Abbotsford is the largest city in the Fraser Valley, about an hour east of Vancouver along Highway 1, with Mount Baker on the horizon and farmland on every side. Statistics Canada counted about 154,000 residents at the 2021 census. It is often thought of as a farming and airport town, but its suburbs are young and growing, and many families move here from Surrey and Langley in search of more affordable housing. A tutoring franchise in Abbotsford serves a city with far fewer tutoring options per family than Metro Vancouver.

Success Tutoring launches in Canada in 2026. Abbotsford has two territories, Abbotsford and Abbotsford North.

Schools in Abbotsford

Abbotsford's public schools belong to the Abbotsford School District (SD34). The Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique runs French-language schooling, and Abbotsford has a large independent school sector, much of it faith-based, which BC partially funds.

Schools follow the BC curriculum from the Ministry of Education and Child Care. Students write the Foundation Skills Assessment in Grades 4 and 7 and the graduation numeracy and literacy assessments in Grades 10 and 12. SD34 has some programs that set it apart:

  • Traditional schools, a district program of choice with a clear code of conduct, regular homework and a dress code. King Traditional and South Poplar Traditional serve elementary students, and Abbotsford Traditional serves Grades 6 to 12. Families from any catchment can apply, subject to space.
  • French Immersion, with early immersion starting in kindergarten at a handful of elementary schools and an intensive late immersion program starting in Grade 6 at Chief Dan George Middle School. Students finish at W.J. Mouat Secondary, graduating with a bilingual Dogwood.
  • A January lottery for kindergarten to Grade 5 district programs, including traditional schools and French Immersion, with priority for siblings.

The popularity of traditional schools tells you something about Abbotsford parents: many want structure, homework and clear expectations.

Why Abbotsford families use tutoring

Abbotsford has one of the largest South Asian communities in Canada relative to its size, the great majority Punjabi Sikh, with gurdwaras, businesses and community organizations throughout the city. Many families place a high value on education and on careers in health care, engineering, business and the trades, and they want their children's math and English to be strong from the early grades. There are also established Mennonite, Dutch-Canadian and Korean communities, and newer arrivals from the Philippines, Latin America and elsewhere.

Language is part of the picture. Many children grow up speaking Punjabi or another language at home, and parents want support with academic English reading and writing alongside math. BC's proficiency-scale report cards for kindergarten to Grade 9 leave some families wanting a clearer sense of progress.

Long commutes matter too. Many Abbotsford parents work in Langley, Surrey or Vancouver, and a centre close to home with a fixed weekly schedule gives children routine when parents are on the road.

Where the territories are

The city is divided into two territories:

  • Abbotsford, covering, broadly, the central and southern parts of the city, including Clearbrook, the historic downtown, Mill Lake and the neighbourhoods around the University of the Fraser Valley.
  • Abbotsford North, covering, broadly, the north and east of the city, including neighbourhoods towards Matsqui, McMillan and the newer hillside subdivisions on the slopes of Sumas Mountain, such as Auguston.

Abbotsford's growth is pushing both up and out, with denser housing planned around the city centre and new neighbourhoods on the edges. The widening of Highway 1 through Langley and Abbotsford is improving the connection to Metro Vancouver. Each Success Tutoring territory is exclusive and drawn around households, children aged 5 to 17 and schools.
