Territory data last updated .
The Northern Territory is unlike anywhere else in Australia. It covers about a sixth of the continent but has only around 250,000 residents, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and it has the youngest median age of any state or territory. More than half of Territorians live in the Greater Darwin area, which includes the city of Palmerston. For anyone considering a tutoring franchise in the Northern Territory, the opportunity is concentrated in that Top End urban area: a young, mobile population with a high share of families, and very few dedicated in-person tutoring centres.
How the NT school system works
The NT follows the Australian Curriculum from Transition, the first year of school, through to Year 10. Students sit NAPLAN in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.
The NT Board of Studies (NTBOS) oversees curriculum, assessment and certification. Senior students work towards the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET). The NTCET is built on the same framework as South Australia's SACE, and the SACE Board of South Australia works with the Territory on assessment and moderation. That means NT senior students study SACE subjects, complete the Research Project and sit the same Stage 2 external assessments as their South Australian peers, with results feeding into an ATAR.
In Darwin and Palmerston, many government students move through a three-tier structure: primary school, middle school for Years 7 to 9, and senior school or college for Years 10 to 12. Darwin also has Catholic and independent schools, including St John's Catholic College, Kormilda College, Haileybury Rendall School and Essington School.
Why Territory families look for tutoring
High mobility
The NT has one of the most mobile populations in Australia. Defence members, public servants, health workers, and construction and resources workers often come for a few years before moving on. Children arriving from other states and countries regularly find that the curriculum sequence is different, and need help to catch up or consolidate.
NAPLAN and school transitions
Parents use NAPLAN results to spot gaps early. The move to middle school in Year 7 and to senior school in Year 10 are natural points where families seek extra support in English and Maths.
Senior results
NTCET students sit external SACE assessments, so strong literacy and numeracy matter for the ATAR and for meeting certificate requirements.
Limited local options
Outside the large east coast cities, families have few in-person tutoring choices. Many Territory parents do not want to rely on online lessons alone, especially for younger children.
Where the opportunity is in the NT
Darwin
The city of Darwin covers the CBD, the northern suburbs such as Casuarina, Nightcliff, Rapid Creek, Leanyer and Muirhead, and the established suburbs close to Charles Darwin University. See our Darwin page for a closer look.
Palmerston
Palmerston, about 20 kilometres south-east of the CBD, is the Territory's second-largest city and one of its fastest-growing. New suburbs such as Zuccoli, Johnston and Mitchell are full of young families, and many defence families live close to Robertson Barracks.
Beyond the Top End
Alice Springs, Katherine and other regional towns have smaller populations and no territories drawn on the map. Success Tutoring is happy to talk with people interested in these communities, and territories are drawn with partners using population and school data.
Each territory on the map is drawn around a catchment of households and school-age children.
Owning a Success Tutoring centre in the NT
NT partners may receive support including:
- Site selection, leasing and fit-out support for a retail-style centre.
- Tutor recruitment and training through an online platform, which is important in a smaller labour market.
- Learning resources and a structured program.
- Launch and marketing support for a new centre.
- Ongoing marketing and support from head office.
The agreed support appears in the franchise agreement and disclosure documents.
You do not need a teaching background. People with defence, public service, health or business careers often understand Territory families' needs well.
Frequently asked questions
Does the NTCET follow the same subjects as the SACE?
Yes. The NTCET is built on the SACE framework and uses SACE subjects and assessment. Success Tutoring centres follow a structured program focused on core skills that are relevant to both.
Can I open a centre outside Darwin and Palmerston?
Territories are currently mapped in Greater Darwin. If you are interested in another NT town, get in touch and we can discuss whether a territory could be drawn.
Does the wet season affect a tutoring business in the Top End?
School continues through the wet season, and families still need regular routines. An accessible, air-conditioned site with good parking helps, and Success Tutoring supports partners with site selection.
What franchise rules apply in the NT?
The national Franchising Code of Conduct, enforced by the ACCC, applies in the Northern Territory. Seek independent legal and financial advice before signing.
