Edmonton is Alberta's capital and a city of more than a million people; the 2021 Census counted just over one million in the city alone, according to Statistics Canada. It is a government, university and energy town, with a younger population than most large Canadian cities and a fast pace of new home building. For a tutoring franchise in Edmonton, the opportunity sits in the many new neighbourhoods at the city's edges and in suburbs such as St. Albert and Sherwood Park.
Success Tutoring is launching in Canada in 2026, with a goal of 120 units by 2029. Edmonton territories have not been drawn yet. We are looking for franchise partners in the Edmonton region and expects to draw territories with them using data on households, children and schools.
The Edmonton school landscape
Edmonton schools teach the Alberta Education program of studies. The two largest systems are Edmonton Public Schools and Edmonton Catholic Schools, and francophone families attend schools run by the Conseil scolaire Centre-Nord. Suburban families are served by separate divisions, such as Elk Island Public Schools in Sherwood Park and St. Albert Public Schools and Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools in St. Albert.
Edmonton Public Schools is known for its "programs of choice": families can apply to schools outside their neighbourhood for language programs such as French immersion and Ukrainian, Mandarin, Spanish and Arabic bilingual programs, along with arts, sports, International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement. Parents here are used to comparing schools and planning a pathway.
Provincial checkpoints follow the Alberta pattern: Provincial Achievement Tests in Grades 6 and 9, and diploma exams in Grade 12 courses, normally worth 30 per cent of the final mark. Admission to the University of Alberta, MacEwan University and NAIT programs depends heavily on those marks.
Why Edmonton families look for tutoring
The University of Alberta is among Canada's largest research universities, and admission to its engineering, science and health programs is competitive. Families with university plans watch Grade 11 and 12 math and English marks closely, and many start building skills well before then.
At the younger end, Alberta's new kindergarten to Grade 6 curriculum in math and English language arts has been phased in since 2022, with a stronger focus on number facts, phonics and foundational reading. Parents want reassurance that their children are keeping up.
Edmonton also receives many newcomer families, including large numbers through federal and Alberta immigration programs, and children learning English alongside the curriculum are a significant part of the demand. And, as elsewhere in Alberta, labour action in 2025 disrupted learning: the province cancelled the January 2026 diploma exam sitting and the 2026 Grade 9 PATs.
A membership model with regular weekly sessions in English and math, from kindergarten to Grade 12, gives these families continuity. Many Edmonton parents also juggle shift work in health care, government and the energy sector, so a fixed weekly time slot helps.
Edmonton's growth areas
- The southwest, including Windermere, Ambleside, Heritage Valley, Chappelle and Keswick, where new schools fill quickly.
- The southeast, including the Meadows, Ellerslie, Laurel, Walker and Charlesworth, home to many young and newcomer families.
- The west, including Lewis Farms, Secord and Rosenthal, near West Edmonton Mall and the Anthony Henday.
- The north, including the Palisades and the communities along the Anthony Henday's northern stretch.
- St. Albert and Sherwood Park, established, higher-income suburbs with strong school systems.
- Spruce Grove, Beaumont, Leduc and Fort Saskatchewan, smaller cities in the metro area that have grown fast.
Each Success Tutoring territory is exclusive and drawn around a catchment of households and children, so partners in neighbouring areas do not compete for the same families.
Running a centre in Edmonton
Edmonton partners run a retail-style learning centre, recruit and lead a team of tutors, and build a member base of local families. Support from Success Tutoring may include site selection and leasing, the fit-out, tutor recruitment and training through its online training platform, learning resources and a structured program, ongoing marketing, and help planning the opening. The franchise agreement and disclosure documents set out what that support covers.
You do not need to be a teacher. Many partners come from corporate, engineering, finance and small-business backgrounds, and Edmonton's government, health and energy workforce includes many people ready for business ownership. Students at the University of Alberta, MacEwan and NAIT are a large pool of potential tutors.

Sessions in English and math are set to each student's level, and tutors can work on skills students meet in class and on PATs and diploma exams.
What franchise law protects buyers in Edmonton?
Alberta's Franchises Act requires a disclosure document at least 14 days before you sign or pay, with rescission rights if it is not provided. Seek independent legal advice before committing.
