Kelowna has changed fast. The Kelowna census metropolitan area grew by about 14% between 2016 and 2021, according to Statistics Canada, making it one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the country, and it now counts more than 220,000 residents around the shores of Okanagan Lake. Families have arrived from the Lower Mainland, Alberta and overseas, drawn by jobs, lifestyle and space. Success Tutoring is launching in Canada and is looking for a partner to open a tutoring franchise in Kelowna. No territory has been drawn in the Okanagan yet; the first would be mapped together with the partner.
One district for the whole Central Okanagan
Public schools across the area are run by School District 23 (Central Okanagan Public Schools), which covers Kelowna, West Kelowna, Lake Country and Peachland and is among the largest districts in BC outside the Lower Mainland. It follows the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care curriculum. Rapid growth has kept the district busy adding classroom space, and some schools in the fastest-growing areas have relied on portables.
Families also have independent and faith-based options, including Aberdeen Hall Preparatory School, Immaculata Regional High School and several Christian schools. French-language schooling is available through the Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique, and SD23 offers French Immersion.
BC's provincial checkpoints apply here as everywhere in the province. Students write the Foundation Skills Assessment in Grades 4 and 7, then graduation literacy and numeracy assessments in high school. Kindergarten to Grade 9 report cards use proficiency levels instead of letter grades, which can leave newly arrived parents, especially those from Alberta or abroad, unsure how their child compares.
Why Okanagan families are looking for tutoring
- Newcomers to BC's system. Families moving from Alberta, Ontario or other countries often notice differences in curriculum pacing and reporting, and they look for a way to fill gaps and keep children confident.
- A growing professional workforce. Kelowna General Hospital and Interior Health, UBC Okanagan, a growing tech sector and aviation employers such as KF Aerospace have drawn skilled workers who place a high value on education.
- University on the doorstep. UBC Okanagan's engineering, nursing and science programs, and Okanagan College's trades and business programs, give local students ambitious options close to home, but entry depends on strong senior marks.
- Seasonal and shift work. Tourism, hospitality, health care and construction schedules make it hard for some parents to help with homework every night, so a structured weekly session is attractive.
Where families are settling
Kelowna's growth is spread around the lake and up its hillsides:
- Glenmore and the north end, including Wilden and the areas near UBC Okanagan and the airport, where hillside subdivisions continue to expand.
- Black Mountain and Rutland, on the east side, with a mix of established, more affordable housing and newer neighbourhoods on the slopes.
- The Mission, including Kettle Valley, Upper Mission and the Lower Mission, popular with established families.
- West Kelowna, across the William R. Bennett Bridge, including Rose Valley, Shannon Lake and Westbank, where many young families have bought homes.
- Lake Country, to the north along Highway 97, a growing commuter community.
Because the bridge and Highway 97 carry most cross-city traffic, families on each side of the lake tend to prefer services close to home. That matters when deciding where a centre and its territory should sit.
Running a Success Tutoring centre in Kelowna
A Kelowna partner would operate a retail-style learning centre where families enrol as members. Success Tutoring may support you with locating and leasing a site, completing the fit-out, recruiting tutors and training them through its online platform, learning resources, and marketing around the opening and after it, with ongoing help from the head office team. The franchise agreement and disclosure documents describe exactly what is provided.
Partners do not need teaching experience. Many people who have moved to the Okanagan bring corporate, health, engineering or small-business backgrounds and want a business rooted in their new community. Students at UBC Okanagan and Okanagan College can be a good source of part-time tutors.
Frequently asked questions
Which franchise rules apply in Kelowna?
British Columbia's Franchises Act applies throughout the province, including the Okanagan. It requires a franchisor to provide a disclosure document at least 14 days before you sign a franchise agreement or pay any money. Seek independent legal advice before you sign.
Should a Kelowna centre be on the east or west side of the lake?
It depends on where you live and which families you want to serve. The east side has the largest population, while West Kelowna is a distinct, growing community connected by a single bridge. A territory would be drawn with you using household, child and school data.
Is Kelowna a good fit for someone relocating from Alberta?
Many Kelowna families have Alberta roots, and a partner who understands both provinces' school systems can relate to parents going through the same move. Success Tutoring is interested in hearing from people who plan to live and work in the Okanagan.
