The Best Tutoring Franchises in Canada: 2026 Comparison | A Success Tutoring grand opening

Canada has one of the most developed supplemental-education markets in the world, with home-grown brands such as Oxford Learning and Spirit of Math alongside global networks like Kumon and Mathnasium. For anyone researching a tutoring franchise in Canada in 2026, the choice is less about whether demand exists and more about which model suits your capital, your city and your appetite for a mature brand versus a new entrant. This guide compares eight options, Success Tutoring, Kumon, Mathnasium, Oxford Learning and GradePower, Spirit of Math, Tutor Doctor and Sylvan, with attributed figures and a framework for deciding which is the best tutoring franchise for you.

Demand is strong and growing. Technavio forecasts the Canadian private tutoring market to grow by approximately USD 5.4 billion between 2024 and 2029, a compound rate of about 10%. Parents in large immigrant communities in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal are particularly consistent buyers of after-school education, which is why so many international brands have made Canada an early expansion market.

How we compared each tutoring franchise

A tutoring franchise grants you the right to run a supplemental-education business under a brand, with curriculum, systems, training and marketing supplied by the franchisor in exchange for an initial fee and ongoing royalties. For each brand we considered the model (center-based, classroom cohort or in-home), the ages and subjects served, the initial fee and total investment as published by the franchisor or a reputable directory, the royalty structure, the Canadian footprint and whether owners need a teaching background.

Canadian franchise law matters here. Six provinces, Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, have franchise disclosure legislation. Under Ontario's Arthur Wishart Act, for example, a franchisor must deliver its disclosure document at least 14 days before you sign any agreement or pay any money, and a franchisee who receives deficient or no disclosure has rescission rights, in some cases for up to two years. Figures below are rounded and attributed, and several brands publish only US figures, so request the Canadian disclosure document and seek legal advice before deciding.

Success Tutoring

Success Tutoring is an Australian-founded K-12 tutoring franchise launching in Canada in 2026. Franchise Executives reports a Canadian goal of 120 units by 2029, a Vancouver headquarters, a Canadian CEO, Gopal Venkata, and territories available across major cities including Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary and Montreal. Founded in Sydney in 2017 by Michael Black and franchising since around 2020, the brand reported 35 Australian centers in 2023 with 80 more scheduled, and territories sold in more than 100 locations. The model is a retail-style learning center where families join as members for English and math support from kindergarten to grade 12. Centers have opened with 45 to 70 or more members signed before opening day through launch pre-marketing, according to company news posts. Partners receive leasing and fit-out support, tutor recruitment and training through an online platform, curriculum, ongoing marketing and a direct relationship with head office leadership. Owners do not need to be teachers. The company is a member of the International Franchise Association and has hired a former CEO of Kumon as Head of Global Partnerships. Fees are published on our investment schedule, and Canadian territories on available locations.

Kumon

Kumon is the largest supplemental-education franchise globally, with Kumon reporting a presence in 60 countries and more than 3.5 million students. The model is a worksheet-based math and reading program in which students work independently under an instructor. In the United States, directories consistently cite an initial franchise fee of approximately $2,000 with per-student royalties, and total investment estimates that range widely (one 2026 FDD summary cites roughly USD 101,600 to 233,800), and Kumon makes no Item 19 financial performance representation. We could not verify a separate published Canadian fee schedule or center count, so request Kumon Canada's disclosure document directly. Kumon suits owners who want a low entry fee and a globally recognized brand and are comfortable with an instructor-led self-learning format. Read our guide: Success Tutoring vs Kumon.

Mathnasium

Mathnasium is a math-only learning center franchise with, according to Elite Franchise Magazine, a global network of more than 1,200 centers. US FDD summaries via Franzy report a total initial investment of approximately USD 113,000 to 150,000, a $49,000 initial fee for a first center ($26,500 for additional centers), a royalty of about 10% of gross revenue and a 2% marketing fee. Canadian figures are not separately published in the sources we reviewed, so request the Canadian disclosure document. Students attend a drop-in style center where instructors use a proprietary math curriculum. The single-subject focus is a clear proposition for parents of a child struggling in math, and a limitation when the same family needs reading or writing support. See Mathnasium vs Success Tutoring.

Oxford Learning Centres (and GradePower Learning)

Oxford Learning is Canada's best-known home-grown tutoring franchise, founded in London, Ontario, in 1984 by Dr. Nick Whitehead. The Canadian Franchise Association's listing reports a franchise fee of CAD 40,000 and total costs of approximately CAD 132,700 to 232,175 depending on location, with CAD 50,000 suggested for working capital, and a footprint of 131 locations in Canada and 22 in the United States. The brand was acquired by Diversified Royalty Corp in February 2020 and has won multiple CFA awards. Centers offer tutoring across the school years. Prospective partners researching the US side of the network will also encounter the GradePower Learning name; confirm the relationship, territory and fee structure directly with the franchisor, as we could not independently verify separate GradePower figures. Oxford Learning suits an owner who wants an established Canadian brand with four decades of operating history and is prepared for a full-service center investment.

