Rhode Island is the smallest state by area, with about 1.1 million residents according to the US Census Bureau, but its schools have been through some of the most closely watched reforms in New England. That focus on raising achievement, plus a dense population that sits within a short drive of Providence, makes a tutoring franchise in Rhode Island a realistic and manageable opportunity.

Success Tutoring started its US expansion in Texas. Rhode Island has no centers yet, and a partner here would be the brand's first in the state.

Rhode Island's schools and RICAS

The Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) oversees public schools, which follow the Rhode Island Core Standards in English language arts and math. Testing looks like this:

  • Rhode Island Comprehensive Assessment System (RICAS): English language arts and math in grades 3 through 8. Since 2018, RICAS has been based on the Massachusetts MCAS, which lets Rhode Island compare its results with one of the highest-performing states in the country.
  • PSAT and SAT: high school students take the PSAT in grade 10 and the SAT in grade 11.
  • Science testing at set grades.

The comparison with Massachusetts has been a wake-up call. Rhode Island's RICAS results have generally trailed those of its neighbor, and raising proficiency in reading and math has become a statewide priority.

Providence and school reform

In 2019 the state took control of Providence Public Schools after a review found deep problems. The takeover was planned as a multi-year turnaround, with control returning to the city in 2026. The effort put achievement, and the gap between Providence and its suburbs, at the center of public debate.

Other options

Rhode Island has a strong Catholic and independent school tradition, including La Salle Academy, Bishop Hendricken, Moses Brown and The Wheeler School, plus a growing number of public charter schools and mayoral academies. Providence's Classical High School admits students by examination.

Why Rhode Island families look for tutoring

  • Catching up in reading and math. Many families know their school's RICAS results and want weekly help to make sure their child is on track.
  • Classical and private school admission. Entrance testing for Classical High School and private schools motivates families in the middle grades.
  • SAT preparation. With the SAT given to all juniors, families want strong algebra and reading foundations.
  • Commuter families. Many Rhode Islanders work in Providence or commute to Boston. A weekly program close to home is convenient.

Members attend each week for English and math, kindergarten through grade 12, which gives Rhode Island students steady progress toward the RICAS bar.

Where the families are

Rhode Island's population is concentrated around Narragansett Bay and the Providence metro:

  • Providence and the East Side, home to Brown University and many professional families.
  • Cranston and Warwick, the state's next-largest cities, with large suburban neighborhoods and busy retail corridors along Route 2 and Bald Hill Road.
  • East Greenwich and North Kingstown, popular with families for their schools.
  • The Blackstone Valley, including Lincoln, Cumberland, Smithfield and North Smithfield.
  • The East Bay, including Barrington, East Providence and Bristol.
  • South County, including South Kingstown and Narragansett, near the University of Rhode Island.

Because the state is so compact, a well-placed center can draw from several towns at once. Each territory is exclusive and is mapped using counts of school-age children, schools and competing providers.

What partners get from Success Tutoring

Head office can help a Rhode Island partner choose and lease a storefront and plan the fit-out. Support with tutor recruitment and training is available, and Brown, URI, Providence College and Rhode Island College are possible sources of tutors. Support may also include learning resources, a structured program and help planning marketing around opening, as set out in the franchise agreement and disclosure documents.

Partners are business leaders rather than teachers; the tutors handle instruction.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rhode Island a franchise registration state?

Yes. Under the Rhode Island Franchise Investment Act, franchisors must register with the state's Department of Business Regulation before offering franchises. The FTC Franchise Rule applies too, entitling you to the Franchise Disclosure Document at least 14 days before you sign or pay. Get independent legal advice before committing.

How does RICAS affect demand for tutoring?

Because RICAS is based on the Massachusetts MCAS, Rhode Island parents can see how their children compare with a very high bar. Many want consistent support to lift reading and math skills toward that standard.

Is Rhode Island big enough for a tutoring franchise?

Most Rhode Islanders live within a short drive of Providence, and the suburbs have many school-age children. What counts for a center is how many families live nearby, not the state's square mileage.

Is there a Success Tutoring center in Rhode Island?

No. Rhode Island is an open market and Success Tutoring is looking for its first partner there.
