Kingston sits where Lake Ontario narrows into the St. Lawrence River, roughly halfway between Toronto and Montreal on Highway 401. Statistics Canada counted about 132,000 residents in the city at the 2021 Census. It is a place shaped by three big institutions: Queen's University, Canadian Forces Base Kingston and the Kingston Health Sciences Centre. A tutoring franchise in Kingston would serve a city full of professors, physicians, nurses, researchers and military families, many of whom treat education as the family business.
Success Tutoring, founded in Sydney in 2017, is launching in Canada. No territory has been drawn in Kingston yet. Success Tutoring is looking for a franchise partner here, and the territory would be mapped with that partner around local households, children and schools.
Kingston's school landscape
English-language public schools in the city are run by the Limestone District School Board, and the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board runs the Catholic system. Families who want French-language education can choose the Conseil des écoles publiques de l'Est de l'Ontario or the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est, both of which operate schools in Kingston. A handful of independent schools round out the options.
All of them follow the curriculum set by the Ontario Ministry of Education. Elementary students write EQAO assessments in reading, writing and math in Grades 3 and 6, the Grade 9 math course ends with its own EQAO assessment, and secondary students must pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test or the literacy course to earn a diploma.
Post-secondary is everywhere you look. Queen's, the Royal Military College of Canada and St. Lawrence College all have campuses in the city, which gives Kingston one of the highest concentrations of students and academics in the province.
Why tutoring fits Kingston families
Military postings. CFB Kingston brings a steady flow of Canadian Armed Forces families who arrive on posting from other provinces, often in the summer, and sometimes leave again within a few years. Children can move between very different provincial curricula. A regular weekly session helps them find their footing in Ontario's math and literacy expectations, and parents value a routine that travels well when one partner is away on training or deployment.
Highly educated parents with little spare time. Hospital shift work, clinical research and university teaching loads leave many parents short of hours on weeknights. They know what good learning looks like and want it delivered consistently.
A growing newcomer community. International graduate students, medical residents and skilled workers who stay after their studies are adding families to the city's west end and north end. Their children are often learning the Ontario system and, in some cases, English at the same time.
Competitive pathways. Many Kingston teenagers aim for engineering, health sciences or commerce programs at Queen's or elsewhere in Ontario, where admission depends heavily on top Grade 12 marks.
Where families live
Kingston's school-age population is spread across a few distinct parts of the city:
- The west end, including Cataraqui North, Westbrook, Woodhaven and the Bayridge and Henderson areas, where most of the newer subdivisions and big-box retail along Gardiners Road and Taylor-Kidd Boulevard are found.
- Kingston East, across the Cataraqui River, including Barriefield, Greenwood Park and Riverview Shores, close to the base and popular with military and professional families.
- Central Kingston, from Calvin Park and Polson Park to Kingscourt and Portsmouth, older neighbourhoods with established schools.
- Just outside the city, Amherstview and Odessa in Loyalist Township and the villages of South Frontenac, where commuters raise families and drive into Kingston for services.
Highway 401 interchanges at Gardiners Road, Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard and Division Street connect these areas to the main retail corridors families already use.
Running a Success Tutoring centre in Kingston
A Kingston partner would run a retail-style learning centre, recruit and manage a team of tutors, and build a base of member families. Support that may be provided includes help choosing and leasing a site, fit-out, tutor recruitment and training through an online platform, learning resources, and launch and ongoing marketing. What is provided is set out in the franchise agreement and disclosure documents.
You do not need a teaching background. Partners across the network have come from engineering, finance, corporate and small-business careers. In Kingston, retired or transitioning Canadian Armed Forces members may find their leadership experience transfers well, and Queen's, RMC and St. Lawrence College students are a natural pool of tutors.
Frequently asked questions
Does Kingston's student population make tutor recruitment easier?
It helps. Thousands of university and college students live in Kingston during the academic year, and many look for part-time work close to campus. Partners still need to plan for the summer, when some students leave the city.
Can a Kingston centre support military families who move often?
Families on posting can join as members and attend weekly sessions for as long as they are in Kingston. A tutor works from each student's current level, which suits children who have come from another province's school system.
Would a Kingston territory include Amherstview or Kingston East?
Territories have not been drawn in Kingston yet. They are mapped with each partner using census data on households, school-age children and schools, so the communities included will depend on that process.
Which franchise law applies to a Kingston purchase?
Ontario's Arthur Wishart Act (Franchise Disclosure), 2000. A franchisor must hand you a complete disclosure document at least 14 days before you sign anything binding or pay any money. Seek independent legal advice before you commit.
Kingston is part of our Ontario page, and Ottawa is the nearest large city with its own page. To go further, read about what the process involves or the Canadian tutoring franchise guide.
