Territory map of Ottawa
Dashed circles mark larger cities and towns where territories have not been mapped yet; their size reflects the estimated number of territories.
Territory data last updated .
Ottawa is a city of more than one million people, according to the 2021 census by Statistics Canada, and one of the most highly educated in the country. Success Tutoring is launching in Canada in 2026, and while its first territories are concentrated in the Greater Toronto Area, the company is now looking for franchise partners to bring a tutoring franchise to Ottawa. No territories have been drawn here yet. They are expected to be drawn with the first partners, around the communities they want to serve.
That makes Ottawa a chance to be early. A partner who starts here would help shape how the brand enters the capital region.
Ottawa's school boards
Ottawa has four large publicly funded boards, and the French-language boards are much bigger here than in most of Ontario:
- Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB), the English public board.
- Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB), the English Catholic board.
- Conseil des écoles publiques de l'Est de l'Ontario (CEPEO), the French public board.
- Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE), the French Catholic board.
Students in all four follow the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum and write the same provincial EQAO assessments as the rest of the province: reading, writing and math in Grades 3 and 6, math in Grade 9, and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) in Grade 10.
French Immersion is a defining feature of Ottawa schooling. In a city where bilingualism helps with federal government careers, a large share of English-speaking families enrol their children in immersion or extended French programs. Ottawa also has a range of private schools, including Ashbury College and Elmwood School.
Across the Ottawa River, Gatineau is in Quebec, with a different curriculum, Quebec's ministerial exams and French-language schooling rules. A centre on the Ontario side would mainly serve Ontario curriculum families.
Why Ottawa families use tutoring
Ottawa's workforce is dominated by the federal public service and a large technology sector centred on Kanata. Many parents hold degrees and expect their children to go to university. They care about math in particular, because programs such as engineering and computer science at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University, and further afield, set high entrance marks.
French Immersion creates its own demand. Children learning math and science in French can fall behind in English reading and writing, and parents who do not speak French often cannot help with homework. A structured English and math program gives these families support they cannot easily provide at home.
Ottawa's growth suburbs also have the classic tutoring profile: young families, two working parents and long commutes into the core.
Where the opportunity is in Ottawa
The most promising areas are the fast-growing suburbs that ring the city:
- Kanata and Stittsville in the west, home to the Kanata North technology park and large family subdivisions.
- Barrhaven and Riverside South in the south, among the fastest-growing communities in the city, with new schools opening to keep up.
- Orléans in the east, a large, bilingual suburb where the O-Train light rail line is being extended east.
- Nepean and the inner suburbs, with established neighbourhoods close to the city's employment centres.
- Findlay Creek and Leitrim, newer communities in the south-east.
Tell us which part of the city you know best, and we can discuss shaping a territory around it using data on homes, children aged 5 to 17 and local schools. No other partner can open inside it.
Support for Ottawa's first partners
Early partners have support from head office through the set-up. That can include scouting and securing a storefront in a suburban plaza, planning the interior, and hiring tutors, who are then trained on the company's online system. Learning resources and a structured program are provided, and help is available with planning local marketing around the launch. What is included is spelled out in the franchise agreement and disclosure documents.
The capital's large pool of public servants and tech professionals is a good fit for the role, which is about running a business and leading a team rather than teaching. With the University of Ottawa, Carleton University and Algonquin College in the city, there is a ready pool of potential tutors.
Frequently asked questions
Why are there no territories on the Ottawa map yet?
Success Tutoring's first Canadian territories were drawn in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, Southwestern Ontario and Metro Vancouver. Ottawa territories are expected to be drawn with partners, so the first partners may have more say in where their territory sits.
Can an Ottawa centre serve French Immersion students?
Yes. Success Tutoring's program is in English and math, which is exactly where many immersion families want extra support. Students in French-language schools may also want English support, though their math is taught in French.
What franchise law applies in Ottawa?
Ottawa is in Ontario, so the Arthur Wishart Act (Franchise Disclosure), 2000 applies: you must receive a disclosure document at least 14 days before signing or paying, with rescission rights if it is missing or deficient. A centre in Gatineau would fall under Quebec law instead. Seek independent legal advice either way.
Could I open more than one centre in Ottawa?
Talk to us about your plans. Because territories here have not been drawn yet, early partners can discuss growth across more than one community.
