Brantford sits on the Grand River where Highway 403 bends between Hamilton and Woodstock. The 2021 Census counted a little over 100,000 residents in the city, according to Statistics Canada, with more in the surrounding County of Brant. It is big enough to support a learning centre and small enough that word of mouth travels fast, which is why a tutoring franchise in Brantford deserves a close look from anyone who wants to build a business rooted in one community.

Success Tutoring began in Sydney in 2017 and is launching in Canada. The territories on this page are split into Brantford North and Brantford South.

How Brantford's schools are organized

Two English-language boards cover the city:

  • Grand Erie District School Board, the public board for Brantford, Brant County, Haldimand and Norfolk.
  • Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board, which runs Catholic elementary schools across the city and secondary schools including Assumption College and St. John's College.

French-language public and Catholic boards also serve the area. Brantford is also next to Six Nations of the Grand River, the most populous First Nations community in Canada, and many Six Nations students attend secondary school in Brantford.

Every publicly funded school here teaches the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum. That means province-wide EQAO testing in the elementary years and in Grade 9 math, the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test as a diploma requirement, and senior marks that determine university and college offers. Parents can look up their school's EQAO results online, and many do.

Why Brantford parents seek extra help

Families arriving from the GTA and Hamilton. For years, Brantford has offered more house for the money than the cities to its east. Households have moved in from Hamilton, Halton and beyond, often keeping jobs that involve a drive on the 403. Those commutes leave less time in the evening for homework.

A post-secondary presence downtown. Wilfrid Laurier University's Brantford campus and Conestoga College's Brantford campus have brought students and staff into the core. For parents, they are a reminder that university entry depends on Grade 12 marks; for a tutoring centre, they are a source of potential tutors.

A changing local economy. Brantford grew up as a manufacturing town and still has a strong industrial and logistics base along the 403 and in the city's business parks. Parents who work shifts in those sectors value a dependable after-school routine for their children.

Curriculum change. As elsewhere in Ontario, the 2020 elementary math curriculum and the move to a single de-streamed Grade 9 math course left many parents unsure how to help at home.

Where the growth is

Brantford grew in 2017 when a boundary adjustment with the County of Brant brought new land into the city, and much of the city's planned residential growth sits in those northern and western areas.

  • Brantford North takes in the established neighbourhoods off King George Road and the Wayne Gretzky Parkway, along with newer subdivisions and land set aside for housing in the north end.
  • Brantford South includes West Brant, Shellard Lane and the subdivisions south of the river, an area that has filled with young families over the past two decades, along with Eagle Place, Echo Place and the older neighbourhoods near downtown.

Nearby, Paris in the County of Brant has grown quickly too, and families there regularly shop and play sports in Brantford. Partners interested in the wider area can look at the Hamilton page or the Kitchener-Waterloo page.

What a Brantford partner does

A Success Tutoring partner leases a retail-style centre, usually in a plaza with good parking, hires and leads tutors, and builds a membership base of families who attend regular weekly sessions. Support that may be available covers site selection and leasing, fit-out, tutor recruitment and training, learning resources, ongoing marketing and planning for launch. The details are set out in the franchise agreement and disclosure documents.

You do not need to have been a teacher. Partners have come from corporate, engineering, finance and small-business roles. In a city of Brantford's size, being a visible local owner, at school events, community sports and local business groups, can make a real difference.
