Barrie wraps around Kempenfelt Bay on Lake Simcoe, about an hour north of Toronto when the 400 is moving. Statistics Canada counted close to 148,000 people in the city at the 2021 Census, and the wider metropolitan area, which takes in Innisfil and Springwater, is larger again. Much of that growth has come from families who sold in the GTA and bought more space up the highway. A tutoring franchise in Barrie would serve parents who often grew up with learning centres in Vaughan, Brampton or Scarborough and expect to find the same support where they now live.

Success Tutoring was founded in Sydney in 2017 and is launching in Canada. There is no Barrie territory on the map yet. Success Tutoring is looking for a franchise partner in the city, and the territory would be drawn with that partner.

Schools in Barrie and Simcoe County

The Simcoe County District School Board runs English public schools across the county, and the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board runs the Catholic system from Barrie up into Muskoka. French-language families can choose Conseil scolaire Viamonde or Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir. Both English boards offer French Immersion at selected schools, and the county has a smaller independent school sector.

Barrie students follow the Ontario curriculum. EQAO assessments in Grades 3, 6 and 9 give parents a published snapshot of how their school performs, and every student must pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test or the alternative literacy course to graduate.

Georgian College's main campus is in Barrie, with programs ranging from health and engineering technology to business and the skilled trades. For degree programs, many local students head to Toronto, Waterloo, Guelph or Ottawa, which means competing for places on Grade 12 marks against students from across the province.

What drives demand in Barrie

The commuter squeeze. Thousands of Barrie residents work in the GTA and drive the 400 or ride the Barrie GO line from Allandale Waterfront or Barrie South. Long commutes leave little energy for homework help. A centre close to home, with sessions at the same time every week, takes one job off the list.

Expectations that moved north with families. Parents who were tutored themselves in the GTA, or whose older children attended a learning centre before the move, tend to look for the same thing in Barrie and find fewer options.

Overcrowded new neighbourhoods. Rapid home building in the south end has outpaced school construction at times, with portables a common sight. Parents in busy classrooms often want individual attention for their child.

A broadening community. Barrie is more diverse than it was a decade ago, with newcomer families arriving both directly and via the GTA.

Where the growth is

The Province of Ontario's growth plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe names Barrie as a growth centre, and the city has the land to back it up:

  • The south end, including Painswick, Innishore, Holly and Ardagh Bluffs, where most of Barrie's family housing has been built over the past two decades.
  • The Salem and Hewitt's lands, annexed from Innisfil in 2010 and now being built out as large new communities along Mapleview Drive and McKay Road.
  • Allandale and the waterfront, where the GO station has encouraged new townhouses and condos.
  • The east and north ends, older neighbourhoods around Georgian College and Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre where young families are buying first homes.
  • Beyond city limits, Alcona in Innisfil, Midhurst in Springwater and Angus near CFB Borden, all of which send families into Barrie for shopping and activities.

Bayfield Street, Mapleview Drive and Essa Road are the main retail corridors families already use.

Owning a Success Tutoring centre in Barrie

A Barrie partner would lease a shopfront, build a team of tutors and grow a base of member families. Success Tutoring may support partners with site selection and leasing, fit-out, tutor recruitment and training, learning resources, and marketing before and after launch, as set out in the franchise agreement and disclosure documents.

No teaching degree is required. Partners in the network have come from finance, engineering, corporate and small-business careers. For a Barrie resident who currently commutes to Toronto, running a local business could also be a way off the highway. Georgian College students are a good starting point for tutor recruitment.

Frequently asked questions

Is Barrie part of the GTA for franchise purposes?

No. Barrie is in Simcoe County, north of York Region. It has its own school boards and its own retail catchments, and it would have its own territory once one is drawn with a partner.

Could one centre serve Innisfil as well as Barrie?

Many Alcona families shop and play sport in south Barrie, so it is a reasonable question to raise. Territories are mapped around households, school-age children and schools, and the boundary would be settled with the partner.

How does French Immersion affect demand in Barrie?

Both Simcoe County English boards offer French Immersion, and many parents of immersion students do not speak French at home. Those families often look for regular support with English reading, writing and math.

What disclosure must I receive before buying a franchise in Barrie?

Under Ontario's Arthur Wishart Act (Franchise Disclosure), 2000, the franchisor must deliver a disclosure document at least 14 days before you sign the agreement or pay money. Seek independent legal advice from a franchise lawyer first.

Barrie sits within our Ontario page, north of Toronto and Vaughan. Next, see the launch support partners may receive or the investment schedule.
