by 2029, and it also operates or has announced markets in New Zealand, Singapore, the United Kingdom and India. Buyers in Texas and Canada can review available locations for current territories.
