Killeen grew up beside one of the largest military installations in the United States. Fort Hood (named Fort Cavazos from 2023 until the Army restored the Fort Hood name in 2025) sits on the city's western and northern edge, and the soldiers, civilian staff and families connected to it shape almost everything about Killeen, including its schools. The city had about 153,000 residents at the 2020 Census, according to the US Census Bureau, which makes it one of the larger cities in Central Texas. Success Tutoring launched in the United States in Texas, starting in Dallas, and is now looking for franchise partners to open a tutoring franchise in Killeen and the surrounding Bell and Coryell County communities. No territories have been drawn here yet; they are drawn with partners.

A school system built around military families

Killeen ISD is one of the biggest districts in Texas. It serves Killeen, Harker Heights, Nolanville and the housing areas on post, and a large share of its students come from military-connected households. Its comprehensive high schools are Killeen, Ellison, Shoemaker, Harker Heights and Chaparral, the newest campus, on the city's south side. Neighboring districts fill in the rest of the area:

  • Copperas Cove ISD to the west, serving a city with its own large military population.
  • Belton ISD to the east, which takes in some of the subdivisions between Killeen and Belton.
  • Florence ISD and Salado ISD on the outer edges.

All of them follow the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) set by the Texas Education Agency. Students sit STAAR reading and math tests from grade 3, and end-of-course exams such as Algebra I and English II stand between high schoolers and graduation. In 2025 Texas lawmakers voted to swap STAAR for three shorter checkpoints across the year, beginning in 2027–28.

Texas is a member of the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, which helps transferring students with enrollment, course placement and graduation requirements. It eases the paperwork but cannot fill the learning gaps that come with changing schools every few years.

Why Killeen parents look for extra help

The biggest driver is movement. A military child may start kindergarten in Georgia, do third grade in Germany and arrive in Killeen for middle school. Each move means a new set of standards, a different pace and different expectations, and parents often notice their child has missed a topic entirely or covered it twice.

Other reasons come up again and again in a city like this:

  • Deployments and shift work. When one parent is deployed or both work long hours on post, families want a dependable weekly routine outside the home.
  • Arriving mid-year. Families often report in the middle of a semester, and children need to catch up on TEKS content and Texas testing quickly.
  • Planning for college. Many service members want their children to have options, and they know that strong foundations in the middle grades shape what high school courses are open to them.

Where families live around Killeen

Killeen's newer growth has pushed south and south-west, away from the older neighborhoods near the main gate and downtown. Areas worth knowing:

  • South Killeen, along Stan Schlueter Loop, Chaparral Road and Trimmier Road, where subdivisions have filled with young families and new campuses have opened.
  • Harker Heights, east along US-190, with established neighborhoods, a busy retail strip around Market Heights and many officer and senior enlisted households.
  • Nolanville, a small city between Harker Heights and Belton that has added homes quickly.
  • Copperas Cove, west of the post, a separate market with its own district and a strong military identity.

US-190 is the spine of the area, linking Copperas Cove, Killeen, Harker Heights and Belton to I-35. Shopping centers along it and along W.S. Young Drive draw families from across the region. Texas A&M University–Central Texas and Central Texas College, both in Killeen, enroll many students who could become tutor candidates, including military spouses and veterans.

Opening a Success Tutoring center in Killeen

A Success Tutoring center is a retail-style learning space where families join as members and attend on a regular weekly schedule. For a Killeen partner, support may include help with site selection and leasing, fit-out, tutor recruitment and training, learning resources, launch planning and ongoing marketing, along with ongoing support from the head office team. What is provided is set out in the franchise agreement and Franchise Disclosure Document.

You do not need a teaching background. Partners lead the business and the team while trained tutors work with students. Veterans and military spouses with leadership experience may find the role a natural fit; the franchise stories page shows the range of backgrounds partners come from.

Frequently asked questions

Does a military town suit a tutoring franchise?

High family turnover means a steady flow of new children arriving with gaps from previous schools, which is the kind of need weekly tutoring addresses. Turnover also means a partner needs to keep marketing to newly arrived families, not rely only on word of mouth.

Could a Killeen center also serve Harker Heights and Copperas Cove?

Possibly. Territories in this area have not been drawn yet. They are mapped with each partner using census data on households, school-age children and schools, so the final boundaries depend on where a center makes sense.

What happens when a family is reassigned partway through the year?

Families move, and that is part of running a business near a large post. Regular new arrivals help balance those departures, which is why steady local marketing matters in Killeen.
