Calgary has added people faster than almost any big city in Canada in recent years. The 2021 Census counted about 1.3 million residents, according to Statistics Canada, and the city has grown strongly since, with families arriving from other provinces and overseas drawn by jobs and housing that is cheaper than in Toronto or Vancouver. For a tutoring franchise in Calgary, the result is a steady flow of young families into new communities that have schools, parks and shops, but few established learning centres.
Success Tutoring is launching in Canada in 2026, with a goal of 120 units by 2029. Calgary territories have not yet been drawn. We are looking for franchise partners here, and territories are expected to be mapped with each partner using data on households, children and schools.
Schools in Calgary
Calgary families follow the Alberta Education program of studies. Most children attend the Calgary Board of Education, Alberta's largest school district, or the Calgary Catholic School District. Francophone students attend schools run by the Conseil scolaire FrancoSud.
Calgary also has an unusual amount of choice:
- Charter schools, such as Westmount Charter School for gifted learners, which are publicly funded but independently governed and often oversubscribed.
- Alternative programs within the public and Catholic boards, including French immersion, Spanish and Mandarin bilingual programs, and International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement in high school.
- Independent schools, from faith-based schools to university-preparatory schools.
The key checkpoints are the Provincial Achievement Tests in Grades 6 and 9 and the diploma exams in Grade 12, which normally count for 30 per cent of the final mark in courses such as Math 30-1 and English 30-1. Those marks largely decide admission to the University of Calgary, Mount Royal University and universities elsewhere.
Why Calgary families want tutoring
Families on the move. Many households arrived in the last few years from Ontario, BC or overseas. Their children are switching curriculums mid-stream, and parents want help filling gaps, especially in math.
A new math curriculum. Alberta's new kindergarten to Grade 6 math curriculum, phased in since 2022, expects quicker recall of number facts and standard methods. Parents who learned math differently often want support.
Lost class time. Labour action in 2025 disrupted classes, and the province cancelled the January 2026 diploma exam sitting and the 2026 Grade 9 PATs. Families with students heading into Grade 12 have been especially keen to make up ground.
Busy households. Calgary has a young, high-earning workforce, and many families have two working parents. A dependable weekly session close to home fits that routine.
Where Calgary is growing
Calgary's growth happens in planned communities at the edges of the city:
- The deep southeast, including Seton, Mahogany, Auburn Bay, Cranston and Legacy, some of the largest family communities in the city.
- The northeast, including Cornerstone, Savanna, Redstone and Skyview Ranch, with large, multigenerational and newcomer households.
- The north, including Livingston, Evanston, Sage Hill and Carrington along the Stoney Trail corridor.
- The southwest, including Walden and the communities opened up by the completion of the Stoney Trail ring road.
- Nearby towns such as Airdrie, Cochrane and Chestermere, which have grown quickly as commuter communities.
These areas are full of strip malls and new retail centres where a learning centre can sit alongside the grocery store and the pharmacy, which is how families like to shop for services.
What a Calgary partner does
A Success Tutoring partner runs a retail-style centre where students from kindergarten to Grade 12 attend regular weekly sessions in English and math as members. Support from the brand can include site selection and leasing, fit-out, tutor recruitment and training, learning resources, ongoing marketing and help planning a launch.
You do not need to be a teacher. Many partners come from corporate, engineering, finance and small-business careers, and Calgary's energy and professional services workforce has exactly those skills. Early partners in a new market have ongoing support from the Success Tutoring team; the support provided is described in the franchise agreement and disclosure documents.
Frequently asked questions
Are there tutoring franchise territories available in Calgary now?
Calgary territories are being drawn with partners. Register your interest and we can discuss a territory around the community you want, using data on residents, children and schools.
Does Success Tutoring support Alberta diploma exam preparation?
Success Tutoring focuses on K–12 English and math, which includes the skills students need in courses such as Math 30-1 and English 30-1. Each student's program is set to their level and goals.
What disclosure rules apply to buying a franchise in Calgary?
Alberta's Franchises Act requires a disclosure document at least 14 days before you sign or pay anything. Seek independent legal advice before committing.
Could I open in Airdrie or Cochrane instead of the city?
Yes. Commuter towns around Calgary have many young families and limited tutoring choice, and territories can be drawn there too.