Spirit of Math Schools

Spirit of Math is a Toronto-founded, classroom-based math program for high-performing students in grades 1 to 11, in business since 1992 according to Franchise Canada. CEO Kim Langen told Retail Insider in August 2025 that the brand served just under 12,000 students through 27 campuses (26 physical and one virtual), concentrated in the Greater Toronto Area with campuses in Ottawa, Alberta, Winnipeg and British Columbia; other company materials cite more than 40 campuses across North America, including a first Alabama campus. Students attend a weekly 1.5- to 2-hour cohort class with drills, problem solving and homework, and admission involves an interview. The Franchise Mall, a third-party directory, lists an initial franchise fee of approximately CAD 39,000; the company does not publish fees on its site, so request the disclosure document. Spirit of Math suits an owner in a catchment with a strong population of high achievers who wants a math-enrichment model rather than remedial tutoring. Tutor Doctor

Tutor Doctor is a Canadian-founded, home-based franchise: the owner manages a roster of tutors who teach in the family's home or online, with no center lease. Founded in 2000 and franchising since 2003, with parent Clear Summit Group based in Toronto, it reports more than 730 territories in 16 countries (FranchisePayback). US directory figures show an initial franchise fee of approximately USD 54,700 and a total investment of roughly USD 73,000 to 161,000 (FranNet), with an 8% royalty and 2% ad fund. Canadian fee figures were not separately published in the sources we reviewed. The low overhead is the attraction; the trade-off is no physical presence in the community and a revenue line that depends heavily on the owner's own sales work. See Success Tutoring vs Tutor Doctor.

Sylvan Learning

Sylvan has provided supplemental education since 1979 through K-12 learning centers. Analyses of its 2025 US FDD report a total initial investment of approximately USD 108,000 to 239,000, a $36,900 initial fee, an 11% royalty and a 5% advertising fee, with Item 19 average gross sales of $386,112 for FY2024; Franzy, citing the 2026 FDD, reports a wider range of roughly USD 118,000 to 288,000 and a $47,000 fee. Unit counts are reported at roughly 430 to 470. We could not verify a current Canadian center count or Canadian fee schedule, so ask Sylvan directly for its Canadian disclosure. Sylvan suits an owner who wants a broad, multi-subject brand with long-standing recognition and can fund a larger center. See Sylvan Learning vs Success Tutoring.

How to choose the best tutoring franchise in Canada

  • Center, classroom or in-home? In-home (Tutor Doctor) is cheapest to start. Cohort classrooms (Spirit of Math) fill by school year. Membership centers (Success Tutoring, Oxford Learning, Sylvan) build a visible local asset with recurring revenue.
  • Breadth versus focus. Math-only or method-based brands (Mathnasium, Kumon, Spirit of Math) are clear and narrow. Multi-subject K-12 brands (Success Tutoring, Oxford Learning, Sylvan) serve more of the catchment for longer.
  • Mature brand or early territory? Oxford Learning and Kumon offer decades of Canadian data but limited open territory in major cities. Success Tutoring's 2026 launch offers first choice of territory in Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary and Montreal with a national launch plan behind it.
  • Insist on Canadian disclosure. Several global brands publish US figures only. In the six regulated provinces you are entitled to a disclosure document at least 14 days before signing or paying.
  • Model the revenue structure. Membership, package and per-student royalty models produce different cash flows; see potential earnings for how we model a center.
  • Ask about launch support. Opening with members already signed changes your first year. Read our launch support page and how to start a tutoring franchise.

Frequently asked questions

Which provinces regulate franchising in Canada?

Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island have franchise disclosure legislation requiring a disclosure document at least 14 days before signing or payment. Other provinces rely on general contract law. Seek legal advice wherever you plan to open.

What is the cheapest tutoring franchise in Canada?

Kumon has the lowest published initial fee (approximately USD 2,000 in US disclosures), and in-home models such as Tutor Doctor avoid premises costs. Low entry cost generally comes with per-student royalties or no storefront, so compare total economics rather than the fee alone.

Is Success Tutoring open in Canada?

Success Tutoring announced a 2026 Canadian launch with a goal of 120 units by 2029, headquartered in Vancouver, with territories available in Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary and Montreal (Franchise Executives). Check available locations for current territories.

Do I need to be a teacher?

Success Tutoring does not require it: the owner runs the business and tutors are recruited and trained through the system. Requirements vary by brand, so confirm with each franchisor.

Can I own more than one center?

Most brands in this list sell additional units or multi-unit agreements. Ask each franchisor about its multi-unit terms and whether neighboring territories are still available in your city.
