Abilene is about 150 miles west of Fort Worth on Interstate 20, and it serves as the main city for a large stretch of West Central Texas known locally as the Big Country. The US Census Bureau counted about 125,000 residents in 2020. For a tutoring franchise in Abilene, the draw is an unusual mix of households: Air Force families on assignment, university faculty, hospital staff, and long-established ranching and oil families from the surrounding counties.

Success Tutoring launched in the United States in Texas, beginning in Dallas, and is seeking franchise partners in more Texas cities. Abilene has no territories on the map yet. Territories are drawn with a partner once there is interest, using local data on households and schools.

What makes Abilene different

Dyess Air Force Base on the southwest edge of the city is home to the 7th Bomb Wing and its B-1B bombers. It is one of the largest employers in the area, and it means a steady flow of children arriving from bases across the country and overseas.

Three private Christian universities give Abilene a college-town feel out of proportion to its size: Abilene Christian University, Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University. Cisco College, Texas State Technical College and a Texas Tech pharmacy campus add more students and staff.

New industry is arriving too. A very large AI data center campus north of the city, widely reported as the first site of the Stargate project, has brought construction crews, contractors and new permanent jobs. Hendrick Health, the region's main hospital system, remains a major employer.

The schools families choose between

Most of the city is served by Abilene ISD, which runs two comprehensive high schools, Abilene High and Cooper High, plus the Academy of Technology, Engineering, Math and Science (ATEMS), a choice campus for students drawn to STEM careers. Wylie ISD, covering the southwest side near Dyess and the Buffalo Gap Road corridor, has been growing fast and is popular with families buying newer homes. Smaller districts such as Clyde, Jim Ned and Merkel serve the outer ring, and church-affiliated private schools are common in a city with deep faith roots.

Texas public schools teach the state standards set through the Texas Education Agency, which publishes an A to F rating for every campus and district. Students in grades 3 to 8 take STAAR, and high school students face end-of-course exams that count toward graduation. A 2025 law will retire STAAR in favor of three shorter tests per year starting in 2027–28.

Why Abilene families seek tutoring

Military moves. Children from Air Force families may change schools every two or three years. Texas belongs to the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, which helps with enrollment and graduation rules, but it cannot close a gap in skills. A child arriving from another state can find fractions, essay structure or reading expectations taught in a different order.

Steady weekly support during deployments. When one parent is deployed or away on training, the parent at home often wants a reliable, structured slot in the week.

Academic expectations in university households. Faculty and staff at the three universities tend to follow their children's progress closely and look for consistent, skills-based help.

Getting ready for college credit. Many Abilene high schoolers take dual credit through Cisco College or the local universities. Meeting the Texas Success Initiative standard comes first, which focuses families on reading, writing and math by tenth grade.

Neighborhoods with young families

Growth in Abilene runs mainly south and southwest. Subdivisions off Buffalo Gap Road, Antilley Road and Southwest Drive, and the areas zoned to Wylie ISD, have added the most new homes. The Mall of Abilene and the shopping along Southwest Drive and South 14th Street are where many of those families shop each week. On the north side, neighborhoods around ACU and Hardin-Simmons have older housing popular with university staff, and Dyess families often live in the base housing or in the southwest suburbs closest to the gate.

What owning a Success Tutoring center involves

The franchise partner runs a retail-style learning center as a local business: leasing the site, hiring and leading tutors, and building trust with families and schools. Support that may be provided includes site selection and leasing, fit-out, tutor recruitment and training, learning resources, marketing and opening support, plus ongoing help from head office. The franchise agreement and Franchise Disclosure Document set out the details.

You do not need to be an educator. Partners often come from business, finance, engineering or management, and veterans and military spouses with leadership experience may find the role a good fit. Students at Abilene's universities are a ready source of part-time tutors.

Frequently asked questions

Does Success Tutoring have a center in Abilene?

No. Abilene is a market where the brand is looking for a franchise partner. Territories are drawn together with that partner during the application process.

Is a tutoring franchise a fit for a military spouse or veteran?

It can be, since partners lead a team rather than teach. Consider how a future posting would affect your plans and discuss it during the process, as transfer and resale terms are set out in the franchise agreement.

What disclosure rules apply when buying a franchise in Texas?

Federal law, through the FTC Franchise Rule, requires that you receive the Franchise Disclosure Document at least 14 days before signing or paying. Texas has no separate franchise registration requirement. Seek independent legal advice before you sign.

Will the data center growth change Abilene's school population?

It is too early to say how many families will settle permanently. Watch district enrollment reports and local housing permits as part of your own research.
