Moncton grew up as a railway town on the bend of the Petitcodiac River, and it has kept its role as a crossroads. Highways, the CN main line and an international airport make it a distribution and logistics hub for Atlantic Canada. Greater Moncton, which includes the City of Dieppe and the Town of Riverview, had about 158,000 residents at the 2021 Census, according to Statistics Canada, and has since been among the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the country. A tutoring franchise in Moncton would serve a fast-changing population of newcomers, families moving east from Ontario and long-established Acadian and anglophone households.

Success Tutoring, founded in Sydney in 2017, is launching in Canada. No Moncton territory has been drawn yet. Success Tutoring is looking for a franchise partner here, and the territory would be mapped with that partner.

English and French, side by side

In 2002 Moncton became the first officially bilingual city in Canada, and its schools show it. Two separate public school districts serve the same streets:

  • Anglophone East School District runs English-language schools across Moncton and Riverview, including Moncton High School, Harrison Trimble High School, Bernice MacNaughton High School and Riverview High School, with French immersion offered alongside the English program.
  • District scolaire francophone Sud runs French-language schools in Moncton and Dieppe, such as École L'Odyssée and École Mathieu-Martin, with its own curriculum and assessments.

Dieppe is mostly francophone, Riverview mostly anglophone, and Moncton itself is a mix. It is common for a household to have one parent schooled in French and one in English, and for children to attend immersion or a French-language school while English dominates at home, or the reverse.

For students in the anglophone sector, the Grade 9 English Language Proficiency Assessment is a hurdle to graduation, and math confidence is a frequent concern among parents.

Post-secondary options are close at hand: the Université de Moncton, Canada's largest French-language university outside Quebec, Crandall University, New Brunswick Community College's Moncton campus and the Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick campus in Dieppe.

What is driving demand in Greater Moncton

Newcomer families. International immigration has been a major source of Moncton's recent growth. Children arriving from the Philippines, India, Africa, the Middle East and elsewhere are learning a new school system, and often a new language, mid-way through their education.

Interprovincial movers. Families from Ontario and other provinces have come for more affordable housing. Many grew up where after-school learning centres were common and are surprised to find so few.

Bilingual balancing. Parents of immersion students, and of children in French-language schools where English is the stronger home language, want a regular slot for English reading, writing and math.

Working parents. Contact centres, hospitals, logistics firms and government offices employ many two-income households. A fixed weekly session at a nearby centre fits around busy schedules.

Where families are settling

  • North Moncton, around Elmwood Drive, Mapleton Road and the Royal Oaks and Irishtown areas, where many of the city's newer subdivisions have gone up.
  • Dieppe, especially the neighbourhoods south of Champlain Place and along Dieppe Boulevard, popular with francophone and bilingual families.
  • Riverview, across the Petitcodiac, a largely residential town with established schools and young families.
  • West and east Moncton, including Lewisville and the streets off Mountain Road, older areas drawing first-time buyers.
  • Shediac and the coast, about 20 minutes away, where families commute into the city.

Trinity Drive, Mountain Road and the area around Champlain Place in Dieppe are where much of the region's family shopping happens.

Running a Success Tutoring centre in Moncton

A Moncton partner would open a retail-style learning centre, recruit a team of tutors and build up member families. Support that may be provided includes help with site selection and leasing, fit-out, tutor recruitment and training, learning resources, and launch and ongoing marketing, as set out in the franchise agreement and disclosure documents.

No teaching background is needed. Partners in the network have come from finance, engineering, corporate and small-business careers. Bilingual university and college students in Moncton are a practical place to start recruiting tutors.

Frequently asked questions

Would a Moncton centre serve both Anglophone East and Francophone Sud families?

Families from either district can join as members. Sessions are delivered in English, so French-language and immersion families typically come for extra English literacy and math support.

Does a Moncton territory include Dieppe and Riverview?

Territories are not yet drawn in Greater Moncton. They are mapped with each partner using census data on households, school-age children and schools, and the three communities function as one urban area for most families.

Do I need to speak French to run a centre in Moncton?

It is not a requirement, but being able to speak with parents in French is an asset in a bilingual city, and many local tutors and staff are bilingual.

What protection does New Brunswick law give franchise buyers?

The Franchises Act of New Brunswick obliges a franchisor to provide a disclosure document at least 14 days before you sign or hand over any payment, and gives you rights if that disclosure is not provided properly. Seek independent legal advice before you sign.

Moncton is part of our New Brunswick page, and Halifax is the nearest large Atlantic city with its own page. Read the guide to a tutoring franchise in Canada or see the investment schedule.
