Gippsland stretches from the edge of Melbourne's south-east to the New South Wales border, taking in dairy country, the Latrobe Valley, the Gippsland Lakes and the High Country. It is a big region of separate towns rather than one city, and each has its own story. For a tutoring franchise in Gippsland, the opportunity is in the larger towns along the Princes Highway and the Gippsland train line, where families have far fewer after-school learning options than families in Melbourne.

A region in transition

Two big shifts are shaping Gippsland's towns.

Families moving east. Warragul and Drouin, in Baw Baw Shire, have been among the fastest-growing towns in regional Victoria. They sit about an hour or so from Melbourne by car or V/Line train, and many young families have bought new homes here, often with one parent commuting towards the city or working from home part of the week.

A changing economy in the Latrobe Valley. Morwell, Traralgon, Moe and Churchill grew around brown coal power. Hazelwood power station closed in 2017, and the remaining stations are scheduled to close over the coming years. Governments and industry are investing in new energy projects, including the offshore wind zone declared off the Gippsland coast, along with health, education and manufacturing. Many local parents see education as the surest way to give their children choices in that new economy.

Further east, Sale, Maffra and Bairnsdale serve farming districts, the RAAF base at East Sale and the tourism towns of the Gippsland Lakes.

How school works across Gippsland

Gippsland schools follow the Victorian Curriculum F–10 from the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA). Students sit NAPLAN in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 and finish with the VCE or the VCE Vocational Major. Some take VCE VET subjects through TAFE Gippsland, and the Gippsland Tech School at Federation University's Churchill campus runs STEM programs for secondary students from across the region.

The main government secondary schools are spread along the corridor: Warragul Regional College and Drouin Secondary College in the west, Kurnai College and Traralgon College in the Latrobe Valley, Sale College, and Bairnsdale Secondary College in the east. Catholic options include Marist-Sion College in Warragul, Lavalla Catholic College in Traralgon, Catholic College Sale and Nagle College in Bairnsdale. Independent schools include Gippsland Grammar in Sale and Bairnsdale and St Paul's Anglican Grammar School with campuses in Traralgon and Warragul.

Victoria's selective entry high schools are all in metropolitan Melbourne, so selective entry is rarely the main driver here. Demand comes from parents who want their children confident in the basics, ready for secondary school and on track for the VCE.

What Gippsland parents are looking for

Talk to parents in Gippsland and a few needs come up:

  • Local access. In much of the region, the nearest dedicated tutoring centre can be a long drive away. Many parents want a physical place with a regular weekly time.
  • Keeping up after a move. Families arriving from Melbourne want their children to keep the routine they had before.
  • Pathways after school. Federation University's Gippsland campus at Churchill, TAFE Gippsland and Melbourne universities all draw local students. Parents of Year 9 and 10 students want them to keep doors open when they choose VCE subjects.
  • Support for working households. Shift work in health, energy, agriculture and defence means parents value an after-school routine that is predictable.

Territories on the map

The territory map shows open areas centred on Warragul, Morwell and Bairnsdale. Each is drawn around its own town catchment.

Warragul

Warragul is the commercial centre of Baw Baw Shire, with Drouin a few minutes to the west and new estates on both towns' edges. Queen Street and the town's shopping centres serve families from the surrounding dairy districts as well as the town itself, and Warragul has its own V/Line station.

Morwell

Morwell sits at the centre of the Latrobe Valley, between Traralgon and Moe and close to Churchill. Mid Valley Shopping Centre draws shoppers from across the valley, and the town is home to many working families and government offices.

Bairnsdale

Bairnsdale is the main service town for East Gippsland, serving families from Paynesville, Lakes Entrance and the surrounding farming districts. Main Street is the retail heart.

What running a centre here involves

Success Tutoring partners run retail-style learning centres where families join as members and trained tutors work with students. Support may include the Success Kit, site selection and leasing help, fit-out, tutor recruitment and training through an online platform, learning resources, and marketing support before and after opening. The franchise agreement and disclosure documents set out exactly what is provided.

You do not need a teaching background. In regional towns, a partner who is part of the community, through local schools, sport or business networks, can build trust with families quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Is a regional town like Warragul or Bairnsdale big enough for a tutoring centre?

Each town is different, which is why each territory is drawn around its own catchment of households and school-age children. The live territory data on this page shows the residents and children in each area.

How does the Latrobe Valley's energy transition affect local families?

It has made many parents think hard about their children's future options. Families often look for support that helps children stay on track through school and into the VCE, whatever path they choose after that.

Can one partner cover more than one Gippsland town?

Territory arrangements are discussed during the process and set out in the franchise agreement. Talk to us about the towns you are interested in.

What legal protections apply when buying a franchise in Gippsland?

The national Franchising Code of Conduct, enforced by the ACCC, applies throughout Victoria. It requires disclosure before you sign. Seek independent legal advice before committing.
