Few parts of Australia have as many well-known schools packed into so small an area as Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. Between Surry Hills and the coast, families can choose from fully selective public schools, long-established independent schools, Catholic colleges and Jewish day schools, often within a few kilometres of home. A tutoring franchise in the Eastern Suburbs serves parents who take that choice seriously and want steady, high-quality support in English and Maths alongside it.
The region spans the Woollahra, Waverley and Randwick council areas and the eastern edge of the City of Sydney. It is one of the most expensive housing markets in the country, but it is also one of the most densely populated, with many families raising children in apartments and semis rather than large houses. For how the east compares with other parts of the city, see our Sydney page.
The school landscape in the east
Students follow NESA syllabuses and finish with the HSC, but the path there varies a lot by sector.
Selective and public options. Sydney Boys High and Sydney Girls High, side by side near Moore Park, are both fully selective and draw students from across Sydney. Woollahra Public School hosts an Opportunity Class, though its intake was reduced from 2025, which has made places even more competitive. Comprehensive high schools include Randwick Boys High, Randwick Girls High, Rose Bay Secondary College and Inner Sydney High School, a newer vertical school on Cleveland Street in Surry Hills.
Independent schools. The Eastern Suburbs have an unusually high share of students in independent schools, including Cranbrook and The Scots College in Bellevue Hill, Ascham in Edgecliff, Kambala and Kincoppal-Rose Bay in Rose Bay, SCEGGS Darlinghurst and Reddam House. Moriah College in Queens Park and Emanuel School in Randwick serve the area's large Jewish community.
Catholic colleges. Waverley College, Brigidine College and Marcellin College in Randwick are long-standing choices.
When parents are paying for, or competing for, places like these, many treat weekly tutoring as part of the plan rather than a fix for a problem.
What drives demand here
Three things stand out. First, entry testing happens at several points: OC and selective tests for public schools, and scholarship and entrance assessments for independent schools. Second, expectations are high once students are in, and parents want their child to keep pace with demanding classmates. Third, time is scarce. Many households have two parents in demanding careers in the CBD, so a centre that runs reliable weekly sessions close to home, without needing a long drive across the city, solves a real problem.
The east also has a large tutor pool. UNSW's Kensington campus sits in the middle of the Randwick territory, and the University of Sydney and UTS are a short trip away, which makes recruiting capable tutors easier than in most regions.
The territories
Randwick
Randwick is the family heart of the south-east, taking in Kensington, Kingsford, Coogee and Clovelly as well as Randwick itself. The L2 and L3 light rail lines now run to Randwick and Kingsford, and the Spot and Belmore Road give the area busy village shopping strips. The Royal Randwick shopping centre and Westfield Eastgardens to the south are the larger retail anchors. Families here include young professionals, university staff and long-established households.
Rose Bay
Rose Bay sits on the harbour between Double Bay and Vaucluse, close to Dover Heights, Bellevue Hill and Bondi. New South Head Road is the main retail spine, and Westfield Bondi Junction, one of the largest centres in the east, is within easy reach. This territory is home to many of the region's independent schools and a large Jewish community, and family incomes are among the highest in Sydney.
Surry Hills and Sydney
The Surry Hills and Sydney territories cover the inner east and the city fringe, where Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Redfern and Waterloo have seen strong apartment growth. Families here are often renting, often walking, and often looking for activities they can reach without a car. Inner Sydney High School's opening reflects how many more school-age children now live in the inner city.
Your centre, our system
Support for an Eastern Suburbs partner can involve site selection, leasing and fit-out help for a retail-style centre, tutor recruitment and training through an online platform, learning resources and a structured program, ongoing marketing, and launch support when the centre opens. How far that support goes is defined in the franchise agreement and disclosure documents.
In the east, retail space is expensive and village high streets vary block by block, so site selection support looks closely at visibility and easy drop-off. You do not need to be a teacher; many partners come from corporate, legal, finance and engineering careers.
Frequently asked questions
Do families at independent schools in the Eastern Suburbs use tutoring centres?
Yes. Many independent-school families want regular support to keep pace with demanding programmes, and a centre with set weekly sessions is often easier to fit in than private home tutors.
How has the Woollahra OC change affected demand?
With fewer Opportunity Class places available at Woollahra Public School from 2025, competition for each place has risen. Success Tutoring centres work on core skills through a structured program; they are not specialist OC coaching colleges.
Is apartment living a barrier to a tutoring centre?
No. Dense apartment suburbs such as Surry Hills and Kensington put many families within walking distance of a single high street, which can suit a centre well.
Which rules apply to franchising in New South Wales?
The national Franchising Code of Conduct, enforced by the ACCC, applies in NSW. Always seek independent legal advice before signing.
