Territory data last updated .
Western Australia covers a third of the continent, but most of its close to three million residents live in and around Perth, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The state's resources economy has driven strong population growth, and families have been arriving from interstate and overseas to take up jobs in mining, construction, health and engineering. For anyone looking at a tutoring franchise in Western Australia, that means a growing, well-paid family population and a school system with several high-pressure milestones.
Success Tutoring already has a presence in WA. Success Tutoring Claremont was a finalist for Best Children's Services Franchise in 2023 and has won a franchise award.
The WA school system
The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) sets the curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 12 in WA, using the Western Australian Curriculum. Children start with Kindergarten and Pre-primary, and since 2015 Year 7 has been the first year of high school. Students sit NAPLAN in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.
Senior students work towards the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). Students aiming for university take ATAR courses, which end in SCSA external exams. WA also has a requirement found in few other states: to achieve the WACE, students must demonstrate minimum standards of literacy and numeracy, either through strong Year 9 NAPLAN results or by passing the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) in Years 10 to 12. That requirement alone creates demand for targeted English and Maths support.
WA's selective pathway is also distinctive. Each year, Year 6 students sit the Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET) for Year 7 places in Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) programs. Perth Modern School is the state's only fully academically selective school, and a number of other public high schools across Perth run selective GATE academic programs. Competition for places is strong, and preparation often begins in Year 4 or 5.
Why WA families invest in tutoring
- The ASET in Year 6, which drives early demand for reasoning, reading, writing and Maths skills.
- The OLNA, which students must pass to receive the WACE if they have not met the standard through NAPLAN.
- ATAR exams in Year 12, which make English and Maths results important for university entry.
- FIFO and shift work, common in the resources sector, which means one parent is often away and families want reliable support with schoolwork.
- Migration, with many families from South Africa, the United Kingdom, India, Malaysia and other countries who bring strong expectations about tutoring.
Where the opportunity is in WA
Perth
Most WA territories sit in the Perth metropolitan area. The north-west coastal corridor towards Yanchep, the north-east around Ellenbrook and Midland, and the south-east corridor around Armadale, Kelmscott and Byford are among the fastest-growing areas, helped by the Metronet rail projects. Established suburbs such as Mount Lawley, Morley, Wembley Downs and the Fremantle area remain important. See our Perth page for more detail.
Regional WA
- Mandurah and the Peel region, south of Perth, with new estates and a rail link to the city.
- Bunbury and the South West, WA's second-largest urban area and a magnet for families seeking a coastal lifestyle.
- Kalgoorlie-Boulder, the heart of the Goldfields, with a mining workforce and families who often have few local tutoring options.
Only one partner can hold a given territory, and boundaries follow real household catchments rather than postcodes.
Owning a Success Tutoring centre in WA
Owning a centre in WA means using the same system as the rest of the network, which already includes a Perth centre. Support can include help to find and lease a shopfront, plan the fit-out, hire and train tutors, learning resources and a structured program, and local marketing support before and after opening. Training is delivered through an online platform, and partners receive ongoing support from head office. The franchise agreement and disclosure document set out the details.
Teaching experience is not a requirement. In a state built on resources, many interested partners are engineers, project managers and finance professionals looking for a business closer to home than a FIFO roster.
Frequently asked questions
Does Success Tutoring help students with the OLNA?
Centres work on core skills through a structured program, with sessions built around each student's level, which may be relevant to students preparing for the OLNA.
Is the time difference with Sydney a problem for support?
WA is two or three hours behind the east coast depending on daylight saving. Support is arranged with the time difference in mind, and the online training platform is available any time.
Are there Success Tutoring centres already in WA?
Yes. Success Tutoring Claremont was a finalist for Best Children's Services Franchise in 2023. The map on this page shows the territories open to new partners.
What legal requirements apply to buying a franchise in WA?
There is no separate WA franchise law. The Commonwealth Franchising Code of Conduct applies, and the ACCC enforces it. Seek independent legal advice and have an accountant review the numbers before signing.
